Powell. Copyright 1994 by the University of North Carolina Press. Used by permission of the publisher. Royall, William (30 July 1823-3 Jan. 1893), Baptist minister and educator, was born in Edgefield District, S.C., the son of William and Mary Ann Riley Royall. His great-grandfather William Royall, settled on James Island near Charleston, S.C., in the latter part of the seventeenth century on a grant of land obtained from the Crown. For a short time young Royall also lived on James Island. At age ten he was ready for high school and his parents moved to Charleston. There, under the influence of Dr. Basil Manly, Sr., Royall made a profession of religion and joined Manly's church at age eleven. He began the study of languages under Joseph Lee and attended classes at the Furman Manual Labor and Classical Academy, in Fairfield District, S.C., where his uncle, William E. Bailey, was principal and Dr. William Hooper (later president of Wake Forest College) was head of the theology department. From this school Royall entered South Carolina College in Columbia at age fifteen. After graduation in 1841 he read law under Attorney General Henry Bailey and taught classes in Bailey's academy in the morning to support himself.. As an active church member he was soon under the influence of Drs. J. L. Reynolds and Thomas Curtis, both pastors in the city. Royall decided to enter the ministry and moved to Mount Pleasant, S.C., where he was in charge of a school and studied theology under Curtis and Dr. William T. Brantly. He supplied the pulpit for Brantly on several occasions and was ordained in Charleston in 1843. In 1844 Royall took charge of three country churches in Abbeville and Edgefield districts, S.C. He then served churches in Georgia for two years before moving to Ocala, Fla. In Florida he assisted a number of missions and remained there until 1855. His own poor health and that of his family after suffering from malaria prompted him to accept a call to become principal of the preparatory school of Furman University. This was the beginning of his great work in the field of education. "From this period he never quit the recitation-room," according to one biographer. In 1859 Royall became professor of languages at Wake Forest College. His method was analytical, logical, and philosophical and, according to F. P Hobgood, "created great enthusiasm in his own department" and its "stimulating and quickening influence was felt by the entire college." After the Civil War began, Wake Forest College closed for lack of students and Royall was appointed chaplain of the Fifty-fifth Regiment of North Carolina Troops. He served from 20 May 1862 to 24 July 1863, when he resigned because of a physical disability. Taking notice of his appointment, the Biblical Recorder described him as a "finished scholar, an interesting preacher, and a man of industry and energy." It predicted that he would do much good in his work as chaplain. In 1866 Royall and three other professors (including his son, William Bailey) reopened Wake Forest College and began to prepare to instruct new students. Royall organized the course work into a flexible system of schools to replace the inflexible prewar curriculum. In 1870 he resigned his professorship to become president of the Raleigh Baptist Female Seminary. Failing health caused him to withdraw from that position, but after a period of rest he accepted the presidency of Louisburg Female College. In 1874 he moved to Texas and became president of Baylor Female College in Independence. While in Texas, Royall also taught in seminaries in Bryan and Calvert. He moved to San Antonio in 1878 and remained there until 1879, when he accepted the presidency of Jonesboro College, Tenn. During his eighteen-month stay he also served the Baptist church in Jonesboro. In June 1880 he was elected professor of modern languages at Wake Forest College. In this post he taught French, German, and English and assisted in the School of Moral Philosophy. In 1888 the growth of the college required the establishment of a separate Chair of English, which Royall was chosen to fill. In 1889 The University of North Carolina awarded him an honorary doctor of laws degree. Earlier, in 1868, he had received an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Furman University. While still engaged in the field of education, Royall assisted from time to time with interim pastorates in the Wake Forest Baptist Church and served several pastorates in the area around Wake Forest. He was the author of a book, A Treatise on Latin Cases and Analysis, published in New York in 1860. One of his sermons was published in 1866, and he wrote numerous articles, essays, and sketches for the Wake Forest Student magazine. Royall was married on 12 Oct. 1843 to Elizabeth Bailey the oldest daughter of Dr. Robert S. Bailey. She died on 24 July 1892. The couple had three sons -- William Bailey and two others, and two daughters, Mary (Mrs. F. P. Hobgood) and Mrs. W. C. Powell. Royall was spending the holidays with his daughter and son-in-law in Savannah, Ga., when he died suddenly. I am not a Brown descendent or researcher; however, my Aunt, Annie Laurie Strickland, was married to Henry Randall Brown of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on December 25, 1936. Henry Randall Brown was born January 4, 1909; and, if my memory is not too far off, I believe that he died approximately 1961. Henry Randall Brown was the son of Simon Henry Brown (DOB June 1, 1863 and DOD August 19, 1935). Simon Henry Brown married Devalsco Eugenia Hargrove, daughter of Daniel Jackson and Elizabeth Thomas Hargrove, on December 1, 1891. Last week I was going through some old pictures and came across a folder with the heading of "The Browne Family of Virginia, North Carolina, and Alabama -- Rock Hill, S.C. July 25, 1956." It begins with, "Full credit for this work is given to Col. Woolsey Finnell of Tuscaloosa, Ala., who spent many years and much money collecting the data for it, to his family, and especially to his daughter, Mrs. Nubia Livingston, who did the major