Well I'm gald you enjoyed the fact that we almost got shot. I swear I thought I was kidding when I told Shawna we should take my car because her's had Michigan plates. Shawna failed to mention the details of the location of the little log cabin (yes it was a historical structure, moved from down the road - proabably still Owen, though not the Owen we were hoped had lived there). It was down a four wheel drive road that I took my little corolla down - Past the SHOOTING RANGE in EXCELLENT CONDITION. After we got Aunt Bobbie, Aunt had enough sense to check in the little house that was closer to the cemetery than we had realized where we were told the tale of the Caddie with Florida plates that showed up looking for the cemetery because it was listed as a "Historic Site". Thank heavens we had taken my car!!! Also managed to get a few chiggers while looking for the cemetery - before Aunt Bobbie. Alex insisted on blackberries while we tromped throught the woods. Couldn't make "Queen Shawna" pick them, now could I? When I get the cemetery posted and have the comment "Access heavily restricted" just trust me on that one, okay. At least we didn't find any snakes. -- Linda Hoxit Raxter lraxter@citcom.net See Indexed Western North Carolina Cemetery Surveys http://www.geocities.com/~alextreehouse related to at least half the county - at least once ; )
Evening Fellow Rooters, In my database, I have a Jerdie Galloway, daughter of William H. Galloway (1858-1932), who married an Owen, but I don't have his first name or any information on Jerdie. Any help here? Also need the first name and data on an Owen who married a Martha Hoxit (1883-1964). Many Thanks, Philip Sheppard
Hi List Members, Just got home last night after a very hectic week in NC/SC. Linda Raxter, Alex and I spent most of Monday tramping over hills and trespassing, looking for another Owen cemetery. We probably spent about an hour looking for it without success, but we found a wonderful old log cabin in unbelievably good shape. We were sure that we had found one of the original Owen cabins that had been overlooked, but unfortunately not. We finally had to enlist the help of my aunt and uncle who live near by and knew where the cemetery was. The owner of the property wasn't home but her son was. Luckily, my aunt and cousin came with us to show us where it was and knew him. The son treated us to an informative and very lengthy dissertation on the government, the Sierra Club, Yankees, tourists and trespassers. Linda had wisely suggested that we take her car, otherwise I do believe we might have met with some not-so-hospitable actions if we had driven my car with Michigan plates. When we found the cemetery I was very pleasantly surprised: my ggfather Alfred Henry Owen & gggparents John B. Owen & Malinda Reid were buried there. Alfred Henry Owen isn't buried with his wife Elizabeth Caroline Wood, but with one of his other ladies. According to my uncle, he left his Elizabeth, his legitimate wife, and went on to father 26 children by various women. I imagine that's one of the reasons I'm related to so many of the Owen researchers. Now I need to round up a whole bunch more kids and names of mothers. Can anyone give me a hand with this? We also got some information from my aunt, whose grandmother was an Owen (her and my uncle are of course distant cousins). It was written about 25 years ago by one of her Hall relatives. I don't know what the sources of this person's research were, but here is a little of what is in it: John Owen who married Lavinia Parker (we think), she has the name as John W. Owen. Neither Linda or I could remember seeing a middle initial for this John. She has him marrying a Mary Parker (could it have been Mary Lavinia or Lavinia Mary?) AND being married to a Leviney (no last name). Or was the Mary Frances Blackburn that John married later on actually a Parker? hmmm. Anyone have any insight on this? This John (W.) Owen's father is listed as John Owen and according to this paper, he came to the present Transylvania Co. from Wales and was of Irish descent. No wife is listed for him. More food for thought. The people who wrote this paper is still living in Rosman, it would certainly be interesting to talk with them and see what their sources were. I also got one of my fantasies fulfilled: I got to the "Queen" for the day on Monday. Little Alexandra had evidently had a wonderful dream the night before and had woke up that morning thinking she and her mother were going to have lunch with a Queen! So I was the "Queen for the Day" <G>. Shawna
