I'm researching the Holdens of Union Co. and wondered if anyone was familiar with this family. I have a copy of the petition Sarah Holden filed against the heirs of Samuel Holden (d. 6 May 1848) in order to receive her share of his estate. Sarah was Samuel's widow and was at least his second and possibly his third wife. Holden heirs mentioned in this petition were: Eliza (heir of Alexander Holden), Henry, Frederick, Lily, Lizzy (m. Samuel Moser), Holly (m. William Ferrell/Fernall), Solomon, Nancy, Emeline, Rachel, Sampson, Sally (m. Jacob Earl Bailey), Rebecca and Polly. Eliza was a grandaughter and the rest were children of Samuel. At the time of his death, Samuel owned property "adjoining the lands of Hiram Broom, William Byrum, Phillip Richardson, Jacob Starns and others." A William and Jacob Broom also witnessed the will of Samuel's father (Frederick Holden) in 1814 so the Holden/Broom association spanned quite a few years. Anyone researching this Holden family of Union Co. or has anyone tracking the other names mentioned run across any Holdens in their search? Philip R. Shipp Dallas, TX
Anne, This story gets better with the tellin'. And I don't think I have all the info to straighten it out here. Together, we have more information than we do separately. I don't have the 1870 Census info. Calvin Broom's first wife was Susan Godfrey (Sister of Copeland, John James, Eliza, and Henderson Godfrey). Margaret McNeely's first husband was Copeland, Susan's brother. Then, on the deaths of Susan and Copeland, Margaret and Calvin couldn't stand it any longer, so they got married. And they had seven kids: Cecil R., Hugh, Bunyan Cloyd, Wheeler, Mag, Carrie, and Della. That's a few more than you have listed. I think Cecil was the youngest, because he was living with them in the 1900 Census. He was 16 and Calvin and Margaret were 69 and 59 respectively. Your Mitty Broom must be the Martha "Mattie" Broom. I have her as Susan and Calvin's daughter, Not Margaret's daughter. That's how the book reads. Martha married George Godfrey of My line (James A. Godfrey's GrGrandson). Eliza, James and John are a mystery. But they are common given names in the line. Are you throughly confused? Keep the queries coming, Phil Brown PBrown2438@aol.com
North Carolina birth records started being recorded in 1913, same for death records. Jean

Genoal, Yes, these are the Williams and Cuthbertsons I am researching. I have most of the information on the Williams, but what is your source? The source for the Cuthbertsons? I frequently get informaiton that I can't verify. Some of the Williams information is tied to the 1850-70 Union county census. I have not yet searched the census for the Cuthbertsons. There is some evidence to suggest that Ollin Griffin is either a son or grandson of Thomas Griffin (abt. 1750-1820?) who migrated to N.C. from Virginia. Can anyone help with this possible reationship? For what it is worth, everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE - please check out the website for First Families of America at http://www.linkline.com/personal/xymox/ After accessing the website, scroll down the page to "Fraudulent Lineages." It seems that one "gentleman" by the name of GUSTAVE ANJOU (1863-1942) , wrote genealogy to suit his wealthy clients, thereby throwing a lot of us into bad lines. After you read what he did, you will wish you could send him to his grave all over again, using your bare hands on his neck! This makes it clear why every single "find" we come across, must be checked, double-checked, and checked again, especially if you are passing info on to others! Good luck! Anne
Joy, Twelve Mile Creek is easily located on lots of maps. There is a wonderful 1907 map available for about $4.00 from the Union Co. Gen Society. It is a real masterpieces w/ landmarks, churches, people, etc. It is well worth it. But if you order it, be sure to ask them to mail it in a HARD container . . my copy came in a roll that was smashed in half. Anne I can't add to what you know, but I'll throw in my McNeely great-great grandmother also. I'm looking for Mary Jane McNeely, born 01 July 1834 and died 04 September 1915. She married Daniel W Helms in 1857 and had eight children. I have nothing about Mary's parents or siblings. Maybe if we find one, we'll find both. Anne, According to my transcription of the "Brief History of Waxhaw Baptist Church and the Family of Godfreys", I found Margaret A. McNeely m. to Copeland Godfrey, son of John Clark (Godfrey). Their three children were: 1. Stowe Godfrey m. Henrietta Blythe 2. John Clennie Godfrey m. Minnie Flowers 3. Tobitha Lou Godfrey b. 25 Dec 1857, m. James H. Godfrey, b. 25 Feb 1852, (Son of David C. Godfrey and Parmelia Rape) d. 14 Apr 1930. Tobitha died 20 Dec 1927. a. Tom Godfrey m. Mary Rowell b. Erasasus Godfrey b. oct. 1875, m. Anna Rowell, b. May 1876. 1. Lee Ona Godfrey b. Aug 1899. c. Luther Godfrey d. 6 Sep 1896. d. Ernest C. Godfrey b. Aug 1878, m. Bessie Godfrey, (daughter of Robert Godfrey and Becky King). e. Florence L. Godfrey b. sep 1880, m. John Godfrey, (son of James Richmond Godfrey and Winge Anne Messick). f. Cloyd H. godfrey b. Oct 1882, m. helen Therrell. g. Charles Spurgeon Godfrey b. Aug 1884, m. Eller Robinson, b. Louisiana h. Ezra Bivens Godfrey b. Jul 1886, Union Cty, NC, m. Dovie Murphy. Ezra died 1967. i. Annie Pearl Godfrey b. Jan 1889, m. (1) DeWitt Williford, m. (2) Ben Mullis. j. Lula M. Godfrey b. Mar 1893, Jackson TWP, Union County NC, m. Spurgeon Walters. k. Dan Godfrey. l. Mary Arlie Godfrey b. Jun 1895, m, George Norwood. m.David Crayton Godfrey b. Jan 1897, m. Dora Phifer. This is my transcription of the book. Where I mention the townships or counties born in the above, I've pulled from Census Records in the National Archives. The "Brief History of Waxhaw....." has a lot of informaton, but also opens up a lot of questions. Hope this is of some help. Phil Brown PBrown2438@aol.com
My goodness - hope you've been able to recover the important stuff. We hadn't spoken in a while, I had mentioned the Webster Medlin book to you (i'm descended from Joseph Medlin and Ellen Helms Medlin). david stancil (pstancil@aol.com)
Hi all, I am looking for information on great grandmother MARGARET A.MCNEELY-GODFREY-BROOM. She was born July 28, 1840 and died Kune 17, 1905. She was married first to UNKNOWN GODFREY with 3 children. Second marriage to CALVIN BROOM, second marriage for him also, I would appreciate any information on her parents or siblings, thanks. Anne
Joy, Twelve mile creek is in the SW corner of Union Co, near Waxhaw. It stretches from the Catawba River in Lancaster Co, SC to close to present-day Wesley Chapel and Mineral Springs. Something you may want if you don't have it already, is the 1907 Union Co Tax map for sale throught the Heritage Room. Although the date of 1907 is later than you're probably interested in, it would still be beneficial because it shows the old creeks and rivers, churches, schools, towns, gold mines AND the landowners in 1907!! I have noticed that many of the families stayed in the same areas through the years. The map measures approx. 22" x 24" and is suitable for framing. I have one framed and then one dry- mounted that I use for research to make notes on. If you're interested in ordering a map: 1907 TAX MAP OF UNION COUNTY $3.12 ($2.12 plus $1 P & H) ORDER FROM: THE HERITAGE ROOM, PO BOX 397, MONROE, NC 28111 For a list of other books and items for sale pertaining to Union Co., go to the site for the Heritage Room - Books for Sale: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncunion/sale_list.htm Good luck!
