    3. This explains when and why townships in Union County were formed: Reprinted from the Monroe Journal, Oct 23, 1925 Before the formation of regular townships, the affairs of the county were managed by militia districts, there being thirteen of them, each containing one company of soldiers commanded by a captain. Owing to this fact, the districts were known as "captain's beats," and usually took the name of the commanding officer of that particular locality. At central points in the districts voting places were established and election returns made there from in much the same manner as returns are now made from townships. In 1869, after the new constitution of the State was framed, under the Reconstruction Act, surveys were made and the townships of Goose Creek, New Salem, Sandy Ridge, Lane's Creek, Jackson and Buford were laid off and their boundaries defined, in addition to Monroe. In 1879, the township of Vance was formed from portions of Goose Creek and Sandy Ridge, and several years later Marshville township was formed from portions of Lane's Creek and New Salem, being the last township division made up to the present time. Within the boundaries of the regular townships, in some instances, charters have been granted for municipal organizations by the Legislature: Waxhaw, in Jackson; Wingate, lying in Monroe and Marshville; Unionville, in Goose Creek; Indian Trail, in Vance; and Marshville, in the township bearing the same name. 2. Hello List, I have read that in 1842 Union Co, NC was created from Mecklenburg & Anson Counties. Question: Can someone give me a general description of what parts were taken from each county to create Union Co? 1850 Union Co census question: Several pages 55-80 (Collins surname) that I have looked at have no Township listed. Can anyone tell me what area of Union Co "no Township" might have been in for the 1850 census? Any information will be greatly appreciated. I am researching the James Collins family listed in the 1850 Union Co census. Thanks, Maggie

    3. Angie (and group), This is the reason I was embarrassed that the material went to the list instead of just to Ken Eason -- I was passing on information I had received from two super guys compiling data for the Helms group -- guess you all know them well: Gerald Helms (in NC) and William Helms (in SC) for Ken to comment on, and the rest is . . . . Regarding the sources you'd like for the Wm Kelly Philemon etc. I can't help you -- the only thing I have is what I was sharing with Ken (yep, a broken record). I haven't seen any Pare or Parr surnamed people -- yet. (I did check my stuff though.) I'll keep my eyes out for them. Since I'm rambling on, I'd love to ask you all about a name I have been having loads of trouble with RENA with no last name, born abt 1824 and one of my ancestors who married in to the STEGALLS. She was the first wife of Burton Culpepper Stegall (b. 1820 NC). It just dawned on me, thanks to these HANEY emails, that Ken Flowe told me that one of their children was named: Albert HANEY Stegall B: Abt 1844 ,Union County,North Carolina D: M: 15 Feb 1885 ,Brunswick County,North Carolina to Frances A Gause ****Could this be the clue I need for RENA's maiden name? That she was a HANEY?? And does any one know if Rena is a nickname too? Hope you all are more helpful than I was. Sorry Angie!! Hope your email will stimulate an answer for you. 3. Kay, Dont feel you are by yourself. I wrote a memo not too long ago when I first went on to mailing lists. Somehow and I still dont know why, I wrote a memo which I checked and it had the correct address, then sometime between then and the actual sending a mail listing address got appended to the "TO:". Boy did I get a thrashing. I considered it rude and inapproprite as I had appoligized for it and tried to explain what had happened. To those that yelled the loudest I sent a personal appology and just as I thought I was going good at getting everything back tonormal, the list administrator returned from a week off to a seminor or something and before checking all her mail, she ran across the mistake and let me have it again. There are a lot of inconsiderate people in this world and they will show their ugly heads. I appoligized for not being perfect and not making errors. One person wrote who was on my side and said the people who never made errors had never done enough to do any good. So keep in there if there is a barrage and just consider the source. Happy genealogy to you and have fun. (I wonder what it feels like to be perfect????) Ray Mack Camarillo, CA ----- Original Message ----- From: "K.
