    1. Killer John and other Galloway/McCall problems

    3. Merrily we are transcribing the 1870 census (Eastatoe, Hogback & Gloucester - be patient, it's coming). Found a Henry Galloway age 20 married to an Amarilis age 24 in Eastatoe. No youngins yet, but there is a 72 year old named "Killer John". Mr. Duckworth had amazingly good handwriting for a census taker, so I'm positive this is the name as written - wouldn't you love to know that story. Admittedly, Mr Duckworth is putting last name first, so it could be Jonathan Killer. This looks like the Henrey B. Galloway in Monteith's 1880 transcription living in# 48 Hogback with wife M.M. and an 87 year old man listed as a Father in law "John Callor" whose parents were born in outer space (okay, there are just question marks). Also kind of similar to a H.B. Galloway on Judy's Magic Gedcom who was son of Wm. D Galloway & Sarah Morgan and married M.M. McCall dtr of John McCall & Elizabeth Glazener. John is old enough to be Killer John, but he can't be since he is peacefully married to Elizabeth at the time. To make matters worse, Those of you from the Galloway list will remember the "full blood" Cherokee, Pelina Galloway, who married a McCall. Got more info. Pelina is, by oral tradition, the daughter of a Henry Galloway and an "Elvina" and is the first member of her family to be born here, "off the reservation". I tracked her down - she is really Lydia Pelina Galloway who married Thomas McCall, son of John McCall Jr. Now, in 1880 John Jr does have an Elv Galloway age 18, and in 1900 Henrey B. Galloway is living next door to Pelina & Thomas McCall, they even named a son after him, and all seems well Except that Lydia's Parents, according to her death certificate are George Calor Galloway & Julia Ann P. Bryant. Mind you, their family Bible has two versions of kids. The first lists an infant that died after 4 days, and no Pelina. The second, a page stuck in, skips the infant, and lists Lida P. Galloway as their daughter. Of course, Pelina and Thomas never named any of their kids George or Julia. Yep - I'm headed for the excedrin, too.
