Hi, A "white poll" is a count of the white male citizens over the age of 16 or 18 or 21 (depending on the time and the state taken) I believe that is was 18 in N.C. at that time period but, don't quote me, I would have to check on it. So, if you have 2 white polls you have two men of legal age in that household. If you track back on the tax lists you can get a good idea of when the men in you ancestors' family came of age. If you compare the tax lists to the census lists of pre-1850 (where all you have are age groups, you can narrow birth years down some. Hope this helps. sUE [email protected] wrote: > > Wake and surrounding counties: CLEMENTS, CLEMONS, CLEMMONS, SHIPP, DANIEL, > MANGUM > > Question re: the 1830 and 1840 Tax Lists--what is the "number of white > polls"? > > JJohnson > Kingwood TX > > ==== NCWAKE Mailing List ====
