On October 17, 1883, those Tar Heel Confederates who had been buried in a mass grave at Arlington were re-interred at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh. I am speculating that there would have been a well-attended ceremony for this occasion and that the area newspapers would have covered it. Does anyone know how I could go about checking the newspapers of that time (the Raleigh News and Observer; the Smithfield Herald?) for such an article? Thanks for any suggestions. Steve Dixon
I am a new subscriber and descendant of William J. BLAKE, b. February 6, 1806. His parents were Thomas Samuel BLAKE and Mary CLEMENTS, married in Wake County March 20, 1797. Thomas' parents were Samuel BLAKE (d. June 24, 1807 in Wake) and Amy REDDICK. Do these folks look familiar? I will be glad to correspond and share info. Thanks, Ron Massey Shreveport, LA

Can someone tell me why there is no 1790 Wake Co.NC Census except the Morgan District? Thanks Wanda
O.K. Wanda, After I emailed you, I kept thinking something was wrong. I knew Morgan didn't sound right for the area. I had always just seen Hillsboro. So, if you have someone in Morgan District, they aren't from Wake Co., in 1790. So, Here is is.. From Helen Leary's "North Carolina Research". The 1790 census for NC had districts (Not all of the state was well populated) The counties were grouped in 8 districts and then the districts were arranged alphabetically. Edenton, Fayette, Halifax, Hillsboro, Morgan, New Bern, Salisbury, and Wilmington. So, that's why you can't figure out which county a household is in, by the page #'s in the index of 1790. The now, counties of Randolph, Chatham, Orange, Caswell, WAKE and Granville were all in one district. "Hillsboro". Morgan District that you were asking about was the now counties of: Burke, Wilkes, Lincoln and Rutherford. Edenton District was the now counties of: Hertford, Bertie, Gates, Currituck, Camden, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Chowan and Tyrrell Fayette District which contained the now counties of Anson, Richmond, Moore, Cumberland, Robeson and Sampson Halifax District, the now counties of Warren, Franklin, Halifax, Nash, Edgecomb and Northampton. New Bern District was Johnston, Wayne, Dobbs, Pitt, Beaufort, Craven, Jones, Carteret and Hyde. Salisbury District: Rockingham and Guilford Wilmington District: Bladen, Brunswick, New Hanover, Duplin and Onslow Counties. Hope this helps. Hi Wanda, I am interested in the "Burned Deeds of Wake Co. N.C. 1770-1832 ". I hope you will put you findings in book form for us to buy. My Burgess family was living in Wake Co. N. C. during this time. Maralee Phillips
Wake County Researchers: Back in July, I posted a message that explained that I was contemplating publishing a book of The Burned Deeds of Wake Co., NC, 1770s to 1832. Currently, there aren't enough libraries and individuals to warrant publishing this data in book form. On my past 7 publications, I would have 100 to 200 books printed. I have actually been working on this project since Spring of 1994, when I registered it at the NC Archives. I may possibly consider publishing this info on a CD. Also, once this data is compiled, it will be microfilmed by the LDS and made available to the Family History Centers throughout the world, as all of my past publications have been. However, the entire microfilming process and cataloging in the FHLC could take up to 2 years. While I was searching through the 7200 pages of the CPQS Minutes, I found a ton of excellent genealogical data. At that time, I was primarily looking for info about my MILLS family who resided in Wake Co., NC from 1810 up to the current day. I will keep you all posted of any updates concerning this project.
