Volume 4 of the Granville County Genealogical Society cemetery books will be available November 1, 2007 ! There are two cemeteries in this book Elmwood and Old Oxford Cemetery, with over 4500 burials listed in the two cemeteries. This book represents an incredible amount of time and research by several society members to record all the information on every grave marker in these old cemeteries. The price will be $30.00 per book, which includes shipping and handling charges. The book has a special section of pictures and genealogical information that is inscribed on slabs located in Elmwood. It also includes the Laws and Statutes pertaining to cemeteries in the state, and deeds to the Elmwood Cemetery as additional information. Look at our web site for more details: http://www.gcgs.org and ordering information. ----- Allen Dew Webmaster, GCGS .

I just wanted to say "thank you" to Allen Dew for getting the Dorothea Dix cemetery online as much as humanly possible. To my knowledge, I have no one buried there, but even more than the other cemeteries his website has online, a cemetery like this one is an invaluable resource. All too often ancestors who were institutional inmates have been lost in the mists of time. This should be a huge help to folks looking for lost ancestors. Thanks Allen! Joanne Pearce Gaudio
Thanks to the help of the Community Relations Department of Dorothea Dix Hospital, the most complete listing of known burials at the Dorothea Dix Cemetery is now available at Cemetery Census. http://cemeterycensus.com/nc/wake/cem244.htm link to cemetery. Of the approximately 960 burials in the cemetery, 754 have been identified by name. These 754 burials are included in the listing along with their date of death and last known county of residence. We have pictures of a few of the family provided grave markers. In the early 1990s, small permanent grave markers were placed on over 700 of the identified burials. These small markers have the name and date of death. Today, most of the small markers are buried beneath the grass covering. ----- Allen Dew 3230 Walters Rd Creedmoor, NC 27522-8641 voice: 919-471-3548 or 919-528-0161 cell: 919-423-5300 E-mail: mailto:allendew@cemeterycensus.com Web Pages: <http://cemeterycensus.com> .

I am seeking information about the will of Edward Moore of Wake County NC. He died about 1815. Does anyone out there have any information about this man? One of his brothers was Lewis Moore. Would appreciate any information you might have. Joanne Sutherland jsutherland6@nc.rr.com
Is there anyone on the list working on descendants of William Arnold Rhodes and Burrilda Riley and/or descendants of James W. Liles and Jane Riley? James W. and Jane Riley's daughter Alice Liles Pearce is my great-grandmother, and I've been working on a theory that Jane and Burrilda were sisters and the daughters of Mary Polly Nutt Riley and James Duncan Riley. I'd love to discuss my ideas with someone else who is working on a family connected to either Burrilda Riley Rhodes or Jane Riley Liles. Feel free to contact me at my personal email, jgaudio@charter.net. Thanks. Joanne Pearce Gaudio
I heard an interview with author Joanna C. Scott on NC TV (UNCTV--Book Watch) recently. The author of a novel explained how she researched her book, explaning how she uncovered many facts (as background) about race relations and social conditions during the Civil War in Piedmont NC. I found the book at my local library. I can't say that this is a great novel but I found it interesting in the historical detail about social conditions and race relations, especially since a large portion takes place in Salisbury, where much of my family lived during the Civil War. It was not a pleasant time there with many shortages and the townspeople torn between pro-war and abolitionist factions in the late stages of the Civil War. It also touches on Chapel Hill, Gold Hill and the gold mine, and a little on Greensboro. In case you do not like fiction, you might want to read these pages about life in Salisbury itself. pp. 167-167; 221-227; 250-261; 270-279; 295-303 General readers might want to read the whole book, which I found interesting. Whether you want to trust the historical research, it is up to you--as is true with any work of history, whether fiction or non-fiction. Hi Allen, You are correct. The home, Spring Hill, was to the best of my knowledge Theophilus Hunter's home. The house still stands on the Dorthea Dix hospital Grounds. The "Dix Hill" property was once one of Theophilus Hunter's many land grant properties. For those interested, Alan B Markham produced 2 fabulous "Land Grant" maps (Orange and Wake Counties) which show all all grant tracts, grantee name and date. Mr Markham passed away a number of years ago, but his son holds the copyright and still sells copies of the maps. A.B. Markham is listed in the Durham, NC phone book and can be found easily on an online phone site such as www.switchboard.com I believe A.B. Markham lives on Markham Avenue, but I may be mistaken. Hi Roy, I noticed that there is a Adelaide Virginia Hunter Hill (b. 19 May 1809 - d. 21 Sep 1864) who is the wife of William Gaddy Hill, and daughter of Theophilus Hunter of Springhill. Buried in Section: E-2. Lot: 37 of the Old Raleigh City Cemetery. I'm not sure if the Springhill mentioned is the same as the one associated with the Dorothea Dix State Hospital area. The #238 - Raleigh City Cemetery listing at CemeteryCensus.com was recently updated with lots of new information not found elsewhere. http://cemeterycensus.com/nc/wake At 01:04 PM 09/03/07, you wrote: >I am looking for info on parents of Theophilus Hunter . >I believe his father was Isaac Hunter. >It looks like the Isaac Hunter of Chowan Co &the >Isaac Hunter of Duplin Co both had sons named Theophilus Hunter. >I am trying to find which Isaac Theophilus Hunter of Wake Co belonged to. > >Roy ----- Allen Dew voice: 919-471-3548 or 919-528-0161 cell: 919-423-5300 E-mail: mailto:allendew@mindspring.com Web Pages: <http://apdew.com> .
I too am looking into the Hunter/Jones family but for different reasons. This is what I have. Isaac 'Tavern Owner Crabtree Creek' Hunter, Jr., brother to Theophillus Hunter, Sr.. married Rebecca Hart. Does anyone know who her parents were? They had a son, Alexander Hunter, who married Frances Ally Jones, February 24, 1798, Wake Co, NC. Who was her parents? Their daughter, Frances T. Hunter, married Joseph Burwell Jones, December 07, 1816, Wake Co, NC. His parents were Francis Nathaniel 'Of White Plains' Jones and Rachel Perry. ======================== Alsey Hunter, son of Isaac 'Of Swift Creek' Hunter, married Charlotte Jones, January 08, 1810, Wake Co, NC. Her father was Levi Jones. Their daughter, Nancy Ann Hunter, married William Eldridge Smith, February 12, 1834, Wake Co, NC. This is the line that I am researching. William's parents were Thomas Smith and Barbary Jones, who married December 04, 1797, Wake Co, NC. I am looking (forever) for her parents. With all these Jones married about the same time and same place, one would think that there was a connection. ===================== I have never found who Barbary Jones parents were but there was a Bondsman: Burwell Jones for their wedding. Any ideas? ================ Reuben Bonahan Hunter, Sr., brother of Theophillus Hunter, Sr., married Sarah Speight and had several children with name of Burrell Hunter, Isaac 'Of Swift Creek' Hunter (Father of Alsey Hunter listed above), Whitmell 'Whitney' Hunter, Theophillus Hunter, Dempsey Hunter, Cader 'Cad' Hunter, Needham Hunter, Sarah Hunter, Lydia Hunter, Elizabeth Hunter, Patience Hunter, Mary Hunter, Winnifred 'Winnie' Hunter, and Reuben Bonahan Hunter, Jr.. ================== Helen ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
