I understand that this is an ongoing project and that they are continuing to survey and add to this database on a regular basis, so you should check back every few weeks, or months, to see what's new there. Some of these cemeteries have hundreds of burials, and remember that not all of them have headstones, I've noticed that these wonderful people have even gone to the trouble of going through the county records to find out as much info as they can about the ones that don't have headstones. I came across one cemetery in Durham, Grove Hill Cemetery, an African American Cemetery from 1933-1943 that had 349 burials in it, yet the land was sold several times since then ending up as a business complex in the 1970's, and in 1993, as a children's prep school, but not one of those graves had been removed, most of them had apparently been covered over by previous owners except one lonely headstone. Here is the link to the story; follow the paper trail on the "click here" link on the page: http://cemeterycensus.com/nc/durh/cem262.htm I can't tell you how appalled I was by this, but the story came to light only through the tireless work of these people surveying the cemeteries on their own time. By the way, earilier I posted that I though there were 3 counties in this project, but here is a complete list of the counties: Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Durham, Granville, Orange, Person, Surry, Vance, Wake. You can do a Name search on this database, too, from any page with the Search box. Type in the Last name, First name, enclosed in "parentheses " as instructed in the search box. Results come up for the Cemeteries included in this database, which I believe are Wake, Durham and Orange Co. Be reminded that this a volunteer project and not all cemeteries have been surveyed and listed. Most of the ones that have are the results of tireless individuals that have contributed there time and effort to this project. ----- Original Message ----- From: "JOHN AND JUNE CLARK" <jcandjc2@verizon.net> To: <ncwake@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 24, 2007 11:02 AM Subject: Re: [NCWAKE] Wake County Cemetery Listings > Does anyone know if the big cemetery in Raleigh has > been surveyed and indexed, the name of which I can't > remember at the moment, Woodlawn ...Montlawn or > something like that, not Oaklawn. John, Matha's buried in Wakefield Cemetery. That inventory is here: http://cemeterycensus.com/nc/wake/cem205.htm I'm pretty sure Martha's grave is next to Dennis', but they've got these listed alphabetically and for some reason Martha is under the Hoyles (#112) rather than under the Clarks. Also in that same cemetery are Henry Ransom Hoyle & his wife Martha Hayes & some of their children. -Sandy On Feb 24, 2007, at 10:02 AM, JOHN AND JUNE CLARK wrote: > Does anyone know if the big cemetery in Raleigh has > been surveyed and indexed, the name of which I can't > remember at the moment, Woodlawn ...Montlawn or > something like that, not Oaklawn. Does anyone know if the big cemetery in Raleigh has been surveyed and indexed, the name of which I can't remember at the moment, Woodlawn ...Montlawn or something like that, not Oaklawn. I am looking for two burials: George Badger Clark and Worth S. Williams, both of which are supposedly buried there. Also, the indexing of the listed counties appear to be incomplete. I know my Gr. Mother Martha Hoyle Clark is buried in the Zebulon City Cemetery but I could not find her listing. John Clark --- Joanne Gaudio <jgaudio@charter.net> wrote:

Jan, I didn't see your James Howard in the Raleigh City Cemetery in the Cemetery Survey, so I googled Raleigh National cemetery and found a transcript at this address http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov/j2ee/servlet/NGL_v1 5. The Raleigh National Cemetery is #059 in Wake Co., on the North Carolina cemetery website - http://cemeterycensus.com. You don't say which city you're looking at, but I've seen the Zebulon Town Cemetery referred to as the City Cemetery, and there's an older part of it. If you have no luck still, try the last name in the alphabetical listings part of the cemetery site - that's very helpful. Joanne Gaudio
On the daeth certificate of my Great Uncle James Henry Howard it says that he is buried in the City Cemetery. His wife, Sinia Barret Howard's death certificate says that she is buried at City Cemetery Annex. James Ernest Howard's (their son) death certificate says that he is buried at the Raleigh National Cemetery. I could not find any of these in the listings. Did I not look at this right? Is there another name for the city cemetery? Thanks, Jan
I don't know if any of you are aware of this or not, but I thought I'd call everyone's attention to some wonderful fairly new content that has been added to the US GENWEB site for their Cemetery Listings for Wake County. Hundreds of new names have been added for dozens of new cemeteries in Wake County, including full addresses and locations, as well as a clickable Google map to find the cemetery for yourself should one wish to travel there; I just looked through the names and almost couldn't pull myself from the pages since I found so many familiar names. I wish to thank those contributors who tirelessly worked to put that database together, there is so much there, it obviously took a lot of time to put it all together. The link is: http://cemeterycensus.com/nc/wake/ This is a very worthwhile database to look through, so anyone still looking for those missing ancestors in Wake County, take a look here. Thanks, Sharon, although your comments are depressing - and no doubt accurate! I'm resigned to not finding confirmation of what I want since the heirs who were left in NC were also women. Sure makes me glad I live in the good "new" days! Joanne Gaudio

I'm not sure that the info would have been there at some time. Back then women didn't own much of anything, therefore when they were left a life estate there was no paperwork except the will ---if one existed. When the woman died the land passed to the "rightful" heirs - normally their children, with no paperwork involved. They could wait years before selling the land. If the children inherited the land after her life estate was completed and they didn't sell the land, but passed it to their heirs (either through a will or an intestate action), and they passed to theirs..... you could have a hundred year gap with no documentation showing that the land changed hand. You're best bet might be to see who paid taxes on the land. If you follow the tax list from year to year you "might" find when she stopped paying taxes and her heirs started. That will help in determining the date of death. I'm working on a book for Norfolk County (VA) marriages at the Chesapeake Courthouse and I hear the title searchers comments....some are very frustrated that the tax bill on the land is still in the name of someone who died 20, 30 or 40 years ago. The city doesn't care as long as the taxes are being paid. If you are in debt, why transfer the property (and taxes) to your name --- makes it a target for creditors. Also if you're strapped for cash, why transfer the property and pay the filing fees....no, a piece of paper doesn't necessarily exist that will answer your question. I'm trying one more time, asking specifically for info on Polly Riley's death and any heir info. It's so frustrating - you know the info had to be there at some time, but trying to find that "needle in the haystack" now is very difficult. I'm not complaining about the Archives, because they've always been a big help to me, but there's a real trick in asking the exactly right question and then hoping the info is still there!
