    3. That sounds right Joanne; have seen it just "CB" or other times written out "Chain Bearers". It usually took younger men to do this. Have been told by someone with experience, that rods and chains were very heavy to carry around all day. 3. As an addendum to my query about the "ChB" and the "fee $150" - after looking with a magnifying glass, the $150 is really $1.50 - quite a difference! With that in mind, I wonder if the ChB stands for chainbearers, which I think surveyors would have used back then also. The two names seem to be boys in the 10-12 year old range and might be employed in that fashion. Does that sound right? Joanne Gaudio

    1. [NCWAKE] Abbreviation
    2. Joanne Gaudio
    3. On a surveyor's map drawn in Wake Co. in 1856 for the parties to a lawsuit over land, the abbreviation ChB. was given next to two names - C. M. Williams and J. M. Mooneyham - at the bottom of the page, and the words "fee $150" was indicated after each name. Does anyone know what the "ChB" stands for? The document is from the County certifying that the above map represents the lands in dispute (signed, interestingly, for the county by F. Bevers - has to be Fendol Bevers of later Wake Co. map fame!), and a Surveyors fee of $9 is noted. But we can't figure out the "ChB" beside the names. Any ideas??? Joanne Pearce Gaudio I should add that the lawsuit was between Richard B. Seawell and Henry Bunch over lands previously left by John Nutt, Sr. to various family members in 1819. If anyone knows anything about the lawsuit, I'd sure like to know!

    3. Nancy, Here are a couple of possibilities from Dr. William Powell's North Carolina Gazetteer: Neal Branch: rises in southern Wake County and flows east into Swift Creek; Neills Creek: rises in southern Wake County and flows sw in north Harnett County into Cape Fear River. Named for Red Neill McNeill who settled along its banks in 1740. There's also a Neill Creek Township in Harnett County. And while I'm sure the following has nothing to do with your search, I thought this one was sort of funny and is in Franklin County: Neal Gut, a narrow water-filled defile in central Franklin County which empties into the Tar River. ;-) For what it's worth, Swift Creek seems to be south of Cary/ north of Angier - and seems to flow into Lake Wheeler. I cannot seem to spot Neal Branch as being labeled in my particular Atlas - but there are numerous healthy-sized branches in that area that flow into Swift Creek, so any one of them might be Neal Branch. I do see Neills Creek which is mostly in Harnett County - but you can see the faint lines of its origin just over the Wake line, south of Fuquay-Varina. It my atlas, it looks like Kenneth Creek flows into this Neills Creek. In any case, while both seem to be associated with southern Wake, it does seem that Neal Branch and Neills Creek are two different water courses. Hope this helps, Sandy On Mar 8, 2007, at 10:22 PM, Nancy Hamilton wrote: > Could someone help me identify where Neals Creek is (or was)? 1. [NCWAKE] Fw: Pool Slave Narratives
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. Donald & Henry I see you come from the Pools of Johnston & Wake Co. NC. I explored them for a while looking for the parents of my John Pool (wife Elizabeth). He turned up in Rowan Co., NC and bought expensive property in 1810. Ithink he came from some other county. Sons David Lawton and Joseph. John Pool died in 1832. I think you might be interested in the ex-slave Parker Pool. These are slave narratives written down by the WPA in the 1930s. Parker Pool came from the Pools in your area--I think his master was a Lewis Pool, but not sure. The collection of interviews is contained at the Library of Congress & can be read on-line. Go here: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/snhtml/snhome.html I clicked on search by keyword & went down to the big search box and entered the name Pool. Parker Pool is the 2nd entry I think. You can also search by state, etc. The state doesn't matter because slaves were moved around and after the Civil War, went to other states entirely--the state shown is the state where the interview took place in the 1930s, and the ex-slave would have to have been really young to live from Civil War times to the 1930s. 1. [NCWAKE] Location of Wendell Municipal Cemetery

    3. Can someone familiar with the Wendell area tell me the location of terms of street names of the Wendell Municipal Cemetery? I have a Wake Co. road atlas, and I see a cemetery labeled Wendell Cemetery in the angle formed by East St. and Academy St. on the west side of Wendell, north of Wendell Park. Would this be it? There are also a number of smaller unnamed cemteries marked in the atlas. I tried looking up both "Wendell Municipal Cemetery" and "Wendell Cemetery" on MapQuest, but it didn't recognize either name. In the Wake Co. Heritage Book the section on William Oscar Todd mentions that he purchased almost 500 acres of land from Gibson Pearce in 1849, some of which now comprises the Wendell Municipal Cemetery. Thanks. 3. Hi Debbie - I was looking for two of them and thought I'd try writing to Wilson Co., but if you think they'd be at the Archives to copy, I can hold off on my request to Wilson - I'm looking for Mittie A. (Ann) Riley, born about 1835 and died 20 Apr 1910 in Wilson Co. and Tyler T. (Thomas) Riley, born about 1851 and died 2 Jan 1920 in Wilson Co. Tyler's legal last name was Pearce (he went by Pearce in 1870, on his marriage license in 1874, and in 1880, but he had reverted to Riley by 1900 and all his sons used Riley, as does his entry in the NC Death Index). He was Mittie Ann's son fathered by Applewhite Bunn before her 1854 marriage to J. William Riley. If you find anything, let me know and I'll happily pay for copying, etc. Thanks. Joanne

    3. Does anyone know the parents of the Amanda Riley (1859-1947) who married Curtis V. Todd (1859-1947) about 1877? Curtis was the son of William O. and Eliza Privette Todd. Curtis and his siblings were heirs in the estate of their grandfather, James Todd, in Wake Co., and he was mentioned in a 1778 court document as "Curtis Todd & wife Amanda Riley Todd." I can't find Amanda Riley in the 1870 census. I'm interested in two different Riley families, and I'd sure be interested to know if Amanda was connected to one of them! In 1910 Cirt V. and Amanda Todd lived in Marks Creek and said they'd been married 33 years. Thanks. Joanne Pearce Gaudio
