    1. [NCUNION] WILLIAMS, PHILLIPS, HELMS
    2. HiYa ALL: It's been a while since I posted to this list ... I have a Rebecca Phillips mother of Alonzo Theodore Phillips b May 25, 1855 Union Co NC who died April 12, 1940 Burke Co NC married Martha Elizabeth "Lizzie" WINTERS December 11, 1879 Upper Creek Burke Co NC. My problem is rather complicated, I understand that Rebecca may had been married to a WILLIAMS and Alonzo took his mother's maiden name PHILLIPS due to an abusive father. On the marriage license of Martha and Alonzo there is a James WILLIAMS who was a witness. It is further stated that Rebecca married a HELMS and moved to Glen Alpine NC. Does anyone know how I can prove any of this ... ? Would there be birth records in Union Co of an Alonzo Theodore WILLIAMS / PHILLIPS? Thank you so very much! Charlene Phillips San Diego Co CA

    3. Hi Mary and other union county subscribers, My Walter Stegall married Cora Alice Stegall according to my papa Roland Tarlton, Sr. and Ellis mcKinley Stegall's obituary. he died in an auto accident august 25, 1956 When his Pulp wood truck lost control and off a bridge into a creek. Glennie Pope his wife was the daughter of T. Jeff Pope and Martha Rebbecca Liary. I have only been able to document some of the information I have as truth and correct dates but papa seems to be very good on remembering these things. Even done to the Clocktime they died! And he is 79 years old now. I have a Vera Tarlton , who was my Papa Roland Tarlton's sister who married Ray Collins. Do you recognize these names? I have a file that says Griffin Stegall is the father of Walter Stegall but I have not been able to document it also. I live 3 hours away from my home town Monroe, NC. Making it difficult to have access to these records. But I live only 30 miles from Raleigh nc, where I have been to the Nc archives building and have document some of these. My family also holds alot of the surnames of union county also! I was born a Tarlton so it is first on my list then I have Mullis, Stegall, Collins, Simpson, Love Presley, Austin, Knight, Rape, Helms, Purser, mann, Pope, Sells, or Sell, Trull, Flynn, Strawn, Jiers, Mclaurine, Griffin, Blackmond, Little, Cubberson, or Cuthbertson,Smith,Baucom. Anyone recoginize these surnames! Please email me! Thanks! 1. [NCUNION] John M. Smith & James A. Horne
    2. James G. Black
    3. Hi All, I am hoping that someone will know these families. John Miller or Millard Smith was born in Anson Co Oct 10, 1800. After 1842 he is shown in Union Co in Lanes Creek area which I believe to be around Marshville. He married Rebecca Huntley d/o Stephen and Drucilla Rushing Huntley abt. 1825 in Anson Co. Since their last child was born in 1850, I believe that all their children but the last 2 were born in Anson before it was divided. One of their sons ,William Patrick Smith married Elizabeth the d/o James A. and Mary Horne. Elizabeth's brother James Perry Horne married one of John Smith's daughters, Laura Emeline Smith, born March 20, 1835 in Anson Co. James A. Horne was born in 1802 in NC but some of his children were born in Anson Co. Would like to know names of Parents and siblings of James Horne. Also the maiden name of his wife Mary (Rose). John M. Smith was the son of John M Smith who married Phereby Turner. John Jr seems to be the only son from this family. If you have any information about these people I would love to hear from you. Thank you, Jean Black Victoria, TX

    3. Noel, I live in Mint Hill NC and know the historian's name here. She might be able to help you with the Garland's. I remember the Garland's lived on Highway 218 and had a general store but that is about all I can remember. If you want to contact the historian I can give you her name and phone number. She is very nice and loves the history of the town. Let me know if you are interested, Gail FLowe HOneycutt

    3. I hope someone out there is working on the Rowland/Roland line, as I have a question. Did he have 2 wives? Clara Laney's book on Union Co Cemeteries lists his wife as Permelia Griffin. The 1850 census lists his wife as Prudence. Prudence and Permelia are the same age, so I suppose her name could have been Prudence Permelia or the reverse. Does anyone have the answer? chp

    1. Re: [NCUNION] 1790-1920 census soon to be online.
    2. Only 14 counties survived the destruction of the 1890 Census. This country had those records well into the 1930s when someone "accidentally" destroyed them... There were several organizations who tried to save them and keep the destruction from happening and then the unthinkable happened. (BTW, this was all on the History Channel fairly recently) The only reason there were 14 counties surviving, was because they never turned them in ... in this case it was a saver...but under normal conditions those 14 counties would never have been accounted for. To make it even more tragic, the 1890 Census was almost identical to the 1900 Census....Chuck full of genie information. Sigh..... Dawn in AZ

    3. To All: When I was at the Dallas, Texas Public Library recently looking up Texas census', before heading for the Union County, Mecklenberg County census for any Garland family records, I was told the l890 census no longer exist, due to a fire that destroyed the building the census was kept in. Im wondering if that is just the Texas census, or the nationwide census for l890. That would sure be a help, that is where I need to find my grandmother, her name, as I havent found any other record up in Wichita County, Texas, where she and my grandfather lived at the time, Mr. OC Robertson. She died not long after my Mother was born in l895, in Iowa Park, Texas, so Im at a loss. I know that O.C. was born in Maryland, and his second wife, Julia Easley was born in Illinois, which I found in a l9l0 census. My Garland ancestry has been recorded thanks to my newly found cousins, in Matthews, and Mint Hill, North Carolina, and one in Kershaw, SC. We have some Robertsons, or Robersons, (go by both names) there in both Chesterfield, and Mint Hill, NC, during the period from l850 to l870's, also same name as my Maryland Robertson, but not of the same family. Need to know if the l890 census exist anywhere else in the US, or was it only the Texas census.
