Hmmm..... o.k. my 2 c worth on this. I wonder if these are the owners copies of these deeds or if they are originals pilfered from the archives? I know there was a man who was arrested and charged for selling documents that he somehow obtained, illegally that were originals. There used to be a newspaper article about him on the board in the search room. I know that the person says they are from an estate sale and that he obtained them by purchasing them. At any rate, I would hope that whoever buys these items, especially the deeds, would check with the archives to see if they have a copy and if not place the document with them and make a copy for themselves if they need to.? The Archives does not keep original copies of individual deeds (unless such were in the estate files, which would be extremely unusual). The Archives has microfilm copies of deeds that were copied from the original documents into the deedbooks at the time of recordation; the owner of the property would have kept the original document. (which is why the signatures in the deedbooks are not of the original grantor but some clerk's transcribed copy of the grantor's signature). The Archives DOES have the original early deedbooks for Wake Co. (which is unusual); they were sent over there by the current Register of Deeds in Wake Co. who is a former Archives employee, probaby due to space issues. Almost all counties keep their original deedbooks in the counties, even though there are microfilm copies at the Archives.
