The commissions address is 1100 Navaho Drive GL-2, Raleigh, NC 27609 and their fax number is (919) 981-2536 The phone number for Archaelogy is 715-2671. 1. [NCWAKE] Oakwood Cemetery
    2. Does anyone on the list know which NC State department handles cemetery removals? There are 44 unmarked graves in Oakwood Cemetery, Section A, that were moved from the Cope family cemetery in 1985. There were only two marked graves: a young boy, and John Cope, who is my 3rd great grandfather. I would like to know where the original cemetery was located. I have other early Wake Co ancestors who were also buried in family cemeteries that apparently were moved or no longer exist. Thank you, Phyllis Mistrot ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    1. [NCWAKE] James Hall of Wake & Johnston Co. NC
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. Does anyone have anything on this family of James Hall of Wake & Johnston Co. NC? There is also a James Hall in 1850 Guilford Co. NC and he may be related to Zilpha Hall Pace, who also lived in 1850 Guilford Co. NC. Revolutionary Pension Request form from 1820 (Johnston Co. NC) identifies JAMES HALL as having been born in 1757. It is difficult to read but he may have enlisted in the Patriot cause in Wake Co. NC or Johnston Co. NC and served several tours in the American militia or line. Apparently he died in 1821, about a year after the pension was approved. His wife is identified as EDEA DELK/BELK HALL daughter of Jacob Delk/Belk. EDEA died in 1848. His children are shown as: Sally b. 1787 Mary b. 1789 Susanna b. 1793 James b. 1795 Edea b. 1797 John b. 1799 Rachel b. 1802 Reddick/Riddick b. 1805 Beda b. 1808 Green b. 1812 1820 Johnston Co. NC census Hall James 1 1 0 0 0 1 - 0 0 0 0 1 M1-10years = 1 M10-15 years = 1 M45+ = 1 F45+ = 1 In 1853 Reddick/Riddick/Redick and Green Hall filed papers with a court in Georgia (county not legible) about the pension. Apparently they had moved from Johnston Co. NC to Georgia. They said they were the only surviving children of their parents, but that doesn't seem possible to me. This family may be linked to my ZILPHA HALL(b.1798-2000) who married ALSEY PACE in Johnston Co NC in 1820. In the 1820 Johnston Co. NC census, an Alsey Pace and a James Hall lived close to one another. Betty Pace

Burning Coal is an incorporated, non-profit [501 (c) (3)] organization. Burning Coal's mission is to produce literate, visceral, affecting theatre that is experienced, not simply seen. Burning Coal produces explosive reexaminations of overlooked classic and modern plays, as well as new plays, whose themes and issues are of immediate concern to our audience, using the best local, national and international artists available. We work toward a theatre of high-energy performances and minimalist production values. The emphasis is on literate works that are felt and experienced viscerally, unlike more traditional linear plays, at which audiences are most often asked to observe without participating. Race and gender non-specific casting is an integral component of our perspective, as well as an international viewpoint. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    3. Hello Listers, Kinchen Freeman who died in 1828 in Wake Co. was the brother to my direct ancestor, Wiley Freeman. Kinchen left six minor children; his widow, Tellatha, later married Hiatt Barham. In the book Vital Records from Raleigh, Wake Co., N. C. Newspapers, Kinchen's death notice was abstracted and his age was given as "about 85." The printed abstract reads "Freeman: D. At his residence in this county, on the 23d inst., Mr. Kinchen Freeman, aged about 85. RRsw Fri 4 July 1828 3:5 This age was confusing and presented a lot of problems when trying to reconcile his family, as well as the age of his siblings. I was fortunate to obtain a Xerox copy of the death notice in the newspaper. There is absolutely no doubt that the age reads "35" rather than the "85" as abstracted. I will be happy to scan and send a copy of the article to anyone interested. The purpose of this email is two fold. First, is the desire to set the record straight as to the age of Kinchen Freeman who died in Wake County in 1828. The second is to encourage everyone to use abstracted records as leads, but not as proof positive. I do appreciate anyone who gives his time and effort to abstract and publish records. But that should not absolve the researcher of the responsibility of verifying the information. I would have saved a lot of headache had I verified this information much earlier. Wanda Ridge

    1. [NCWAKE] Wake County Historical Society meeting
    2. Thanks to Hope Blackford for sharing the following announcement: The Wake County Historical Society Presents Petty Van Scoyoc Just a Horse-Stopping Place: An Oral History of Cary, North Carolina Peggy Van Scoyoc has compiled a wonderful oral history of Cary, North Carolina, "Just a Horse-Stopping Place." Her book is a collection of oral history interviews describing life in Cary, North Carolina. The book spans the period before the Civil War until today, but it is mostly centered in the mid-twentieth century. Thirty-seven narrators tell rich stores about growing up, going to school, going to church, farming and other work endeavors, medicine, and entertainments; in general, life in a small town where the school was the center of the community. They describe how they survived world and national historic events and what they contributed to the causes. And they explain how their small town led the state and nation in education, and later in the civil rights movement. The author has a degree from University of San Francisco and further studied oral history at UNC Chapel Hill and Duke University. Van Scoyoc initiated the Cary Oral History Program for the Friends of the Page-Walker Cultural Arts and History Center.
