    1. [NCWAKE] How to find books
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. This is a marvelous resource. It tells you the closest library possessing your book. I even tried several exotic books--only in college libraries and Lib of Congress. Good for inter-library loan.. It works for genealogy books/. Betty Pace --Forwarded From another mailing list:-- There is an easy way to find books that are in libraries that have their catalogues linked online. This is most public libraries, many college libraries and some genealogical/historical society libraries. The site is WorldCat [OCLC)] http://www.worldcat.org/ Use the search engine to search for a specific title or author or subject. A search for William D. Bennett gave a list of books he had written. Click on the desired book title and it will give a list of libraries that hold that book. If you enter your zip code, it will even sort the libraries by distance from your home. For example: I searched on William D. Bennett and got 1629 hits for William Bennett even though I had specified the middle initial D. I refined the search specifically for William D. Bennett and got 37 hits--a manageble number. I chose "Orange County Records" and got a list of 72 libraries that hold that title, the nearest of which is 66 miles from my home. This has helped me find lots of books. I now keep a list of books and their locations. When I travel, I know what libraries I need to visit!! Happy searching. Martha

    3. I'm trying to trace two of the children of William Bedford and Salome Bissette Winborne. Salome was the daughter of James P. and Mary A. Ferrell Bissette. I think their 3 children were born in Nash Co., and they lived with their Bissette grandparents in Nash in 1910, suggesting that the parents had died, but after that I can only account for Octavia Winborne (1897-1976). She married Milton S. Deans and lived and died in Wake Co. after her mariage. Octavia had a brother named James Fernie Winborne, born 6 Jun 1899 (name spelled Wimborn on WWI draft card), whom I cannot find after 1918. She had another brother named Cumba, born about 1902, also listed as Cumb and Cumbes in the NC Birth Index, which says he and Nora or Nannie Eatman had two children - Estelle Winborne in 1920 and Bettie Winborne in 1924. I can't find any trace of this family either. Do any of these names sound familiar to anyone? And does anyone know death dates for William Bedford and Salome Winborne? Thanks. Joanne Gaudio

    3. Allen's great. He works very hard to locate and survey cemeteries. I always make sure to let him know when I find an unsurveyed cemetery so he can include it. He came all the way down below the RTP to view and take pictures of the last one I sent. If anyone has information on a cemetery that isn't surveyed, make sure to pass it along. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Roger & Marie Cooke" <rcooke@nc.rr.com> To: <ncwake@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, February 25, 2007 7:23 PM Subject: [NCWAKE] Wake County Cemetery Listings >I have contributed some of the listings to Allen Dew and he is, in fact, > a real person. 3. I have contributed some of the listings to Allen Dew and he is, in fact, a real person. The information originated on the NC-DOGS website and he was the person that kept it updated from my understanding and with the listing so large it is now linked on the NC-DOGS website (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncdogs/). He does a lot of work to keep this site up to date and running. I really appreciate all he has done as it has been a very helpful website for myself. Hope this will help answer some of the questions about the cemetery listings. Marie Cooke

    3. Thanks to everyone for the good advice. Sue, does that last info you gave mean they wouldn't send an old (1910) death record out to anyone but a close relative? I've seen that kind of warning before and it sounds as thought they won't give anything to anyone other than a direct and close relative. Does anyone have recent experience with this? Joanne

    3. Can anyone tell me how likely it is that, if a person's name is in the NC Death Collection, there will be a death certificate available? I have a relative who died in 1910, and the Archives order form says that death certificates are available from 1913-1955. Yet I know there were death certificates issued before 1913. The name in the Death Index has the date, the county number (Wilson Co.), and then a number - D008 515. Is that a death certificate number? I'm trying to decide if it's worth sending the Archives $20 and asking, or if they're sure to tell me it's too early. Any advice will be appreciated. 3. Joanne, Should have included this too, from the Wilson Co. web site: Vital Statistics According to law, anyone can obtain a photo copy of any vital record providing a notation is made stating the document will not be used for official purposes. By law, only certain family members may receive certified birth, death or marriage certificates. You may request a certified record of yourself, your spouse, your parents, your children, your siblings or your grandparents. Funeral Homes may request a certified death certificate. Those requesting a certified copy of any vital record must present a valid picture ID. All certificates are $10 per copy either in cash or money order. (My note: So, just a photo copy should be less but it doesn't say how much) Sue Joanne Gaudio wrote: >Can anyone tell me how likely it is that, if a person's name is in the NC Death Collection, there will be a death certificate available? 3. Oh, and yes, if it's listed in the Vital Statistics indexes, the odds are excellent it does exist. ;-) In fact, it would be odd for it to be listed in the indexes if it doesn't exist. Although state law didn't mandate the keeping of birth and death records until 1913, there are the occasional instances of earlier records being kept. However, quite possibly since this precedes the state's mandate (and its standardized forms), the details about the deceased may vary from that which you'd expect to find at a later date. 3. Joanne, Just contact the Wilson Co. Register of Deeds office. You should be able to get a copy from them.... probably less than $1 for a plain photocopy. Looks like if you needed a certified copy (which I doubt), they charge the usual $10 for that. http://www.wilson-co.com/rod.html http://www.wilson-co.com/rodvitalstat.html -Sandy On Feb 25, 2007, at 11:47 AM, Joanne Gaudio wrote: > Can anyone tell me how likely it is that, if a person's name is in > the NC Death Collection, there will be a death certificate > available? 3. Hi Deloris, Yes, I have found a couple of Cemeteries that had family Richardsons. I am still looking at the other names I have too. Thanks so much for that info. There is a cemetery that sits between Lane street and I think Pender Street in Raleigh. Many African Americans are buried there if they don't have the funds to go anywhere else. Its not a large cemetery at all. I just can't remember the name or if there was a name for it. Thanks Rocky for your info. The cemetery you are talking about is on Oakwood Ave. Thanks again, Tee Deloris Williams <delwilliams@insightbb.com> wrote: Tee, Have you done a search of these cemeteries?