The Ruth Bump Glazener Research Notebook at the Historic Properties Commission Archives is 332 pages long (with my new Table of Contents). At 15 cents a copy - it gets pretty expensive. So I cashed in my brownie points and gained permission to sneak it out just long enough to take it to a cheaper copier machine. That's a lot of brownie points. Lots of Glazeners with lots of transcribed documents. And since the early families were so friendly, there are lots of Gillespies, McCalls, Kitchens, Whitmires, etc. Ruth did her research in the 1960s & 70s - Before computers so it's not the best organized collection since she kept sticking in more pages. Certainly not coffee table material, but for obsessive genealogists it's perfect. I don't know if she was planning to publish a book or not. Archives apparently inherited all of her research. They have this copy of her "Glazener Notebook" as well as personal Glazener correspondence and little notes if you ever get a chance to visit. Whatever her intention, I don't think it was to lie forgotten in a file cabinet - though it is a better fate than forgotten in an attic. If anyone would like a copy - I can do it cheaper than they can. 10 cents a copy, sales tax since I live here, a box and postage come to $39.20. Just mail to Linda Raxter, PO Box 418, Rosman, NC 28772. I'll pack up my copy and head to the cheap copy machine next weekend. And if you have other ancestors in the county, I am working on sorting out all those files so they will be more user friendly for folks visiting from out of town with only a couple of hours to complete their research. I hope to eventually get things straightened out to where you can mail order copies of the files you need direct from Archives. This will take a lot of sorting. -- Linda Hoxit Raxter lraxter@citcom.net See Indexed Western North Carolina Cemetery Surveys http://www.geocities.com/~alextreehouse related to at least half the county - at least once ; )
In my continuing effort to determine how many times I'm related to myself, I discovered another Patterson Connection. I had kind of been expecting it given the geography and time period. Anyway - Millie Ann Patterson b. 27MAY1825 d. 19APR1907 married Abraham Powell b. 1823 d 01JAN1893. They had a son named Van Buren Powell from whom I am descended. Anyway, now I need their Parents. Particularly wondering about Millie Ann - was she the daughter of West Patterson, His "Mythical" brother Asa, or the Asa in the next generation who is probably one of their sons, or another male Patterson sent to confuse me? Pattersons are particularly difficult to sort out. If anyone has Abraham's parents, I would also appreciate it if you would grab them and send them to me. Abraham, the younger Asa, and Van Buren are all buried at Old Toxaway - upper. Millie Ann seems to be in Oak Point Cemetery in Cowlitz Colorado where several of her children moved. This might explain the empty space next to Abraham. -- Linda Hoxit Raxter lraxter@citcom.net See Indexed Western North Carolina Cemetery Surveys http://www.geocities.com/~alextreehouse related to at least half the county - at least once ; )
Everyone I goofed on one of the dates. The Church records show Thomas Owen as being born in 1763,not 1767. Sorry Jerry
Hi fellow listmates I told you I would share with you what my brother Danny found in the LDS records,so here goes. He did not find a lot on the Right family, but did find some interesting stuff on the Owen family.Remember that all LDS material is only as accurate as whoever submits it,so this will give all some exciting info to either prove or disprove. Before I list this stuff let me share with you a decision which we made after this last weekends research.First let me give you a little more background on who I am talking about when I say we.Besides my brother and me we have a real dyed in the wool geneologist on our team. She is our aunt Fredna Merideith, who is my dads sister. She has spent the last 30 years researching the Owen and related families. In her endeavors she has traveled to over 25 different states, including North Carolina amassing a virtual library of info. Some of the other geneologists she has visited with over the years, are Elizabeth Barton,Walter Cox,Jerry Taylor,Vernon Luce,Winnie Kroplenicki,Bonnie Waldier,Lib Tinsly and many others of the older generation. We just last weekend met Lala Stinecipher from Oklahoma who has spent almost 30 years researching Owen and related families.Even aunt Fredna was surprised by the amount of info she has collected. Now that we have that established here is what we have decided. This is strictly a personal decision and we don't expect everyone to see it this way,but that is the great thing about geneology,it is constantly evolving and is always dynamic. We have decided, mostly from some information we have on the Glazner family,to for the present put John Owen Sr on a safe shelf and not forget him[especially if he turns out to be our ancestor]and to accept James Owen and Anna Right as our rightful ancestors. We have many pieces of this puzzle to put together and welcome any input either for or against this. Now for the rest of the story. This is from LDS records, not us so have fun with it. Thomas