I just got this and wanted to pass along to those on the Warren Co. mailing list: Beginning Monday, 10 June 2002, RootsWeb will begin the complex and time-consuming process of upgrading our servers to new hardware. o What does this mean for you? Well, it means some servers will be unavailable during this time unavailable and we are asking for your patience. For up-to-date information about the different resources, you can visit http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ as the move progresses. o List Administrators: When the time comes to move list servers, we will be halting operation on the machine to complete the move. We expect to have the machines down the least amount of time possible. No mail will be sent from or posted to your mailing lists. We do not expect to lose any messages. o Board Administrators: Nothing, unless your board happens to be gatewayed to a mailing list then the information for list administrators apply. o Web Pages: FTP will be down so that changes can't be made to pages until everything is working correctly on the new servers. There will be a short time that the pages will not be available as the transfer takes place. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we go through a few "growing pains." -- Vicki Lindsay Thauvin RootsWeb Staff vicki@rootsweb.com
The Marriage Bonds microfilm arrived today. Ginger L. Christmas-Beattie http://www.ancestraltracks.com
I wanted to let everyone know that Ginger Christmas-Beattie has submitted indices for the first three volumes of Warren Co. Deed Records. I just started the indexing so that you can find the names using the search engine. Should be ready in about 5 minutes. Here is the link for the Warren Co. GenWeb page. I will shortly upload an index that Ginger has prepared for the "lost deeds" that Ginger has abstracted from the Court Minutes. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncwarren/ Nola nduffy@patch.net http://www.patch.net

Can someone tell me the hours that the Warrenton Public Library is open? Also would love to know the hours at the courthouse! Thank you, Judy
That list was sent to me and it seems to be pretty good except a few flaws. http://www.cpsr.org/cpsr/privacy/ssn/ssn.structure.html This is the link to the SSN list and how they figure out a number or where the person applied for Social Security is. It is where a person applied for the number not where they were born that the number referrs to. I will be taking a research trip to Warren County, NC in June and I was wondering if others who have gone before could help me out with any information? What are the hours at the courthouse and are the books available to use? Are they helpful, copy machines and etc? Same about the public library and is there any other place to look for information? What types of records are there? My relatives were the BENNETT'S who were in Bute/Granville/Warren Counties back in the mid to late 1700's Thanks for any and all information that any of you have. Have never been to NC before! Anything we should see while we are in the area? Judy Shaw Plano, Texas
In the 1880 and 1910 Census, Brassfield Township or Precinct Is in Granville County. Does anyone know where it is in the 1900 census. Thanks for your help. I tried the surrounding Counties but have not been able to locate it yet.
While browsing in the catalog of PLCMC (Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County) a few days ago, I found an entry for "History of Mordecai Female Academy, Warrenton, North Carolina, 1809-1818" by Penny Leigh Richards, published 1996. I've never seen this volume, and wondered if others on the Warren County list knew anything about it. Jim
I am researching the family of Charles J. Edmonds (Edmunds), born 30 Jan 1869 in VA. He married Maria Eugenia Howerton (born 15 Sep 1872 in Dinwiddie Co., VA) in Petersburg, VA on 18 May 1892. They moved to Warren County shortly after the turn of the 20th century. Their children included Herbert Edwin Edmonds, my husband's father. Thanks for all the time researching and sharing., Roberta (and Roy) Edmonds
I know we all have our "brick walls" that seem to have no solution but I just had to share the fact that brick walls also crumble. For 30 years I have tried to trace a Baker Pegram born in Warren Co. in 1815 who went to Tn. before 1850. Many of you who have visited my webpage know that I have tied together over 25,000 descendants of our common Pegram ancester but Baker, who is close to my own line, remained elusive. He appeared on the 1850 Census in Tn. after which he and all his children vanished. For 30 years I have tried to find some trace of what happed to them without any luck. I finally had to accept they had all died in an early epedemic. Today, by pure accident, I found him in Arkansas. For some reason, he had never been indexed under any of the variant spellings. I was looking for someone else entirely when Baker suddenly appeared on my screen. Just wanted to encourage all to keep looking... Nola nduffy@patch.net http://www.patch.net
