My ancestors have a connection with the Harris family in Granville County but I have not figured out just how yet. My ggg-grandfather William Rial MOORE was married in Wake County to Martha WADFORD in 1852. The bondsman was John HARRIS. His brother Lemuel MOORE married Mary WADFORD in 1851 in Wake County also. Simeon HARRIS was his bondsman. Lemuel and William Rial both lived in Granville County from 1850-1860. Lemuel was killed in the Civil War in 1864. Rial lived in Franklin County in 1880 and was still there in 1891. Not sure what happened to him after that. Thanks. Norma, Could you tell me how I might get a copy of this book you mentioned? Thanks
There is a book by Shirley Jones Mallard called "Our Partenia" about the daughter of Samuel Duty and Frances O'Kelly Harris. It is a very interesting book. Deed Book IJ, page 167 says that John Harris' wife was named Rachael. Some think her last name was Kittrell, but I have no documents on this. Mary Elizabeth Watts was married to John Earl. There is an interesting story about her if anyone is interested. John Harris's father is Richard Harris. This is in Deed Book H page 266, Granville County. Hope this will help someone. Also to the person who was interested, I looked at the Ancestral File at the Family History Center and found a Robert Harris, born 1817 in Warren County. He was married to Elizabeth Duke also of Warren County. If tthis is the right one, I will be happy to look further. Norma Grice
I checked Anderson Harris's family. I should have looked before I sent the last email. I didn't catch the date you sent which was 1868 and the Anderson ( b. 1818)I was talking of who was the father of Elizabeth Frances ARRIS( b. 1846). Where was the Anderson s/o Sherwood from? Thanks for sending that information . Every little piece helps. I really appreciate the information about Sherwood Harris . If you know any thing else about that family or back , I would appreciate it. While John Bennett Boddie's work is well worth reviewing, it is my understanding numerous errors have subsequently been documented (I hesitate to call these "errors," since more likely it is just the "evolving" nature of genealogical research, with additional data having come to light.) Nevertheless, great caution should be used when consulting Boddie. And....there was more than one West Harris....and it is unclear as to whether there was a relationship. These Harrises appear to have migrated to the Montgomery/Rowan Co area...and I *think* there is some sort of monument (grave) there. I see the name HARRIS floating around on messages and wonder if any one has any info on my husband's grgrandparents: Ella T HARRIS, b 1857 in NC and George Wyatt Floyd who are supposed to have lived after 1860 and died in Warren Co. in 1883 of typhoid. Any suggestions, please?!? Thanks, Linda Floyd [email protected]
Hi Norma, Saw your post about finding Joseph Baskett's grave site and wonder if you are researching the Baskett family of Warren Co. I am researching James Baskett and would like to exchange info with you if indeed you are working on the same family. Linda
Sandy, my husband and I are racking our brains (tough this time of yr!) and agree that descendants moved the old gravestone of West Harris to Salisbury because of reservoir. Don't recall a DAR marker but one could have been erected in the last 3-4 years. The stone itself is VERY old. Bebe

I have seen the old grave marker of West Harris in cemetery in Salisbury, Rowan Co. It has been a while but think he was outstanding in Rev. War and family had lived in Granville Co. prior to Montgomery Co. In latter county they lived near a river (the Deep??) which was dammed in this century for water supply thus graves were moved. West is in cem. in downtown Salisbury, the oldest grave... birth and death dates there. I have a Green Harris in Orange Co. who was right age to have been Green, son of West, but nobody seems to know anything about Green Harris, son of West. I made copius notes regarding the Harris family years ago and it seemed to me that one or more of the sons of West of Montgomery returned to Granville Co. I finally got so confused I just tossed the whole homemade chart. Ida Brooks Kellam in her Brooks and Kindred Families (mainly Chatham Co., NC) says Benj. Harris of Southampton Co., Va. had son Benj. Jr who removed to Chatham. Benj. of Southampton did have son Benj. Jr. Sr. named his g' son , West, son of Benj., Jr. This family turns up in Chatham toward the end of the yr. that Sr. d. in Southampton so seems reasonable connection to me. Is this in dispute? I am open. Mrs. Kellam goes on to connect Harris through Perquimans Co., NC, although I have not checked out her references.
Thanks for the address. Bebe
There is a book written by John Brayton called "The Five Thomas Harrises of Isle of Wight County, Virginia" that is well documented and corrects the Boddie article. It is about 180 pages. It costs me $20 including shipping two years ago. I bought it from Genealogical Services, 1503 Union Ave., Suite 220, Memphis, Tenn 38104. I even got an autographed copy from the author. Forrest King
One of John Bennett Boddies books has much on the Harris family. Seems the given name of West ties them all together. Bebe

Couldn't find an Atwater in "Sketches," and there are no Atwaters listed in the Vance Co. Heritage book. Nor do I see any Pendergrass listed in the Vance Co Heritage Book. But, of course, bear in mind, it's the VANCE Co Heritage Book, and only *part* of Granville became Vance. Just because the name isn't in the Vance Heritage Book certainly doesn't mean there weren't any of those families around. ;-) There are, of course, Pendergrasses in Orange County....even to present day. Not sure if Lindy Pendergrass is still sheriff, but he was as recently as 10 years ago (altho I don't recall if his family is "native" to Orange). Also checked "Sam's Black Baby," and don't find any reference to Atwater or Pendergrass in there. Sorry I'm not of much help here, but perhaps someone else can add information for you. -Sandy

Hi Claud Andrew Turner was born in 1823. There was John born about 1775, John born 1800, and then AT born 1823. I was hoping to establish a link with the elder John to a child of Edward Harris and Mary Turner. thank you William PS Martha, James, Ann, and West are names of AT's siblings. Just curious. :)
William, on page 12 Edward HARRIS married Mary TURNER the daughter of John and Mary Tomlin TURNER. Their children were" Daniel Edward Jacob Martha Ann Nathan West James There is no mention of an Andrew Turner HARRIS No help in clearing up that problem. Claud
Hi Claud Thanks for the look. I don't see any familiar names. I do have another question. The younger John had a son named Andrew Turner. Would you know if they are descendants of ??? Harris and Mary? Turner, I've heard so much about. Does the book clear up this matter. thank you William
