Sam, Several of us Wilder researchers ran into the same conflicting information about some of our WILDERs in the 1790 census. When we looked at the actual census, they were in Wake County, not Caswell County. It was our conclusion that the information at Ancestry.com was in error. JEREMIAH GREEN SLOAN, born 1775, married NANCY CARSON, settled in Iredell County, NC. WILLIAM SHAVER, born early 1800's married LINDSEY JORDAN. Any help appreciated. After 20+ years of researching, these are my hardest to locate. Thanks in advance, Dennis Goodin
Another tidbit to add to Stephen Ellis and Elizabeth Bagwell who were married in 1804 in Wake County and showed up in Greene County, Alabama probably in the 1820's. A friend told me that she had been told about a lady coming to Greene County with the Ellis family and she never married. She is buried with the Ellis family members in a Baptist Church cemetery and her name was Rebecca Cooper, died Oct. 22, 1849, age 56 years, four months and 12 days. I calculated her birth date and she was born June 10, 1793. I have a history of Wake County and Daniel Bagwell, father of Elizabeth, purchased 500 acres of land on the north side of Little River and paid David Cooper 260 pounds for it. Does the Cooper name ring a bell for anyone? I have a copy of the marriage bond for Stephen and Elizabeth and have found a legal document in our courthouse where Elizabeth more or less sued to get or dower/or her part of the estate after Stephen died. He had left everything to his son to take care of his wife but the son died before he did. Things must have been kind of messy. I do not know where he or Elizabeth are buried nor when she died. He did die prior to Rebecca Cooper. Sybil Phillips, Greene County, Alabama
A James Redding and two Francis Reddings appear in the 1790 Wake County census. I am somewhat confused about this census. Ancestry.com indicates that these Reddings were in fact in Caswell County, and the census was made from a reconstructed tax list. Other sources simply say Wake County. Can the exact location of these families be determined by the census? Can anyone clarify this for me? Thanks. Sam Redding

I am posting this and hope that someone can help with the Ellis part. Stephen Ellis married Elizabeth Bagwell Dec. 31, 1804 in Wake County. I have information on the Bagwells and would like to connect with someone in the Ellis family. Stephen and Elizabeth showed up in Greene County, Alabama about the mid 1820's or maybe a little later. Several of their children married into the Isaac Edwards family. Stephen and Isaac are two of my brick walls that we always speak about. I live in Greene County, Alabama and have been to the Archives in Raleigh,NC. Sybil N. Phillips
I am looking for information on Jesse B. Thorn b. 1785 d.1839. Jesse thorn is the son of William, Sr. Thorn b.1747 Chowan County, NC, d.1811 Wake County, NC and Leah King b. 1743 Hertford County NC d.1821 Wake County, NC. I have William's father as John Thorn b. ? Virginia d. ? Wake County, NC. I have Leah's father as John King. Jesse Thorn married in Alabama in 1815. His first and forth sons are listed as born in Alabama and number 2 and 3 born in NC. Documents at his death stated that he owned property in both Alabama and NC. Does any of this tie in to any lines others on the list are working on? Any help would be appreciated. Al Willard
I very much need information or a lookups regarding any Samuel WALL on any Wake County, NC Tax Lists from 1790 to 1803. I am interested in the information about acreage, polls, and anything else on the lists. What do I need to do to find these tax lists? Thanks, Tim Walls
Hi Lists, O.K. The complete extractions for Chatham Co, for the 1850 census, with all the "Free Blacks" is complete on my page. If anyone is interested in African American research. I have recognized some of the names that are also, what is now called Melungeon (tri-racial) groups. (i.e. Goins/Goens) Happy Hunting. Sue Ashby http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncchatha/chatham.htm
Does anyone have the present add. of James McCullough who lived in Raleigh in the 1940-50s? No family left there. If so,please E-mail me at [email protected] Many thanks. J. Paxton Fisher
Hello list(s) I have just added a new section to the Chatham Co., page. I've extracted all the free blacks in the first half of the 1850 census and listed them separately, and the families they were enumerated with. It makes it much easier to find them and see the relationships. Hope this will help some one who is searching for their ancestors of black or mixed heritage. I am asking for anyone who has old bible records that have the slaves listed in the bible, to please contact me with the information. I have quite a few names in an old bible that I have access to and plan on extracting that. I would like to have any other that you would be willing to send me.. Thanks, Sue Ashby http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncchatha/chatham.htm
