First to clarify; The UsGenWeb project is a fantastic idea. It has given us all lots of useful information. It has some very wonderful and dedicated volunteers. Deep down inside I support the concepts of the project. But then there is Jane Moyer - County Coordinator for Transylvania, Swain, Henderson, & Macon Counties. Okay - we have all moaned and groaned over the complete lack of info from our county GenWeb site. I've complained numerous times over the past two years to county, state & national level and been rudely told to basicaly shut up by the former National Coordinator. Jane even has copyright violations on her history page - and she copied erroneous information. Well she just "updated" her page Still didn't fix the broken link Still didn't remove the out-of-print book that is listed for sale She didn't actually write a personally researched County History page Just sent off another big gripe letter to county, state, and national levels. Last round I was told that they needed more than just one person complaining. So I'm inviting you to join in County level writeus@gpsbooks.com State level ncgen@mindspring.com National level bwills@ionia.net Anyone want to offer to take over as coordinator? I know they won't let me do it (we have had that discussion before - that's why I went with ALHN) But I would be happy to help out anyone who wants to create a useful site for this wonderful county our ancestors called home. -- Linda Hoxit Raxter http://www.rootsquest.com/~alextree lraxter@citcom.net Western North Carolina Cemeteries and More! The Historical Society hired a dendrochonologist to help deterine when the house was built. The basic concept is to take a sample of wood and check the tree rings against nearby wood of a known age. I have been researching my ancestry (Deaver) for 2-3 weeks now, mostly on the net since I live in Texas and all of the early Deavers are from NC. Although most of my ancestors lived in Buncombe and Haywood Counties, I noticed a historical reference occasionally to a William Deaver House in Transylvania County that was recently restored. One of my earliest ancestors in NC was William Deaver, who was born in the early 1700s in VA, but lived most of his life in western NC until he died around 1805. I found one archaeology page which gave some info on this historic house, but would love more. Does anyone know of any brochures, books, or websites which would satisfy my curiosity? This is the site I saw: http://www.arch.dcr.state.nc.us/sites/deaver.htm Thanks! Joe D. Deaver Arlington, Texas jdeaver@eaze.net

I put a few maps up at "http://ncnatural.com/maps/". Of the four in that directory, probably the best ones are "1820roads.jpg", "paths&towns.jpg" and "ethnic.jpg". They're all pretty large files because I wanted to retain the detail. "1820roads.jpg" shows the main routes of travel in eastern America along with areas of settlement to 1820. "paths&towns.jpg" shows most of the Indian towns, white settlements and roads large and small in use from 1660 to 1775. "ethnic.jpg" shows the main routes that various nationalities traveled into the state. Hope these will make it a little cleare for everyone. And while I'm posting, does anyone have any info on Elmer Andrew Stewart who married 3/14/1880 in Iredell Co., Sarah Banner Washam? They lived in the area from Mooresville to Huntersville in Mecklenberg Co. there children included Mac, Bertha, Nellie, Hylie, Fred, Jack and Andrew Doyt, born 10/12/1896 in Huntersville. I've gone professional - but there is a reason. Transylvania, like most counties, does not have staff to do research for out of town folks. We did have one lady in the Reg of Deeds office doing a little bit of research on her own time, but she is retiring. What used to happen is folks would get a letter saying to hire a professional. Now I have learned that they are sending this plus my name (I guess since I hang out there so much). We used to have a professional genealogist, but she died. This all means that if you live in say Texas and need some local documentation on say some Deavors you have to hire a lawyer. And I really have no personal desire to research Deavors since I'm not connected to them (Amazing. eh?). I was discussing this with the new local Archives Chairman and we concluded that my offering some professional services would be beneficial. Anyway, charges will only be for very in depth research of local government documents. I'm still friendly. And I'll still be posting free stuff as fast as I can. Dear Friends, cousins, and members of the Macon and Transylvania County Lists: Some of you will receive this twice, but I wanted to make sure everyone got the notice and could pass it along to others you may know of. I have set up TWO new county lists, one for Swain County, North Carolina, and the other for Jackson County, North Carolina (Yes, I must be nuts for wanting to manage four lists!). You may subscribe in the usual manner: For Swain County: Message to NCSWAIN-L-request@rootsweb.com with only the word subscribe in the body of the message. For Jackson County: Message to NCJACKSO-L-request@rootsweb.com with only the word subscribe in the body of the message. Note that it's not JacksoN, but Jackso. If you want the digest version of these lists, put the letter 'D' where the 'L' is in the address. I haven't set up my welcome message yet, but will soon. Those of you with web pages that deal with these counties have my permission to put a notice on your pages. I would love it if you would! Many kind regards, Philip Sheppard Rootsweb Sponsor and Listowner NCMACON, NCTRANSY, NCSWAIN, NCJACKSO
Did you notice, on one of your visits to Lakeside, all the little stones that had Fisher Reunion (or some such)? Wonder when those were put there and if they were just identifying the graves or just the graves of Fishers... Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Fisher Reunion Association over the years have tried to place markers at all unmarked graves in the cemetery, when it is known for sure who is buried where. As to the cause of death that said some unreadable word plus stones and something, must be something to do with the gallbladder, maybe cholecystitis or cholelithiasis. Most of the people seemed to have graduated from the Hooked on Phonics School of Spelling back then <G>. Shawna

Morning folks, Well, for me it pays to get the Transylvania Times. In the December 31st edition, I found an obit for Libby O. Ammons, a daughter of Wiley and Ellie Galloway Owen. Now I have another set of names to enter in a family in which I had only two infants buried at Jackson Owen Cemetery. Let me know if you want the obit.