I use Netscape and most of the viruses will not evoke themselves in Netscape. I did receive the Kleze but it could not work in my system. Most of the viruses are written for Windows products. What arrived was a little note that said "how do you like this poweful tool" and in hidden language in the note was tons of machine language. I copied the note to a floppy disk and the e-mailer's address. I t seems that it came from a Radio station in Austin Texas. There were no files attached and there was no way to know that it wasn't a good e-mail. They are writing these things in such a way that the average reader would never know that they were opening one. Once you click on this note it runs wild in your system. It slipped right through NORTON and if I had been using Outlook Express my computer would have been toast. A couple of days ago, Ginger was kind enough to provide us with a listing of states assigned to Social Security numbers (Thanks, Ginger); however, it is obvious that the list is incomplete since additional numbers have been assigned to various states that were not included in Ginger's listing. An up-to-date listing is available at the Social Security Administration's website (see www.ssa.gov/foia/stateweb.html) which includes number groupings which have been allocated but are not being issued yet. Thus, in addition to 232 and 237-246, North Carolina will be using 681-690, and in additon to 223-231, Virginia will be using 691-699. Note that the scheme of assigning numbers changed at some point in the past. Originally the geographic number was correlated with the location of the office where one applied for a number, but now it is assigned by the zip code to which the social security card is mailed. See the Social Security website for more information. Jim
After receiving this question I thought that some of the list members may not know that I transcribe the old documents of Warren County, NC. I have began collecting microfilm on the records of Warren Co and will be adding to the list of books. I have several rolls of Deed Books as well as Indexes to the Wills 1763-1964 and the Cross Index to Real Estate 1764-1918. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hey Ginger, I'm new to this site and was wondering what books were being ordered, what the books contained and what is the cost. Thanks in advance for your help, Gail Gordon ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Please visit the web page and look at the books and indexes. I have the entire indexes to the books on my web site so that people don't purchase a book that does not have their ancestors in it. http://www.ancestraltracks.com The books on the Court Records contain the Minutes to the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions from 1780 to 1813 in 7 volumes. These records will show members of the Grand Jury, Justices of the Peace, Magistrates, Deeds, Wills, Guardianship records and many other things like who applied for Tavern licenses and are very helpful to the researcher in Warren County, NC. I did a survey of 100 people in the volume 5 to see where I might find the people in other sources and only 25 of the 100 were located in other commonly known records of the area and time period. I am seeking information on my Clark-Perdue connections in Warren Co. I have William Clark married to Elizabeth Perdue in 1849. Does anyone have information going further back for them.....parents/birthdates etc. Thanks...Joyce Johnson
I am looking for any information about George W. King, born about 1828, who married Emeline ?. He appeared in Brunswick County, VA, in the mid 1850s. He seems to be associated with Alexander King, born about 1826, of Mecklenburg County, VA, in 1850 and Brunswick County, VA, in 1860. Alexander was killed in the Civil War and his parents were reported to be Frederick and P. King. Both George W. and Alexander lived near one another in Brunswick County, VA, and had sons named Frederick leading me to believe they were brothers. Possibly they are related to the Kings of Warren County. A young Frederick King was found there about 1850. Can anyone help me with this King family? Additionally, an Emeline King married a Charles Rogers in Halifax County, NC, in 1857. Does anyone know anything about her? Thanks! Hobson
Ad this to your list: Florida also has 589 as the first three numbers. My children received their SS Cards in 1985 and they have those numbers. Gail
The Social Security number can provide valuable information. The first three digits represent the state where the individual first applied. Often this was where he or she was born. At least it is a place to begin a search for other records. Recent death certificates contain this number. Here is table of the codes and their respective states: 001-003 New Hampshire 440-448 Oklahoma 004-007 Maine 449-467 Texas 008-009 Vermont 468-477 Minnesota 010-034 Massachusetts 478-485 Iowa 035-039 Rhode Island 486-500 Missouri 040-049 Connecticut 501-502 North Dakota 050-134 New York 503-504 South Dakota 135-158 New Jersey 505-508 Nebraska 159-211 Pennsylvania 509-515 Kansas 212-220 Maryland 516-517 Montana 221-222 Delaware 518-519 Idaho 223-231 Virginia 520 Wyoming 232 West Virginia & North Carolina 521-524 Colorado 233-236 West Virginia 525 New Mexico 237-246 North Carolina 526-527 Arizona 247-251 South Carolina 528-529 Utah 252-260 Georgia 530 Nevada 261-267 Florida 531-539 Washington 268-302 Ohio 540-544 Oregon 303-317 Indiana 545-573 California 318-361 Illinois 574 Alaska 362-386 Michigan 575-576 Hawaii 387-399 Wisconsin 577-579 District of Columbia 400-407 Kentucky 580 Virgin Islands & Puerto Rico 408-415 Tennessee 581-584 Puerto Rico 416-424 Alabama 585 New Mexico 425-428 Mississippi 586 Guam, Philippines & America Samoa 429-432 Arkansas 587 Mississippi 433-439 Louisiana 700-728 Railroad Retirement Board (all States) (You may have to copy this into a spreadsheet, and clean it up a bit if you want to print it.