Is there anyone in this group tracing the Franks (Francke) family? I am especially interested in JACOB FRANKS & his descendants. Thanks, Jam
Henry Meachum (various spellings) was born 1766 (probably in Virginia), and married Nancy Smith, daughter of Richard and Rebecca Smith of Wake County. Although we believe Henry and Nancy Meachum were, by 1813, living in Anson County, North Carolina, their son, William Smith Meachum, in that year married Martha Winfree in Wake County (witness Clerk of Court B. L. King and surety John Smith of Wake County). In Wake County Superior Court, in 1793, Henry Meachum apprenticed our ancestor, Nathaniel Meachum/(later Mitchum), an orphan of 13 years of age. In 1798, Nataniel "Mechum" witnessed an Anson County deed from Charles West to Henry "Mechum" (along with Buckner Nance, a son-in-law of Charles West). By 1801, Nathaniel Mitchum, in nearby Lincoln County, married Jemima Reynolds and raised a family of 13 children before he died there in 1838. For many years, we have sought identity of the parents of Henry Meachum, born 1766, died (also in Anson County) in 1836, suspecting parents of Henry, 1766-1836, could be the same as parents of Nathaniel, 1780-1838, or could lead us to knowledge of parents of Nathaniel, 1780-1838. A 1793 Wake County Tax List shows Henry Meachum owned 100 acres of Wake County land, and that Richard Smith (whose listing appears immediately below that of Henry Meachum) also owned 100 acres of Wake County real property; however, we have been unable to ascertain when, or to whom, either Henry Meachum or Richard Smith sold or otherwise disposed of this land. At the time B. L. King was Clerk of Wake County Superior Court (when William Smith Meachum was married there in February 1813), there was a Justice of that Court named Richard Smith; however, we have been unable to determine if this Richard Smith was the same Richard Smith as was father of Nancy Smith who was married to Henry Meachum, above. [Father of William Smith Meachum, husband of Martha Winfree, daughter of Charles and Anney (Anna) Winfree, presumably, in 1813, residents of Wake County.] Any insight -- or leads -- into the backgrounds of any of these three family genealogies will help to solve a mystery of long standing. Thank you. Alta Mitchem Durden - [email protected]
Hello List, I wanted to let you all know that I've put up a new link on the Chatham Co. page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncchatha/chatham.htm On it, there is a link to 'Cemeteries Moved when Jordan Lake was built' (sorry, long name) But, this is a listing of all the cemeteries that the Corps of Engineers moved when B. Everett Jordan Lake was formed. The area covered what is now parts of Chatham, Durham and Wake Counties. Some of the cemeteries have names and some do not. If you know of your families that were buried in any of the 'unknown' cemeteries, Please contact me! Perhaps you can help us discover who or what the cemetery was originally called and 'name' them. I have the previous location and where the graves were moved to and how many graves. There will be a listing of the names of the people re-interred, eventually. I'm working on those, now. Please look, and see if anything rings a bell, with your familiy names and places. Thanks, Sue Ashby CC, Chatham Co.
I have been researching the Pollards of Wake and Johnston Co, NC for 10 years and I have found NC to be one of the most helpful and generous states in giving information to genealogists. I have only dealt with about 6 of the counties, but each one has bent over backwards to help me. My biggiest suggestion is to try and get whatever you can at the county level. It is cheaper and the people are so nice and easy to deal with. The NC State Archives charges quite alot for research and getting copies of documents. I had started about 1 1/2 years ago doing research in Maryland. When I called the MD State Archives to find out what was available and the cost and told them how generous NC is with their information, she politely told me "Honey, don't even think your going to get that kind of help from Maryland." Other fellow genealogists have told me that it is amazing what NC has given me. I just want to thank the state of NC and everyone there who has ever helped me with finding my Pollard roots in that state. It has been greatly appreciated. Last year I went there for a week (I hadn't been there since I was a teenager) and the residents were just as nice about giving directions, information on former residents, etc. HURRAY FOR NORTH CAROLINA!!!
