William, For Union county my surnames (along with some first names) are WOLFE (Philip, Henry, Adam, Mary Clementine), KRAUSS (William Henry, Mary Louisa), TAYLOR (Henry Francis), VINCENT (Martha), DOSTER (Pamela), FILES (Elizabeth). To the list. I have recently completed and uploaded a web page that contains the contents of the diary of John Osborn. This diary was written from 1800 to 1802 by John while living in the area of Monroe, NC. This diary is the only volume, number 6, that has survived and was originally transcribed from the original into a typed form by Clara Laney. However, this form was continuous in nature and very difficult to search. I have changed the format by making each day a separate paragraph, but kept the grammar and misspelled words that Clara apparently copied from the original and I put all the names of John's neighbors and other people he interacted with in a bold type. A link is provided so by clicking on the page number you will be taken to that lot of 10 pages. Links are provided at the bottom of each lot of 10 pages, so you can quickly go to the next lot of 10 pages, the previous 10 pages or to the index. The index contains the names of the people and the page where they occur. However, since the diary is 112 type written pages, I have provided the pages in lots of 10 pages. So you will have to use the find feature in your browser to find the person you want after you have been directed to the lot of 10 pages. The size of each package of 10 pages is around 40K so the download time will not be too long. At the end of the diary is an impression written by D. L. McWhorter in 1955. You might find the document interesting as it contains the names and sometimes the entire family of John's neighbors. It also gives you a little insight into the daily lives of our ancestors that lived in the area. The URL for the diary is: http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~helmsnc/osborndiary/ If you find any problems with the web site please let me know so I can correct them. Norma, Thanks so much. This is great. I found a reference to Camp Meeting (Methodist Sacrament) on Aug 1st of one of the years. John did not appear to care for the methodists too much though! When I walked to Philip Wolfe's grave my wife's grandfather, Charles Winchester was with me. He pointed out to me where the saw mill used to be as you can see some of it still in the ground there. He also mentioned that his cousin lived at the house there which at one time used to be Charles' uncle's residence. I believe the house was rebuilt but that the barns, etc... were original. Is this cousin Plato and is this where he lives? We took the woods to enter Steeple Chase but walked out on the road that leads to the entrance near to where the saw mill used to be. You would be interested to know that Charles had two copies of an old picture of the school house that very day at Camp Meeting so he could show me where the school used to stand. Charles also attended the school. William D. It's so neat to hear someone on the internet describe a place that is just a half of a mile through the woods from my house. The Steeple Chase entrance was built on the site that used to be Plato's sawmill. The sawmill was small with only only a roof and a back wall to shelter it from the elements. My father used that sawmill to saw logs from our farm into boards. Those boards were used to build the houses for my sisters' houses, my parents' house, and my own house. I used to marvel at how such a small sawmill could put out so many boards in such a short amount of time. There is something else about the name Winchester that might interest you. Thirty-one years ago, I was a first grader at Mineral Springs Elementary. That school was torn down, when I completed the sixth grade there. Plato was the maintenance worker there at that time. Because my Mom left early for work, we were dropped off early at school. I can remember Plato letting me help with filling the furnace with coal. He would share the snack that his wife had packed for him that day. Plato also enjoyed riding horses and would sometimes cut through our farm during his ride. I even had the chance to ride with him once. I hope you have the chance to talk to Plato. He is one of the nicest people you could ever meet or talk to. He may have the answer to many of your questions. Good Luck, T. McRorie

Thanks for the reply, I will definitely contact Plato. As far as we know the Winchesters are only on my wife's line, hopefully!, however cousins of ours (such as Mary Wolfe and Wm Winchester as well as Wolfes and Howies) have married in the past. Camp Meeting was great this year as always. Philip Wolfe's grave is actually behind Krauswood, which was part of the land he purchased from King George III. It is called Krauswood due to my 2nd great grandfather William Henry Kraus acquiring through his marriage to Mary Clementine Wolfe (2nd great grandmother). His grave, and that of his wife (Elizabeth Files) as well as several unmarked graves is now part of the Steeple Chase property (horse farm) which was once part of Krauswood. William D. Since you replied yes to all my questions I found your Mary Polly Wolfe Winchester! She is buried at Camp Meeting (Pleasant Grove, Mineral Springs, NC) beside her husband and her children. She did pass away in 1856. Most of her tomb stone was knocked over and disintegrated however her footstone read M W 1856. William's tomb stone was fine. What clued me in was that the tomb stones of their children always said for example "Sarah, daughter of Wm and Mary Winchester. I knew this had to be your Mary based on that and the fact that her grave was right beside Wm's and the footstone read M W 1856. I photographed all the tombstones/footstones for you. In addition I found and photographed Adam F. Wolfe's grave and Philip Wolfe's grave (my 3rd and 5th great grandfathers respectively). Adam was Mary's brother, Philip is her grandfather. I will send you copies of all photographs once I have them developed so please send me your address. I plan on photographing Henry Wolfe's grave Pamela Doster's (my great, great grandparents) and others when I return in October as I did not have time to go into Monroe proper on this trip. In closing I thought you would find it interesting that you are not only a cousin of mine but you are also a cousin of my wife, as her mother is a Winchester and is related to Wm Winchester.
