Gerald, I don't really have much more information other than what I provided, I have a Margaret A. GRIFFIN dau. of John GRIFFIN b. 1810 NC and Nepsy Brigman b. 1812 NC. On the 1850 Union Co. NC census the Margaret A. b. c. 1843 is living in dwelling 676 with parents, brothers William S. b. 28 Jun 1831 Union Co. NC, John b. 1837, Lee b. 1839, James Pleasant b. 1841, and sisters Sarah "Sally" GRIFFIN MATTOX b. 14 Nov 1833 Union Co. NC, Molsy E. b. 1845, Ella M. b. 1847, Mary I. b. 1849 and Elizabeth L. b. 1853. On the 1860 Union Co. census Margaret Adeline is listed as a spinstress, her brothers are no longer living at home, the sisters with the exception of Sarah are still at home living in dwelling 63 Lane's Creek. On the 1870 Union Co. census the family is living in Monroe dwelling 214, Margaret is not living with the family only John, Nepsy, Ella, and Mary. Her brother James Pleasant GRIFFIN can be found in dwelling 212 with his family - wife Elizabeth (VINCENT/VINSON/STACKS ??). I know that William S. and Sarah "Sally" Griffin MATTOX moved to Tishomingo Co. MS and can be found there on the 1860 census. As well as William S. GRIFFIN's brother in law Wilson PARKER. James Pleasant GRIFFIN moved his family to Weakley Co. TN via MS along with a STACKS family. I have been trying to find what happened to the rest of this GRIFFIN family but can't seem to find any Union Co. connections. Hi Dawn, John and Gerald, It looks like you three are searching the same family. John and I corresponded about Maggie Griffin married to Harmon D. King back in May 1999. John has Maggie's birth date as 1845 and her death date as 1930. Gerald's data from the 1870 census shows a Margaret as 22 which would make her birth date 1848. I have a Margaret A. GRIFFIN born c. 1843 in Union Co. NC, the daughter of John GRIFFIN and Nepsy Brigman who can be found living on the 1850 Union Co. NC census page 46 dwelling 676 at that time Sep 1850 she was 7 years old. John thought my Margaret was Maggie, he has pictures of her from a 1929 King family reunion. She is buried at Corinth Baptist Church in Union Co. (where the picture was taken). I'm unfamiliar with the Church or Union Co. at the time of the census my GRIFFIN family was living in the Lane's Creek area. Is that near Corinth Baptist Church? I guess my answer Dawn is I don't know, but I sure hope to find my Elizabeth someday. Just found this Anson Co, NC item for sale on ebay. There's only about 6 hours left in the auction. Check it out: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=285501785 "This Confederate States of America CSA identification tag is dated 1862. It belonged to PVT S. DUNN, CO D, 24 NC. It also says ANSON CO, CSA 1862. This authentic tag is rare indeed and will make a nice addition for those of you who collect rare and unusual items. Just holding this tag gives you a strange sense of history... If only it could talk...." If you're not familiar with ebay, just use the helpful buttons at the top of the auction page for instructions. I'm sending this to the Stanly Co list, the Union Co list and the Anson Co list as well because I think the Dunn's were in all three counties and probably more. Good luck! Julie

Good Day everyone. I'm hoping someone can help me tap into my STRAWN roots. My grandmothers maiden name was Ruby Flora STRAWN (b.1907). She married Walter S. TURNER in Stanly County N.C. Her father was Marshall STRAWN (b.1863) who was married to Betty Rebecca HARRELL. I believe they were both from Union County, N.C. Marshall STRAWN was also married to Francis HASTY. The parents of Marshall were Lewis STRAWN (1830-1905) and Jane TREADWAY (1836-1900). This is where my information ends. Does anyone out there have any information on these folks. If you could help me, I would appreciate it very much. I can be reached at: [email protected] Thanks much, Michael Turner

