Sandra, one of my grandmother was Cornelia Alice Hamilton WATTS. One of her sisters, Bessie Pearl HAMILTON (d/o Wm HAMILTON and Louisa Flora BIVENS) married Carl Millen Tucker. Don't know much about his ancestry, but Millen is not a very common name, and I'll bet there is a connection. Do you know of one? By the way, I am in Mt Pleasant, SC just outside of Charleston, but my roots are definitely in Anson/Union and Chesterfield Counties. I have a few Helms connections along with everyone else, as well as a few of your Secrests, Trulls, Parrots, Rogers, and lots of Williams. Those are just my connections from the list you posted. My list of families goes on and on. I am convinced that everyone who has roots in Union Co is related. chp > >I live in Union County on land that my ancestors bought in 1811. I live in Maryland, was born in Horry County, SC, but grew up in Mebane, NC and graduated from college in Red Springs, NC. Both my parents were from Mecklenburg and Union Counties. My father, MEDLIN, was born and raised in Mint Hill/Monroe/Goose Creek. We have researched all of our family lines from there, except that of my mother's side - WILLIAMS - which is very hard to do. I have some data, but have yet to get into the DUNCAN, CROWELL (I have received extensive data but have not gotten through it all as yet), BIVENS (also received lots of data), and KISIAH families yet. I have visited Monroe twice for delving into records and have been helped so much by THE HERITAGE ROOM. The Monroe Public Library also has lots of books on families and genealogical data. Everyone there is so helpful and nice. Other family lines are: CUTHBERTSON, BROOM, RUSSELL, GINGLES, MORRISON, SIMPSON, BENTON, CONDER, ORR, GRIFFIN, HELMS, SECREST, PRESLAR/PRESSLEY, TRULL, WHITLEY, DEBERRY, and WISE. I don't live in Union County, although I did travel through there once. My ancestors, the Bakers and Lowthorpes left the Lanes Creek area of Union/Anson County by about 1870 and most moved to Tennessee. Having a devil of a time unraveling all that went on the first few years after the WAR. People disappeared. Land changed hands without records. Folks must have died and no records of when nor where, but I keep asking and searching and many of you have been incredibly generous with your time and information. BTW, I've chosen to live in Huntsville, Alabama after a military career which had me living in or temporarily "visiting" 47 of the 50 states and territories and 18 or so foreign countries. db
I am looking for someone who lives in Monroe to go to the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery and tell me if there are Civil War markers on the graves of James G. King and Harmon B. King (I'm not sure that Harmon B. is buried there?? or even when he died...wonder if it was 1874). I would like to have markers placed, if they are not already. Thank you, to whomever can do this. BTW, one of my new cousin said that my gg grandfather's middle name was Gassaway...anyone ever hear of that name??? I was led to believe it was George...??? Again, thank you for any replies.... dawn in soon to be warm AZ..
grew up in union county, presently live in mecklenburg county jerald long
You probably haven't looked hard enough. I find that hard to believe. ha ha ha Joy

Just wondered if any of you Helms descendants would be interested in knowing that there is a "Helms Haven" here in Union County. Mr. Helms, also a Laney descendant, has made two cabins into museums. One cabin came from land owned by Andrew Jackson, Sr. Some of the Laney family lived there at one time. The family has done a GREAT job with this. They have one set up as it would have been back in the "olden" days, the other with everything imaginable displayed. This has been one of the most interesting things we have seen since we moved here from Tennessee in June of '98. The Helms family is very gracious. Mr. Helms showed us around, telling the history of the buildings, how he and his family restored them, they made the feather bed on the old bedstead, some of the clothes displayed were his mothers, etc. There was more than could be seen and appreciated in the short time we had to visit. We could have easily spent the day there. Hope this was of some interest to someone, it certainly was to us!

Hey, if you really want to dig deep, we can give you a Helms & Starnes connection. We're dotted with Helms through marriages, and linked to the Starnes on my grandmother Eason's side (Hattie Watkins Eason's daughter-in-law) Her (grandma's) mother was a Gordon who married a Cook, her parents were Joanna Starnes & Davis Gordon (they were also Plummer Gordon's parents; he was married to Connie Watkins) Joanna's parents were Andrew & Elizabeth Starnes (Elizabeth was a Hemby previous). Valerie; You're not the only one without a Helms connection. I live in Union County, all of mine and my wife's families are from Union County, but we have yet to find a Helms or Starnes connection. Believe it or not. There are several people on the list who live in Union County, but I think the majority do live outside the county. Randy Godfrey > I live in Union County...probably the only here without a HELMS connection! > LOL > > Valerie >
I live in Charlotte, about five miles north of Union County on Highway 16 (Providence Rd.) I'm descended from the Gordons and Funderburks (Funderburghs) of Union County (NC) and Lancaster County (SC). My second great-grandfather was James C. Gordon. He was the general contractor for many of the historic buildings in Waxhaw and the surrounding county. -----Original Message----- From: Mr. Make Believe <Demon_@webtv.net> To: NCUNION-L@rootsweb.com <NCUNION-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, May 03, 1999 3:47 PM Subject: [NCUNION-L] local residents how many people on this mailing list actually live in Union County???
