Hi List Members, Just got home last night after a very hectic week in NC/SC. Linda Raxter, Alex and I spent most of Monday tramping over hills and trespassing, looking for another Owen cemetery. We probably spent about an hour looking for it without success, but we found a wonderful old log cabin in unbelievably good shape. We were sure that we had found one of the original Owen cabins that had been overlooked, but unfortunately not. We finally had to enlist the help of my aunt and uncle who live near by and knew where the cemetery was. The owner of the property wasn't home but her son was. Luckily, my aunt and cousin came with us to show us where it was and knew him. The son treated us to an informative and very lengthy dissertation on the government, the Sierra Club, Yankees, tourists and trespassers. Linda had wisely suggested that we take her car, otherwise I do believe we might have met with some not-so-hospitable actions if we had driven my car with Michigan plates. When we found the cemetery I was very pleasantly surprised: my ggfather Alfred Henry Owen & gggparents John B. Owen & Malinda Reid were buried there. Alfred Henry Owen isn't buried with his wife Elizabeth Caroline Wood, but with one of his other ladies. According to my uncle, he left his Elizabeth, his legitimate wife, and went on to father 26 children by various women. I imagine that's one of the reasons I'm related to so many of the Owen researchers. Now I need to round up a whole bunch more kids and names of mothers. Can anyone give me a hand with this? We also got some information from my aunt, whose grandmother was an Owen (her and my uncle are of course distant cousins). It was written about 25 years ago by one of her Hall relatives. I don't know what the sources of this person's research were, but here is a little of what is in it: John Owen who married Lavinia Parker (we think), she has the name as John W. Owen. Neither Linda or I could remember seeing a middle initial for this John. She has him marrying a Mary Parker (could it have been Mary Lavinia or Lavinia Mary?) AND being married to a Leviney (no last name). Or was the Mary Frances Blackburn that John married later on actually a Parker? hmmm. Anyone have any insight on this? This John (W.) Owen's father is listed as John Owen and according to this paper, he came to the present Transylvania Co. from Wales and was of Irish descent. No wife is listed for him. More food for thought. The people who wrote this paper is still living in Rosman, it would certainly be interesting to talk with them and see what their sources were. I also got one of my fantasies fulfilled: I got to the "Queen" for the day on Monday. Little Alexandra had evidently had a wonderful dream the night before and had woke up that morning thinking she and her mother were going to have lunch with a Queen! So I was the "Queen for the Day" <G>. Shawna
