Judy, It most likely means that he had dementia. There were no Rest Homes back then, so when an old person lost their memory, they were placed in the State Hospital, for the insane, etc. My ggrandfather died there, too, in AR. My Mom said that he would go for walks and couldn't find his way home. The family couldn't take care of him, so he was placed in the State Hospital.