Owen Born 1767 Elizabeth McCurry Born 1767 Jesse Owen Born 1733 Died 1793 Ann Crawford Born 1740 John Owen Born 1691 Married 1723 Pheobe Brackett Born 1707 Thomas Owen Jr Born 1664 Died 1744 Lucy Wooten Born 1679 Thomas Owen Sr Born 1634 Elizabeth Brooks Born 1665-1706 Mr Owen 1605-1615 Interesting stuff, but time and a lot of research will tell the tale! It's going to take awhile to get the fieldstones sorted out from my notes. But in a nutshell - the place is a mess. This is in Pisgah National Forest on Cemetery Loop Trail, or should I say under it. Yes, the trail goes right through the graves - on top, several stones have been knocked down or lost as a result. That's the main part. The edges where their are only fieldstones that the tourists don't care about are completely overgrown in laurel complete with snakes (king snake I think - we both quickly ran - have I mentioned lately you should take a snake bite kit when visiting old cemeteries.) Anyway - I was pretty much disgusted. The few graves still intact on the edge show that originally the families had placed small mounds over the graves. The majority of these have been eroded away by foot traffic. There are a few markers with names: George Dunn Died 03JUL1886 aged about 67 yr Carter McCall 15JUL1885 10FEB1897 Walter McCall 15OCT1887 20JAN1897 Martha McCall (Wife of Samuel) 27FEB1855 27FEB1892 Robert McCall Sr Mar 1800 Jan 1881 Rachel McCall Jan 1811 Aug 1881 Harriet L. McCall 15JAN1855 18AUG1878 Infant of H.L. McCall aged 1 month This would make a good clean up and restoration project for the WINTER (sleepy snakes). I am going to contact the Forest Service and see if we can move the trail to go AROUND the cemetery. Wish me luck. -- Linda Hoxit Raxter lraxter@citcom.net See Indexed Western North Carolina Cemetery Surveys http://www.geocities.com/~alextreehouse related to at least half the county - at least once ; )

Gary, This is just a thought. On the 1880 Transylvania Co. census there are other Fletchers listed: Alice, age 26, living with Charles C. Lowns family, listed as a servant (cook) Angie, age 17, living with John W. Mills family, listed as a servant Jackson, age 17, living with Jesse W. Gilreath family, listed as brother-in-law (wife's name was Mary L., age 21) Eli, age 17, living with the Gideon J. Gilreath family, listed as brother-in-law (wife's name Elizabeth, age 30) Nancy, age 28, single, living with William Grant family, listed as a boarder. All of these Fletchers listed their father as born in NC and mother in Ga, same as your Alfred. Possibility of all being siblings and orphaned? Some were able to find homes with other siblings, others had to hire out as servants and maybe that was why Alfred was living with the Lyons family in 1870. Like I said, just a thought. Shawna
I have a small book written by Winnie Kroplenicki, another mountain cousin[who apparently has arrived at a different opinion than Elizabeth Barton],in which she uses the Cathey's Creek Church rolls to put forth the thought that Anna Right was married to a James Owen. She therefore asserts that James and Anna are our John Owen's parents. My brother a complete day this week researching the Right family through the LDS records.I have not found out what he uncovered yet.Getting past John and Lavinia, and proving it has become our pet project.
According to the 1870 census of Transylvania County, my ancestor Alfred Fletcher, then 14 yrs old, was living in the household of James Lyons, then 54 yrs old. Can anyone tell me why Alfred Fletcher was in this household? The 1880 census of Transylvania shows Alfred living with his wife and mother. I cannot find him anywhere on the 1860 census. ( He wouldn't be on censuses after 1880 because he died in 1885.) How did he arrive at the Lyons household? --- gmf
Those of you who have been to Transylvania County Historic Properties Commission seeking Glazeners have probably bumped into about 400 pages or so of a loose set of Glazener family history done by Ruth Bump back in the 60s I think. Anyway, we are going to get it bound because keeping about 400 pages in order is not easy, especially when there is no index or table of contents to help you find what you are looking for. I started sorting it out in preparation and a few pages have run away (part of the reason we are going to get it bound). Anyway, hoping some of you folks happened to make a copy of the missing parts. First problem. It starts on page 2b. So we are missing at least page 1 and 2 and 2a (She kepts adding more pages into it - before Gedcoms). Second Problem - Missing page 287. If anyone happened to copy any of these missing pages, could you please send me a copy of your copy so we can get the complete manuscript together for binding? Next project will be to come up with some sort of table of contents so that when you visit during their three hours a week you can find what you are looking for.
