    2. Hi Nola, Will you be showing Surname, Given name, Pg# or just Surname, Pg #? >Most of the indices I have found have glaring errors. >No doubt I will make many of the same mistakes on Warren Co. because I >also can not tell what was intended by the writer. One that is >bothering me now is variations between Rudd (which some had >transcribed as Ruddae and one that may or may not be Rudd because it >looks more like Rudal but even then I can not tell what was intended. Suggestion - why not show what you see and what you think it should be in brackets and then do a cross reference. e.g..: Amerry (O'Mary), given name. Pg # O'Mary (Amerry), given name. Pg # Rudal (Rudd, Ruddae), given name. Pg # Rudd (Rudae, Ruddal), given name. Pg # Ruddae (Rudal, Rudd), given name. Pg # Don't forget that the "backwards f" followed by an s is actually ss. Good Luck, and here's to not too many complaints..... Happy hunting, Donna Once I get the list up, I promise that I will try to at least make the index correct once people on the list get a chance to look at it and help me with the intent of the census taker. I have had these images forever and have avoided posting them because I almost dred what I will have to do to correct the mistakes but I do think the list has the collective talent to make up for what I lack. At the moment I have everything done except sticking each image on a page. I have a "working index" to start with so hope all will help get this one as correct as possible. They should be online by tomorrow evening. Nola

    3. I have found incorrect spellings not only in the census records but marriage and estate records too. A case in point, my ancestor Lemuel Moore married Lucretia Rudd. Her name is Lucretia Reid on the marriage records of Granville County NC. Her father was Jeremiah Bailey. There are several entries for the estate records of her father Jeremiah and sometimes her name is spelled Lucretia Rudd, sometimes Lucretia Reid. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, March 26, 2000 5:14 PM Subject: Re: [NCWARREN-L] Census > Nola could the Rudd/Ruddal/be Riddell or Riddle or Ridal? 3. Claude, You are absolutely correct. Most of the indices I have found have glaring errors. It is not that the original spelling is right or wrong - it is just not transcribed correctly. No doubt I will make many of the same mistakes on Warren Co. because I also can not tell what was intended by the writer. One that is bothering me now is variations between Rudd (which some had transcribed as Ruddae and one that may or may not be Rudd because it looks more like Rudal but even then I can not tell what was intended. Once I get the list up, I promise that I will try to at least make the index correct once people on the list get a chance to look at it and help me with the intent of the census taker. Where do you draw the line at what you will change? If this is going to be an accurate index, shouldn't you leave the name as is? Ann -- Ann Avery Hunter Richmond, Virginia mailto:[email protected]

    3. There is an index to the 1850 Warren Co. census, done by S-K Publications, already online at: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/warren/census/1850/warren50.txt They have the name in question as "Amerry". I've looked at the census images at GenealogyLibrary, and that's just what it looks like to me too. nduffy wrote: > > I have decided to post the 1850 census of Warren Co. but am having trouble with some of the names. 3. Nola if you look at the index of the books I have put out you will see some of those names. I have Mary "Lib" Taylor doing all my SURNAME corrections for me and she lives in Warren Co. and has all her life. I have found that she has one of the largest libraries on books publisher about Warren Co. and she always cross references the names she is unfamiliar with.
