Phillip Elizabeth Jane Owen is my Great Great Grandmother. She was born February 13,1846 and died April 12,1884.She was married to William Jackson Owen.He was the son of James Owen, who was the brother of Jesse Owen. There is a mountain story to the effect that he sneaked her out of the house when she was only about fourteen and took her to the mountains of Georgia. We have recently found them in the 1870 Towns county Georgia census. They have been really hard to track, almost as if they deliberately kept a low profile. We have been able to begin putting some substance to their lives. We know that they had at least nine children,William Sherman[my great grandfather],Samuel,Clelan,Akin,Vance,Hassie,Sarah, and twins Albert and Alice. However in the 1870 census they appear to have two children which we did not know about,Jeremiah and Margaret. We know that she cooked a baked possum and sweet potato dish that was so delicious that it was considered a special Sunday treat.Every Sunday she would send the boys out to get as fat a possum as they could find.Apparently as it slowly baked the fat and the sweet potato would blend together and create an unbelievable aroma and taste.[Just writing this is starting to make my mouth water.] We also know that they owned an old Grandfather clock, which is still in one of my cousins possession today. There is strange but true story about the clock. When William Jackson was dying[he was kicked by a cow that he had lost his temper and was kicking],my Great Grandmother Sarah Elizabeth[William Sherman's wife]was sitting up wiith him.As soon as he took his last gasping breath she looked at the clock to see what time it was and at that very moment the clock stopped. The clock passed on to Sarah E,but they could not get it to work for a long time. They did eventually get it to run and Sarah E brought it with her when the family moved to Texas.Sarah E died January 26,1962 in Dallas Texas at the age of 94.Her daughters were with her when she died and when they looked at the clock it had stopped running at the exact time she died.Strange but definately true.I will keep you posted if I learn any thing else about Elizabeth Jane.
