Often this happened because the old man was getting a pension - especially the Confederate pensions - which the widow would continue to get after his death. As for children being responsible - it was routine for parents in the nineteenth century to sign up 12 year old boys as cabin boys for sailing vessels going around the world. Nowadays we would hardly leave them at the mall for a couple of hours. Carol Dawn Richardson wrote: > > Amen. > > My great grandmother was the same way. Amen. My great grandmother was the same way. It was a prearranged marriage and she was only 12 yrs. old. to and old gentleman I assume because their are no children. He passed and left her his estate & money. When she was 33 she remarried. It's amazing that a 12 yr old could operate a household with responsibility. My 15 yr old can't remember to take out the trash. If I may jump in here for a sec and say that both of you could be correct. I experienced a similar Surname mystery ... and when solved here is what had happened. The woman in question had married very early in life (like at 14yo) and her husband died soon thereafter. Thus she carried her husbands last name as her own for most of her teen years. When she remarried later on in her twenties, everyone thought her first husband's surname was her maiden name; which of course was not the case. Could this have happened in your case? Alexs
To Dawn and Norma: My source of the statement quoted (that Archiblad M Brown married Tabitha Beckham in 1778) is the book by Becky Dozier, Town Leaders, Littleton, North Carolina, 1790-1920, page 37: "Stephen left six children at his death: Stephen Beckham Jr.; Elsie Beckham, who married John Watson; William Beckham, who married Ann; Jesse Beckham; Tabitha Beckham, who married 4 August 1778, Bute County, N. C., to Archibald Mitchell Brown; and Susanna." This is confirmed by a Bute Co marriage bond of that date for Tabitha Beckham and Mitchell Brown. The name of Stephen Beckham's wife who was the mother of these children is unknown. Tom ([email protected])
Hello, Those of you researching the Brown lineage...would any of you be in possession or have knowledge of the Brown farm records? My query is a sensitive one. I am looking for the slave owners of one of my ancestors, Washington Brown. Per his daughter's marriage certificate in 1868, he is identified by name however next to his name in brackets is 'deceased'. This is the only information I have on him. Perhaps one of you has some helpful information. I would appreciate any information. Celeste
Seth Warner says in his book that William Brown married Mary Smith, called Polly under bond dated 30 June 1800.Their daughter Lucy married George Tunstall 30 March 1820. He said that Lucy was evidently the only child of William and Polly to leave descendants, for William's only heirs were his seven grandchildren all children of Lucy and George. He did not name the children. Lucy died in 1850. Mary Smith was a relative of Orrin Randolph Smith who designed the Stars and Bars that flew over the capital in Montgomery, Alabama I had been told that Tabitha was a Twisdale also, but have never been able to prove it. So maybe it is Beckham. Would like to know for sure. If this William and Polly are yours, I will see what I can find at the Family History Center. Let me know if I can help more. Norma

Norma, Tom stated Tabithas last name below: Was Archibald Brown Jr a son of Archibald M Brown and Tabitha Beckham? If so, do you have all you need on her family? I replied questioning this because I'd found info that her last name was TWISDALE. I really don't know. About that William who married Martha Smith - when did the marriage take place and do you know who the children were? To the list owner....This is the way the queries come in on the other lists I am on.... ===================================================================== Posted on: Wilson Co. Tn Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tn/Wilson?read=402 Surname: carloss, chamberlin ------------------------- After only six months, years of research and searching for answers to the puzzle of Dr. John Carloss Chamberlin the search has now ended. His name was Dr. James Carloss Chamberlin, he was born and raised in Wilson Co., Tn in Lebanon. He graduated from Vanderbilt University and went on to practice medicine in New York state. He married and had two children. In 1931 he was killed in a plane crash in New York. Thanks to the computer I located a relative that had found the granddaughter of Dr. Chamberlin. We have been in touch and now my search has ended. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
I have been looking for Tabitha's last name for years. Do you have her parents name? I would love to hear from you. I have the list of Archibalds children, but I don't have one named Jr. Was there a Jr? I have a William who married Martha Smith. Is this correct? Thanks Norma
