    3. I don't have a lot on our Johnsons. We found him in the 1880 census of Jackson County, N. C. Cullowhee #120/120 Thompson Rickman, 31. b. N. C. both parents b. NC Thompson Melvina, wife, 30, b. S. C. both parents b. SC Thompson Western, son, 8, b. NC, father b. NC mother b. SC Thompson Robert son, 6, b. NC, father b. NC. mother b. SC Thompson Selma V. daughter 4 b. SC father B. NC mother b. SC Johnson, Andrew, 12, "laborer", works on farm, b. Ga. Father B. Ga. mother b. SC Thompson Elisabeth Mother , 65, widow, b. NC This Andrew, we are pretty sure would have been Melvina Thompson son. They were living next door to David T. and Rutha C. Mills. Andrew married thier daughter. Melvina and Rickman Thompson were married on 6 January, 1871. There was a notice of Divorce Action on March 7, 1896. ( this was in "Journeys Through Jackson Vol. V 1995.) Judgement was in the Fall Term 1896. In the 1900 census of Jackson Co. NC- Caney Fork Johnson, Lewis, Aug. 1861, 38 widow, b. SC, father b. SC, Mother b. NC Thompson, Melvina, Mother, July 1841, 58, 7 children, 4 living, widow, b. NC. both parents b. NC. Westley Thompson and his family was living next door to them. My mother- in- law had Joel Andrew's mother as Melvinia. She also had him a brother named Lewis. Andrew was her grandfather. In one of the census Melvina has her parents born in N.C and in another in SC. There is also a ten year age difference for her. We were told by an granddaughter of Joel Andrew, that Melvina had Joel Andrew before she was married??? We found in the Records of Settlements 1884--1905 of Jackson County, NC. on page 341 "February 5, 1900 Andrew Johnson #46 5 " We don't know if this is our Andrew ??? Here is what we were told by older family members. Don't know how much is true. Joel Andrew and his wife Melinda were living in Jackson County, N. C. ( or Cocke County, Tenn. ). Joel got sick and went back home to his mother and died. Another one told us that Melinda and Henry Hooper killed him. Then got married. But, they could had thought that since they were together, that it killed Joel Andrew. ??? We have heard so many different stories about him. We know that Melinda and Henry were married in Cocke County, Tenn. in 1901. We were told that they got an telegram that Andrew was dead, and they got ready and went to town and married. Henry and Melinda were living together as "Cousin" in 1900 Census. We were also told that Joel and Henry were working on the roads and Joel Andrew brought Henry home with him, that is how Henry met Melinda. Henry was then married to Mary Massey and had seven children. Andrew and Melinda had six children. When Henry and Melinda married they had six children Like I said, WE don't have a lot to go on. We know that Joel Andrew Johnson married Eliza Melinda Mills on August 21, 1887, at B. N. Watson's in Jackson County, NC They had the following Children. 1. Florence Johnson "Hooper" born August 10, 1888 died Oct. 1939Rutherford County, N. C. 2. Jana Johnson "Hooper" born April 14, 1890 died May 8, 1903 Spartanburg County, S.C. 3. Thomas Garland Johnson "Hooper" born January 15, 1892 died Nov. 6, 1971 Rutherford County, N.C. 4. Rutha Mae Johnson "Hooper" born April 7, 1893 died Sept. 29, 1923 Rutherford County, N. C. 5. Bertha Johnson "Hooper" born June 14, 1895 died Rutherford County, N. C. 6. Vernon Johnson "Hooper" born April 28, 1899 died Feb. 27, 1902 Spartanburg County, S. C. We were told that Henry made all the Johnson children go by "Hooper". Thomas Garland Johnson Hoper was my husbands grandfather.

