Some records of Dix Hospital (through about 1930 if I remember correctly) are available at the Archives. However, by state law, many records are permanently closed to the public. This would include the medical records files of patients. There are several categories of exceptions, one of which is for study by psychological professionals. Death certificates for patients at the hospital are available through normal sources. I was looking for the reason that a certain woman was a patient; I found it on her death certificate where she was listed as mentally retarded. Other states have different state laws regarding this information and (the federal) HIPAA may come into play too (I have not researched this.)