part of the correspondence, the assimilating of this material, and typing it." (NOTE: The information in the first paragraph of this message regarding Henry Randall Brown's parents, date of birth and date of marriage to Annie Laurie Strickland is also taken from the information prepared and in the folder giving credit to research of Col. Woolsey Finnell and his family and daughter, Mrs. Nubia Livingston.) I, Carolyn Strickland Smalley, take no credit whatsoever for any work and information provided and know and realize that all credit is to be given as stated above to Col. Woolsey Finnell of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and to his family and daughter, Mrs. Nubia Livingston. I do not know, nor am I familiar with Col. Finnell or Mrs. Livingston or any of their family. Today, June 22, 2007, I have spoken on the phone with Woolsey Finnell, III. Mr. Finnell has kindly given his permission for this information to be provided here to anyone who may be interested in the information herein. I sincerely hope that I have not made any mistakes and should anyone find any errors I have made, please let me know. So, in your searching, please forgive any errors that I have made in re-typing the information. Carolyn Strickland Smalley

Thanks to Hope Blackford for sharing the following: A hand written, three page letter, filled with the complaints of the Director of The North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station in Raleigh, Chas. W. Dabney, Jr., Ph. D. On September 8th, 1886, he writes to a physician in Lynchburg, Virginia. He explains that his wife has been very ill, and apologizes for being late in responding to the doctor. He goes on to state other reasons for being tardy. _http://tinyurl.com/yt6cfb_ (http://tinyurl.com/yt6cfb) Two cartes de visite antique photographs from the J. W. Joanne, I'll check that out. That's a good idea. I'm about half way through now -- but I won't be able to work on this tomorrow at all. You are welcome. I'm trying to type up this info and will post as an attachment to the Browne mailing list at Rootsweb when I'm done. I'm having a difficult time following the exact set up -- but, hopefully I can get it done enough success to make sense to anyone out there who is at least familiar with the names. I probably won't get finished until this weekend, though. I'm sorry; but I don't have a copy of the will. The information in the file states: "Thomas Browne, the founder of this branch of the Browne family, and his three brothers, Dr. Jesse, Randall and another brother whose name we do not have, emigrated from England to Southampton County, Virginia, in 1737. Thomas Brown's will was probted in 1765 in what was then Jerusalem, but is now Courtland, in Southampton County, Virginia. The name of his wife is unknown. Dr. Jesse Browne was a prominent doctor and must have been quite willing to serve all who were sick, whether they had money to pay for his services or not. His brothers and he built a hospital at or near Jerusalem, where Doctor Jesse could and did treat those who were not able to pay. Dr. Jesse Browne had one son, Jesse, Jr., of which we have record. There was also a Daniel Brown, who was a son of one of the above, who married Patience Vick on January 16, 1783, who was the daughter of William and Martha Boykin (Or Martha Burwell) Vick. (She was the grand-daughter of William Vick, Sr., and the great-grand-daughter of Josept Vick.) Thomas Browne's children, of which we have record, were: 1. Jesse, who married Esther Stephenson, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Stephenson, Sr. Jesse made his will September 24, 1977. It was presented in court by his wife, Esther, on November 8, 1781. Their children were: A. Henry Browne B. Sally Browne C. Thomas Browne 2. Sarah Browne 3. Tabitha Browne 4. Martha Browne, who married James Allen A. Henry Browne, son of Jesse Browne, born in Southampton County, Virginia, in 1764 moved to Wake County, North Carolina, where he married Lucy Womack (daughter of Benjamin Womack), who was born in 1769 and died in Wake County, December 3, 1844. They were married about 1789. Henry Browne died in Wake County, July 1, 1849." I am somewhat confused here as to the pick up of Henry Browne, son of Jesse Browne being listed as 4. A. after Martha Browne, who married James Allen. I will try and decipher this or either possibly type the whole several pages as a document exactly as is in the folder and sent out to Rootsweb. I hope that this small amount of information can give you an idea if this is the family that you are interested in. Nubie Livingston, who did the major part of the correspondence, the assimilating of this material, and typing it." (NOTE: The information in the first paragraph of this message regarding Henry Randall Brown's parents, date of birth and date of marriage to Annie Laurie Strickland is also taken from the information prepared and in the folder giving credit to research of Col. Woolsey Finnel.) The information in the folder begins first regarding Thomas Brown's will that was probated in 1765 in what was then Jerusalem, but is now Courtland, in Southampton County, Virginia. The name of his wife was unknown. Then it mentions Dr. Jesse Browne who was a prominent doctor. There is quite a bit of information on those who come after. Should anyone like me to look up any names, please give me as much information as you can and I will try to help in any way that I can. Carolyn Strickland Smalley Alabama

Isn't Wake Forest (the city/town) in Forsyth County, North Carolina ... as opposed to Wake County? -----Original Message----- From: Roger & Marie Cooke <rcooke@nc.rr.com> To: ncwake@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, 18 Jun 2007 3:57 pm Subject: [NCWAKE] Crenshaw Hall There is a Crenshaw Hall Plantation in Wake Forest which is in Wake Co. I found an article from 2003 in The Wake Forest Gazette. The link is http://www.wakeforestgazette.com/august2003/volume16/Crenshaw_Hall_zoning.htm. I personally don't know anything about the development. Hope this will be of some help.
