    1. Re: [NCWARREN-L] Durham - Fortune
    2. I have searched the Warren County records through 1810 without finding any other mention of a Fortune. I would think that if Mary Fortune was married in Warren County she would have some relatives there. However, I have been unable to find any trace of anyone else named Fortune in the Warren County Records. Can anyone help in tracing the Mary Fortune who married Charles Durham? Where did she come from? Who are her parents? When and where was she born? Who were her siblings? Was she married before? If so, when and where? -- Dan Durham

    3. I am researching my ancestor William White (1780-1842) born in Guilford Co, NC and married in 1798 to Rebecca (Bell?) in WARREN County. I am especially interested in determining if they had a child William Miles White who may have been born in VA around 1825. Any additional information or verification would be greatly appreciated. 1. [NCWARREN-L] John EARLE, in Virginia before 1750
    2. One of my most elusive ancestors is John EARLE, who is found in the records of Brunswick Co, VA in 1755 and later in Lunenburg and Mecklenburg Counties in VA. (These residences might show the evolution of counties rather than migration.) In the 1760s he moved his family to Granville Co, NC, where he died about 1797. His wife, Agnes, is mentioned in Virginia records and in his will. His son and heir, John EARL, married Zebiah SIMS in Warren Co, in 1780. No trace of John EARLE of Virginia has been found prior to the records in Brunswick Co. I have found no immigration record or any mention in colonial records. One would think he was probably among the many Virginia descendants of Sir John EARLE, but I have not been able to find the link. Any help would be much appreciated. Tom Aiken

    3. Helen, Genealogy.com has the 1860 Census online and indexed by state, along with 1900 & 1910 which also aren't indexed at Ancestry. 1860 was the year our Warren County Census takers decided to skip listing first names, and just use initials. However, they did compensate by giving the names of the counties where each person was born, in most cases. Here is what I found: 1860 Warren County,NC, Ridgeway P.O.Roll 916,Book 1, Page 287A, Image 5,#784/784 - (looks like your Jeremiah M.Fleming) J.M. 1. [NCWARREN-L] Re: Dividing Line from Warren County, NC from Granville County, NC
    2. I want to Thank each and every one of you who sent me information on the dividing line of Warren County. I love this list. I don't think many people know that parts of Granville County was later annexed into the already Warren county that was formed from Bute County. My 5x Great-grandfather, Gulielmus Smith, moved to Granville Co., NC from Hanover Co., VA abt 1864-1865. He was commissioner along with others at that time and helped with that dividing line. He is found in court records Feb 1787 Court term, report of Commissioners for dividing line between Warren & Granville Counties. Beginning at Starks Mill On Anderson's Swamp, south to line formerly dividing afsd. counties. Commrs: JOHN MACON, JOHN WILLIAMS DANIEL, PLEASANT HENDERSON & GULIELMUS SMITH and BENJAMIN HAWKINS. Parts of Granville County were annex to Warren County after 2/1787. I would like to get a date that this went into affect. Was it the same year that it was purposed (1787) or maybe a year later? I do know that he is listed on three various Warren Co, Court Records for 1794, and three in 1795, one in 1796, one in 1810, and one in 1813. He is listed on the tax rolls in Warren Co. for 1811, 1812, and 1813. His Will is recorded in Warren Co, NC on May 10, 1814. He leaves a wealthy estate in NC when he dies. He owned three large plantations and 96 slaves when he died in 1814. At this time, this area of Granville was Warren County and then later it became Vance County, NC. Some time between 2/1787 and 1794, it was annexed to Warren County. Anyone have any ideas on this? Helen L. Smith Hoke (I chase dead people....and they are so far ahead of me, I'll never catch up. 1. [NCWARREN-L] Elizabeth Ford JENKINS
    2. According to Nettie Jenkins Bowen's book on the JENKINS family (page 98) the Elizabeth Ford JENKINS who married William CHRISTMAS in Warren County was a daughter of William JENKINS and Elizabeth Ford. In the account I am trying to verify she is listed as the daughter of William's brother Jesse JENKINS and his wife, Martha HOUSE. This apparent inconsistency is complicated by the former source's listing of Jesse's daughter, Betsy, and daughters-in-law Elizabeth CHRISTMAS and Nancy FULLER. "Daughter-in-law", in colonial times, often meant step-daughter. Was Jesse JENKINS or his wife, Martha House, married more than once? Could daughter-in-law also mean married daughter, or niece? Could it perhaps refer to Elizabeth FORD, who married William JENKINS? Jesse JENKINS' sons as identified by Bowen, apparently from Jessse's will, were: Thomas, Jacke (?), Jesse, Joel and William. Their wives are not listed by Bowen, so I cannot define Jesse's daughters-in-law. Can anyone confirm the identity of Elizabeth Ford JENKINS? She was evidently in direct line of descent of the author of the second source cited above. Her identify will help me in determining my descent as well. Does anyone know the parents of Elizabeth FORD, wife of William JENKINS and sister-in-law of Jesse JENKINS? Tom Aiken

