Hello, List: I just recently joined this list because someone was kind enough to share some Warren Co., NC marriage records with the Robertson mailing list, and I found some of my family names shown, though I do not know for sure if they are "my" guys. I only know that they came from NC for sure, but not sure about the county. Regardless, I thought I'd throw out my Robertson line, in case anyone recognizes the names, or perhaps has done some research that could give me any clues about this family! The ROBERTSON marriages from Warren Co., NC have a William ROBERTSON m. Nancy White 11/28/1808 (according to the post), which could easily be "my" William Pitt Robertson (Sr.). Also interesting is that there is a marriage between Isham Robertson and Patty Peebles 12/09/1779 - and the youngest son of William Pitt Robertson, (Jr.) is Isham Pitt Robertson, not a name that I would consider common. Can anyone give me the 1920 Soundex of John Heath Edwards in Dallas, Texas. Would appreciate your help. wrakj1234
I have read that an Ordinary was a tavern/inn, often in the home of the owner. Many travelers stopped, from necessity, at homes of people they did not know asking to spend the night and for some food, so homeowners, tired of that, decided to charge. The guests ate what the family "ordinarily" ate. Thus the name "Ordinary". Hey to all, Just another shot in the dark. It is said that my 4th gggggrandfather was b. in Franklin Co., NC. The only proof is alisting in this Estate record of Edgecomb Co. that he was even from NC. Family says Franklin. Below is the record. (First and only record we have found in NC of a Matthew GAY) Estate Records of Edgecombe Co., NC. 1730-1820, The will of Mary Gay, inventoried 30 March 1795, May Court 1795, shows that additional inventory was taken by Hezekiah Langley, Admr. August Court 1795. A ccount of the sale by the admr., June 16, 1795. Benjamin Gay, Richard Gay, Henry Gay and Matthew Gay were buyers, August Court 1795. Account current with theadmr., May 1795. Division of money arrising from the estate equally among the legal representatives, namely, James Gay, Simon Gay, Sarah Langley and Elizabeth Langley, August 1796. (stated below is his death date: 8/27/1843 and it states he was 60 at death. If so he would have been b. 1783. How could he have been a buyer in at estate at the age of 12 years old above in 1795??? I feel he is related to these GAYS mentioned here, but have never found any proof. Family states he came to GA with Zorababel Gay in early 1800 and that Zoro was his father. I need his parents and any siblings... Died in State Prison, Milledgeville, GA Recorded in "Georgia Black Book" #825 Matthew Gay; Voluntary manslaughter; 3yrs; 10/30/1840-10/30/43; Emanuel Co.; Farmer; NC; 1; 60 yrs; 6' 1 3/4"; Fair; Grey; Blue; D. 8/27/1843. The story of Matthew's incarceration has been passed down in the family. According to John Harry Gay, Jr., Matthew's greatgreatgreatgrandson, he went to prison for one of his sons who had killed a man. Apparently this was a practice that was allowed then. We do not know who the son was or the name of the man he killed at present. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks, Nancy -- Nancy Gay Crawford 108 Forest Rd. Thank you very much for the information on the SIMMONS families. If available, I would appreciate the names of the eight children of John Simmons and Susannah Gupton, as they are of my line. My apologies for making this a list answer but there might be others that want to know. Also, there are items I forgot to mention about other resources that are available. I have not seen anyone that just has a first name nor any specific references to being African-American in the book so I suspect the answer to your question is no, unfortunately. There seems to be a trend in the abstracts toward most all of Wake County, a good chunk from neighboring counties, and notables from distant counties. Warren County is well represented. (The latest North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal has details about how to order the Raleigh newspaper abstracts in the back of the publication in the advertising section.) One other thing I did remember that might be of some help in research on the topic of marriages. It is a very poor substitute for what Betty and Eddie have done. It is difficult to pick up name variants on a CD that you can spot with the eye and the CD sorts by male name only. A human touch makes a huge difference. Anyway, Family Tree Maker sells a CD "Family Archive CD 4, Marriage Index: Selected Counties of MD, NC, VA, 1624-1915". It is either $29 or $39. Warren County marriages are covered through 1867. The book that is so kindly and thoughtfully being used for look ups in can be purchased from Iberian Publishing Company for $17.50. They can be reached at 1-800-394-8634 or their web site is http://www.iberian.com/. The Warren County information is no different from the CD. Forrest King

I may be reading this wrong but do you have any marriages and death notices in either North Carolina with Riddle and Hawkins? There may be two names and the first or earliest marriage would be Jemimah Hawkins and Randolph Riddle. (I have no dates but in the 1700's I believe on the first one and on the second one would be the same last name but the first names are Benjamin Riddle and Frances Hawkins. That would probably be in the 1800's and in North Carolina. Probably Franklin Franklin County or perhaps in the late 1700's. Would appreciate any information you can give. Benjamin and Francis were probably married in North Carolina then moved to Tn. and Benjamin died in or around 1820's in Tn. Thanks in advance. wrakj
