Does anyone know what year the sun was totally eclipsed in the vicinity of Wake or Johnston Co. NC? Is there a web site that would give this information? I have the Revolutionary War Pension Application of James Hall of Johnston Co., NC. In it he says that he enlisted in the 10th Regiment of the NC line under Capt. Alsa High.(enlisted for period of nine months). He could not remember the exact year but said it was the year in which the sun was totally eclipsed--this was either in the county of Wake or the county of Johnston in NC. Part of his enlistment was under Captains Ramsey and Quinn. He was discharged in SC when his enlistment was up. He later re-enlisted but I don't know how long after his first discharge occurrred. He re-enlisted as a substitute for a fellow in Franklin Co. NC.. Does anyone know what year the sun was totally eclipsed in the vicinity of Wake or Johnston Co. NC? Is there a web site that would give this information? The pension application says the first enlistment was in the later stages of the American Revolution--that would make it in the late 1770s or early 1780s. Betty Pace
She link below. http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/JSEX/JSEX-NA.html I etered coordinates for both Raleigh and Smithfield and found there was a total eclipse on 24 June 1778. -Carl Oehmann ----- Original Message ----- From: "Betty A. I am only related to the Mangums by marriage. Ransom Sutherland of Granville County and then Wake County was the father of Rebecca that married Mr. Mangum. Ransom Sutherland was a Col. in the revolutionary war. I have heard of Pleasant Mangum, but don't know anything about him. I appreciate your help in trying to get to the Mangum group. Hope you enjoy Northern VA. I was born and raised in Roanoke and went to college in Harrisonburg. My father's ancestors were from Augusta county. Check the yahoo group and try to get on it. Lynn has been sick...gall bladder surgery, and it is possible that the group may go under. See where you fit in the genealogy. Mine comes from Pleasant Mangum in Granville Co. Do you know who you descend from? Lynn also has a book on "Pleasant Mangum and his Kin"...don't know if he still has copies, and I don't know where mine is...we moved recently from Northern VA to Blue Ridge, and we haven't unpacked everything. I will look for it and check your relative. Do you know any other names? My great grandfather was John G. Faulkner, son of Lucy Mangum Falconer/Faulkner and Joseph F. Falconer/Faulkner. See if you can access the Mangum group. The genealogy is there, and you may find your relative. Keep in touch. Many thanks for this information. My family is the Sutherlands of Prince Edward county, VA as well as Franklin county VA. I am looking for a cemetery in Wake County that holds the remains of Priestly Hinton Mangum and His wife Rebecca. There is a "Mangum" cemetery in Wake Forest, but no headstones, only river stones and field stones which leads me to believe it is a slave cemetery. This man was very well known and an upstanding person in the community and I feel that he had a headstone wherever he is buried. I checked Durham and Chapel Hill, but they aren't there. Can anyone help me? Thanks, Joanne
I must have too many Liles names stuffed into my head! The Jonathan Liles of Nash Co. I mentioned didn't have a son named Drury, as I said. He had a daughter named Winny - and the wife of Drury Liles was Winifred High. Sorry about that. Joanne Pearce Gaudio
This isn't only a Wake Co. issue, but since there are so many Liles located in Wake, this seems like the best list for my question. I'm descended from Kinchen Liles/Penelope Strickland ->Wrightman Liles/Nancy Jordan -> James W. Liles/Jane Riley -> Alice Liles/John R. Pearce, who are my great-grandparents. I've had very good luck (and lots of very good help from NC listers!) researching the whole family from Kinchen and Penelope on down. Now I thought I'd like to look at Kinchen's siblings. The Wake Co. Heritage Book says that Kinchen and his three siblings - Micajah, Chloe, and Drury - are the children of Lewis and Elizabeth Liles. I found their Johnston Co. marriages confirmed in the NC Marriage bonds - Micajah m. Nancy Woodard in 1793, Chloe m. Micajah Woodard in 1794, and Drury m. Winifred High in 1801. But after that - almost nothing. Drury Lyles is in the 1810 JoCo census, and Micajah Liles is in the 1820 JoCo census, but that's about it. Of course, if they lived in Wake, I can't look at those two censuses. I've seen some indication that Micajah's family went to SC and then to AL, but I can't find any confirmation of that. Then in 1850 there's a Jonathan Liles, who married Matilda Stallings in 1838, living in Nash Co. and he has sons named Kinchen and Drury - very suggestive that they might be uncles or even, in Drury's case - a father. Yet I can't find out anything about Jonathan before 1850. So - my question is - does ANYONE know ANYTHING about these other children of Lewis Liles????? Many thanks to anyone who can help! Dear Mr. Denmark, I just would like to thank you for making these photos available to all of us. I live in Oregon and am always hoping to find someone from the Raleigh area with old photos that I can make copies from. Regardless of whether I find any of my family photos or not, I just want to say that this is by far the nicest effort that I have ever seen on any list. The Archives does not keep original copies of individual deeds (unless such were in the estate files, which would be extremely unusual). The Archives has microfilm copies of deeds that were copied from the original documents into the deedbooks at the time of recordation; the owner of the property would have kept the original document. (which is why the signatures in the deedbooks are not of the original grantor but some clerk's transcribed copy of the grantor's signature). The Archives DOES have the original early deedbooks for Wake Co. (which is unusual); they were sent over there by the current Register of Deeds in Wake Co. who is a former Archives employee, probaby due to space issues. Almost all counties keep their original deedbooks in the counties, even though there are microfilm copies at the Archives. Yes, Jeanette. The newspaper where the obituary was printed has a page for condolences. The site is http://www.legacy.com/newsobserver/GB/GuestbookView.aspx?PersonId=90385302 Bob had no website for his own research that I am aware of. I had just recently talked to him and we had made plans for him to stop by the house, as I had not seen him in a few weeks. He had been a good friend for 34 years. We began working at the same electronics factory in 1973 and he and I were also both "Ham" radio operators. I only recently found out he was a member of the NC Wake Rootsweb list, when he saw one of my emails and replied to it. As long as I had known him I never knew we also shared a common interest in genealogy. He lived about 2 miles from here. I'll miss him. Thank you, Tim, for sending the obituary for Bob Butler. He was very helpful to me in my search for more information on my "Spence" ancestors from Wake, Cumberland, and Harnett. He enjoyed researching and helping others, and I for one, will miss his help.
