There are records at the web site listed below. I have a (3rd) great uncle who was committed to Dix Hospital not long after it opened in 1856. Both of his parents had died before 1860, and his five brothers were moving to AL. One of his brothers had him committed in 1858. He does show up on the 1850 Wake Co Census as a "lunatic." I didn't find him on the 1860 census, but in 1870 he is listed as an inmate at the NC Insane Asylum. I don't if he was buried in the Dix Cemetery or the family cemetery.