    2. Tom: I did a search for you and found: Bute County, North Carolina Minutes of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, 1767-1779 10 February 1778 A Deed from Jesse Jenkins to Howell Moss was acknowledged by the said Jesse and Martha wife of the said Jesse being first privately Examined by William Person Esq'r appointed by the Court for that purpose relinquished her right of dower in the said Lands Conveyed and on Motion the same was Ordered to be Registered. 1. So a Jesse Jenkins in Bute Co in 1778 had a wife named Martha. An Index to Marriage Bonds Filed in the North Carolina State Archives. Raleigh, NC: North Carolina Division of Archives and History, 1977. Bride: Betsey Ford Jinkins Groom: William Christmas Bond Date: 23 May 1790 County: Warren Record #: 01 043 Bondsman: Jessee Jenkins Witness: M Duke Johnson Bond #: 000160225 2. A Betsey (Elizabeth?) Ford Jinkins married a William Christmas in Warren. Appears her father supplied the bond. Warren County North Carolina Marriages to 1825 House Jenkins, Tabitha Thomas Spouse: House, Tabitha to Jenkins, Thomas Marriage Date: 04 Feb 1782 AND THIS IS CURIOUS?!! Thomas Jenkins married Tabitha House in Warren Co in 1782 BUT who is the Tabitha House who marries in 1794? Bute County, North Carolina Minutes of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, 1767-1779 10 February 1778 A Deed from Roger Thornton to William House was proved by the oath of Thomas Jenkins a witness thereto and on Motion the same was Ordered to be registered 4. So Thomas Jenkins was in Bute Co in 1778 and appears to know William House. 1. [NCWARREN-L] Martha HOUSE marriage to Jesse JENKINS before 1770?
    2. Having found some information about the JENKINS family I wish to corroborate it. It includes the subject marriage. According to this source Martha House was a daughter of William HOUSE and Hannah HOLLISTER. Reportedly she was born in Connecticut. Jesse's older brother, Thomas JENKINS, married Tobitha (Tabitha?) HOUSE according to another source. A daughter of Jesse JENKINS and Martha HOUSE, Elizabeth Ford JENKINS, is said to have married William CHRISTMAS 23 May 1790. He was a son of Thomas CHRISTMAS and Sarah DUKE. There were several men named Jesse JENKINS in this family. I am descended from one of them, and I am trying to sort them out correctly. I also want to evaluate the reliability of the source from which this information was obtained. Your help will be much appreciated. Tom Aiken

    1. Re: [NCWARREN-L] Mail list problem?
    2. I think this could be the reason some think the mailing list are effected by the aol 9.0. I think the users are just checking the wrong boxes (see mail and spam controls box below). New Advanced Spam Filters Spam is public enemy #1 at AOL, and AOL 9.0 Optimized gives you brand new state-of -the art Spam Filters in order to keep Spam OUT of your mailbox. To access the new Spam Controls: Click on the Spam Controls link on the mailbox or go to AOL Keyword: spam controls or go to AOL Keyword: mail controls Your first lines of defense are the AOL® Advanced Spam Filters. To use AOL's Advanced Spam Filter: Do nothing Yes, it is that easy. By keeping the check box for the Advanced Spam Filters checked, most spam addressed to you will be placed in your spam folder. Tip: Like a human being, AOL's new Spam filters take time to learn. Make sure to check your spam folder periodically to ensure your spam filters haven't caught any mails incorrectly. However, AOL's spam filters become much more useful for you if you train them. Training the spam filters is easy. To train the spam filters to catch more spam: Click once on any spam mail that does still show up in your mailbox. Click the Report Spam button. The spam message will move into the Spam Folder. Follow these steps for all Spam messages. You can also select multiple spam mails to report at one time. AOL will now look for similar mail and place them in your Spam Folder. Open your Spam Folder by clicking on the Spam Folder link on the mailbox. Use the Delete or Delete All button to permanently delete all spam mail. If AOL has caught any mails that you do not consider spam, highlight the mail and click This is Not Spam. AOL will now look for similar mail and make sure to place them in your inbox.
