    2. The “City Cemetery” is located at the intersection of East and Hargett and the property extends north towards New Bern Avenue. It is a 7.5 acre cemetery that has origins dating back to the late 1700’s. Several prominent figures in Raleigh history are buried there. As for the “Old City Cemetery” I am not sure what or where you are referring to. The three City of Raleigh owned and managed cemeteries are: * City Cemetery (described above) * Mt Hope Cemetery (Prospect Street and Old Fayetteville Rd) * O’Rourke Cemetery (Tarboro Road and Pender) My department, Parks and Recreation, maintains the records for the cemeteries. As an important note: Two fires at City Hall in the past destroyed many / most of the original records of these sites. There is not a guide of who is buried where but our Cemetery supervisor does maintain records that track this. If you have any other questions please let me know. Stephen C. 1. Re: [NCWAKE] Raleigh City Cemetery Study
    2. Will try to find more information for you. We have been there several times and it is an old cemetery. I will see if I can find a listing of burials there. Carol Canady Tombstone Inscriptions of Blacks in the City Cemetery, Raleigh, N. C. by _Robert Leon Shaw and Betsy J. Shaw_ (http://www.prairiebluff.com/aacemetery/citycemetery.html#note) ____________________________________ Introduction: City Cemetery was established by an Act of the North Carolina General Assembly in 1798.. It was set up on four acres of land adjacent to the City of Raleigh. Two acres were reserved for the burial of local residents; one acre, for visitors; and one acre, for blacks, both slave and free. The cemetery has grown from the original four acres outside the city limits to a little over seven acres in the heart of downtown Raleigh. Few burials take place there now. The section reserved for blacks according to tradition is full, but tombstones are sparse. Records of the cemetery were destroyed by fire in the 1890’s and again in the early 1930’s. The only records extant are those made by each Superintendent from the standing tombstones. The earliest records were made by L. C. Mulligan in 1934. In his handwritten notebook are two pages entitled, “ People Buried in the Colored Part of the Cemetery.” He lists only their names and a death date. Comparison of his book with existing stones reveals that some of the stones he catalogued over forty years ago are now gone or illegibl e. Many of the stones were handcraftedwith names painstakingly chisled in by unskilled hands. The stones were carved so lightly that today they cannot be read even by “rubbing.” Few blacks have been buried in City Cemetery since the opening of Mount Hope in 1872; however, at one time it was the only public burying ground for either blacks or whites. In the November 1977 NCGS Journal on page 253, Lois S. Neal writes of CATO, a man of color, who was “interred in the burial ground of this city on Sunday evening last.” (From: The Raleigh Minerva, Thursday, February 7, 1811). If CATO had a tombstone, it is either gone or illegible today. The following are the tombstone inscriptions that can be read (some with great effort) of all blacks buried in City Cemetery in addition to a list of the few people mentioned in the Superintendent’s notebook whose stones can no longer be identified. ____________________________________ Section B—l Several stones but only one legible: “Here lies the Body of ALLEN W. McKETHEN who died _____ 183(2). Aged 35.” Section B—2 William son of Ed WILLIAMS and Alley. He died September 10, 1841. Rachal WILLIAMS Born January 24, 1830 Died December 18, 1830. 3. Joanne, If it is in the angle formed by East and Academy as you stated then that must be the right one as the other street bounding that is Todd Hill Drive which is likely named after the William Todd you say owned the land. At the far west end of West Academy St. it makes a very sharp right turn to the north and becomes East St. which is only one block long as it becomes Church St. when it crosses Industrial Dr. When all else fails, throw out MapQuest which is full of all kinds of inaccurate junk and not very user friendly and use Google Maps. To see this location see: http://www.google.com/maps?q=East+St,+Wendell,+NC+27591&sa=X&oi=map&ct=title which is what comes up when you search for East St, Wendell, NC on Google maps. There are also a number of smaller unnamed cemteries marked in the atlas. I tried looking up both "Wendell Municipal Cemetery" and "Wendell Cemetery" on MapQuest, but it didn't recognize either name. In the Wake Co. Heritage Book the section on William Oscar Todd mentions that he purchased almost 500 acres of land from Gibson Pearce in 1849, some of which now comprises the Wendell Municipal Cemetery. 1. Re: [NCWAKE] Neals Creek

    3. Nancy was correct on the location. There is a Neal's Creek (Some here spell it Neill's Creek) in Fuquay-Varina in southern Wake Co. where she asked about. I am looking right now at the west fork behind my house and the east fork in front of my house. I have already sent her info on it's location. She mentioned other landmarks she felt it would be near the land she wanted to find in an email to me and they are also in Fuquay-Varina. This creek does flow toward Harnett County and it likely the same creek, though it disappears on maps and in satellite pics just before reaching the Harnett County line. The deed she has shows the land as being on both sides of the east fork of Neal's Creek in Wake County. Since the east fork is only about 4 blocks long and flows into the larger west fork only a few hundred feet from here, and since I am in the middle of it, the land would be within sight of me. In fact the land my home is on is sub-divided from the only piece of land I am aware of to have ever been that big on the east fork as the rest of the east fork is in downtown. I am likely to be sitting on the land she is interested in. 3. Stephen, I'd just like to say that I am very pleased and impressed that the City Planning department has the knowledge and foresight to retain the Chicora Foundation for the project you describe. They are truly the best there is at cemetery restoration. 1. [NCWAKE] Raleigh City Cemetery Study
    2. Hello, My name is Stephen Bentley and I am a Planner with the City of Raleigh. You and / or your organization have been identified as an interested stakeholder for a study of Raleigh’s three city-owned historic cemeteries (Raleigh City Cemetery, Mount Hope and O’Rourke). Recently the City of Raleigh hired a consultant, the Chicora Foundation, to develop a strategic plan for the inventory and restoration of Raleigh’s historic cemeteries. This study will review each site, the City’s maintenance / management practices, assess any needed improvements, conduct a public meeting, review historical documents and more. This study is the first of many phases of an overall process by the City of Raleigh to strategically plan for the future of the cemeteries. At this point in the study process we are in the early planning stages. The Chicora Foundation will come from South Carolina next week to Raleigh to conduct a lot of their field research. If you have information you would like to provide for this study or would like to comment on the cemeteries please contact me at the information listed below. We expect to have a public meeting this spring to discuss the cemeteries. I will forward you and your group the specific date, time and location of the meeting when it is established. Thank you for you time and interest, Stephen Stephen C. Bentley Parks Planner Raleigh Parks and Recreation P.O.
