    2. The Dorthea Dix Hospital, to my knowledge, is still operating. It will close sometime in the next two years and I believe the patients will be transferred to the Butner Hospital. 2. Just a note for others to think about. I was checking into a great Aunt that had been committed to an insane hospital in Alabama and found out that for a few dollars, they would copy her file for me. I got the complete medical records, along with letters she recieved from her relatives while she was there. This was Bryce Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.... my Aunt had died in the 1940's. ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour

    2. The state hospital in Raleigh was named Dorothy Dix Hospital, commonly known as Dix Hill. It was a hospital for the insane. While the buildings are still there, the hospital has been closed. Go to the official state site, > http://www.ncgov.com/ <, click on "agencys" then "Health and Human Services". There is quite possibly a cemetery there also. 3. Judy, See if anything within these documents helps you. You may be able to find something closer to the year 1940.... this report deals with 1904, but I think there are others. http://docsouth.unc.edu/nc/statehospital1904/menu.html On Aug 29, 2007, at 10:09 AM, Judy Fries wrote: > So I'm wondering if this relative died of heart & kidney failure in > a state hospital, was he a prisoner maybe? > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NCWAKE- > request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes > in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Judy, The term "inmate" was frequently used in earlier years as meaning "patient," which perhaps was the case here. One thought comes to mind here is that of Dorothea Dix State Hospital in Raleigh - which was a mental health facility (in previous years often referred to as a hospital "for the insane" - with "insane" actually meaning dementia along with any other number of mental health disorders, oft times, tho not always, those associated with aging, which today we simply would not consider "insanity.") Is there, per chance, a physical address of the hospital listed on the death certificate? -Sandy On Aug 29, 2007, at 10:09 AM, Judy Fries wrote: > So I'm wondering if this relative died of heart & kidney failure in > a state hospital, was he a prisoner maybe?

    2. Hi Judy, I don't know about the Hospital still in operation, but Cardio means Heart and Renal means Kidney, so he may have had kidney desease, but the actual cause of death was heart failure, which is common with many deseases, that the heart gives out at the end. 1. Re: [NCWAKE] Help Please
    2. Judy, It most likely means that he had dementia. There were no Rest Homes back then, so when an old person lost their memory, they were placed in the State Hospital, for the insane, etc. My ggrandfather died there, too, in AR. My Mom said that he would go for walks and couldn't find his way home. The family couldn't take care of him, so he was placed in the State Hospital.