Just guessing, but I'd say there may well be a Belk daughter who married into the King family, but I haven't seen the connection. The George W.Belk King name makes me suspect you might find a connection in the Thomas Milburn Belk family line, because they gave their families more than two given names....I don't have all the lines, but will check what I have...however, I have only one King not in that line...my Kings are in Ireland, and prob. in MD...very early. Hi all: I have an interesting pattern vaguely beginning to unfold here... Seems like a bit of a Coinsidence or (?) as type of connection. Although I have James G. KING as an ancestor (Union Co., NC), with a Benjamin Franklin KING (aka Frank or B.F.) George W(?) Belk KING as his son (so far no way to know how or where the BELK connections comes in) -- Am assuming there is some sort of connection. BF in listed on the 1900 Cenus in Union Co., NC; in the Lake Co., FL 1910 Census as a Farm Foreman and then is back to Union Co., NC. by 1920. George W. was born in Union Co., served in the WW I and settled in Carbarrus Co., and died there. George had his father living with him the last four years of his life (according to an Obit) and buried in Union Co. Question: Is there a chance there was a BELK Farm in Lake Co., FL during that period? If there was, perhaps it would confirm (for me), the closeness of the connection of the KING, BELK and even the HELM line. Just trying to build a tighter case of proof and connection. Dawn Hines, J :

I believe the book you are refering to is: "The Doster Genealogy" by Mrs. Ben Hill Doster (In memory of her husband--completed, edited and produced by Wadsworth Doster): copyright 1945 by Wadsworth Doster, 50 Vanderbilt Ave., New York, NY. Published by The William Byrd Press, Inc., Richmond, Virginia. You may be able to borrow a copy through the interlibrary loan. Thank you, I have found that the Leggetts were so prolific that I'll have to work with several other family names in order to sort out and establish the correct relationships. I've only seen the abstract, and would like to see it in entirity. Doris Researching in NC/SC: BIBBY, BELK, LEGGETT, BEAM, HILL, MARR, JACKSON, COX, DUREN, ALLEN, WOOD, MEADOR, MOBLEY. If you have not seen the Will of Sampson Doster - 1852 from Union County it can be found at the following URL on RootsWeb: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/union/wills/sampso03.txt This will talks about the children of "my daughter Polly Helms" and goes on to name six children. It also does not name which Helms male Polly married, but it does list her as being deceased. I'd very much like to have a copy of this. Please send to [email protected] This would have to be John Montgomery Belk who was a doctor, left his practice and joined his brother Henry in the business. Right? There's a big thick book of Doster genealogy at the Monroe NC library....I think it may be fairly recent. I really didn't get to spend as much time there as I wanted to, but I suppose that's never going to happen. We'll just have to go back to NC when we can spend more time -- maybe start in Raleigh and work our way down? I think you are probably correct--that the brother of Sampson Doster had a dau. named Polly who may have married a Helms.... I have Hannah Doster, dau of Sampson Doster& Mary Agness Laney, m. 1812 Darling Belk Jr., who is the son of Darling Belk Sr & Agnes Nelson. [his first w. (m.1807) was Sarah Brown]. I also have a Tressa (?) Doster who m. George Washington Lafayette Belk abt 1870ish. Darling Belk Jr. and Hannah Doster had a dau Polly, b.1835, who married _____Helms 1855.Their son, Isaac Ambrose Helms,b.1863. Then I have another Polly Belk, b.1793, dau of Darling Belk Sr. and Agnes Nelson...don't have a spouse name for her. Do you have a name here? I also have a Polly ____ who m. Julius A. Belk. could this be a Helms? I have to run out just now, but will try to pick this up when I return this afternoon. If so, this Polly Helms would have been the niece of the elder Polly Helms. So, were there really two Polly Helms? I too would like to know the name of the Helms who married Polly Belk. I chimed in here because of the reference to Sampson Doster. Have been searching a long time for the connection between Sampson Doster and my ancestor, Sampson Dawster (Doster?) Helms, b. 1824. For a long time I felt that he must be a son of one of Sampson Doster's daughters, but that apparently is NOT the case. Oh, well... Gene Helms