    3. Hi! Good to hear from Johnson researchers. I have a Joel that isn't attached to the tree I'm working on, but I kept tabs on him anyway because you just never know, you know? :--) However, he's probably older than the Joel you're looking for. I'll slap what little I have on at the bottom. If you can give me a little more on birth years etc., locations, I'll see if I can dig something up for you. In a second email I'll send you what I have on my friend's Johnson line just in case you ever see something that clicks. One of the reasons I wondered about the connection is the Riley middle name for William Riley (my friend's earliest known ancestor is Riley Johnson) and the association of the Welches, etc., which married in elsewhere on his tree. There is a Hooper as well who married a Chastain, another family that seems to be closely associated with the Johnsons. There's an Indian connection in their tree, and Riley and wife are living next door to them in one census record...his wife Nancy's surname is unknown and I thought it might be Chastain, there was a Nancy Chastain, daughter of the people next door, but other researchers show her to have married someone else. So I'm at a dead end. And there are branches of the family I do know that I haven't been able to track down. There are Mills amongst the Medlins that married into my friend's Lindsay branch, also in Swain Co.. No idea how/if they're connected to yours, once again, like Johnson, it's a common name. You ought to remember to look for Johnston if you're having trouble. I found "my" Johnsons in censuses listed both ways, though Johnson is more prevalent. There was a story in the Johnson family that one member somewhere, and no one ever has a name or even a date or decade, that a Johnson killed someone and had to, er, relocate. If you ever hear something like that, let me know. Carol McCrellias Rochester/Honeoye Falls Descendants of Joel Johnson Generation No. 1 1. JOEL1 JOHNSON was born 1830. He married [UNKNOWN CHEROKEE WOMAN]. Child of JOEL JOHNSON and [UNKNOWN WOMAN] is: 2. i. WILLIAM RILEY2 JOHNSON, b. 1854, Tennessee. Generation No. 2 2. WILLIAM RILEY2 JOHNSON (JOEL1) was born 1854 in Tennessee. He married NANCY DRUCILLA WELCH, daughter of WILLIAM WELCH and CATHERINE SAWYER. She was born 1859 in Cherokee Co., North Carolina. I've changed my profile to make my e-mail address accessible, so try clicking on my name in the URL/From line and see if it gives it to you. I have a lot of material on Johnsons, too much to post here. Your user i.d. is, of course, private, so I was not able to divine your e-mail address, and so I must wait for you to contact me. What tree I have constructed has a few Kirklands...Callie, b. 1886, married to a Lindsay, and Rhoda, b. ca. 1810, married to a Cline, whose daughter married a Brendle. I certainly recognize the Kirkland surname as well as that of Morgan from having scanned lots of Swain Co. material and from my association with a few long-time residents of Swain Co., but I don't have much linked yet to those trees. Their presence comes from their marriages into Brendle and Lindsay families, which are part of my friend's Johnson tree. I do have big holes in the Johnson branch and would like to compare notes to see if there's anything that might be "magnetic." :--) If you can't get through via e-mail right away, I'll post my address in two parts and from there you should be able to figure out how to find me. In the meantime, I wonder if you have any estimated birth dates (years?) for the people you've listed. It's certainly good to hear from another Johnson researcher...I was beginning to wonder if there were any out there! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Fa. b. Ireland, mo. b. NY. In 1930, there a LOT of Frank (or Francis, which is probably what his name was, being Irish) Farrel(l)s...only one is recorded as being b. in Virginia (West Virginia), though the census record has both his parents born in West Virginia as well. There have been errors in census reports. Or, he could have been in Canada working, or elsewhere, or missed in the census somehow...or indexed wrong. The "possible" (though not certain) "Frank Farrel" is the only (West) Virginian...he is living on 08 April 1930, in South Huntingdon, Westmoreland Co., PA, a boarder in the household of Joseph Lindway (b. W VA.) Odd coincidence, Westmoreland Co., South Huntingdon and Mt. Pleasant, are where my McCrellias ancestors lived, back ca. 1790-1840. I guess it shouldn't be too much of a surprise, there were a lot of Scot-Irish in the area. I wondered about a Farrell woman being born in NY, poss. residing in VA...meaning Frank's mother. I went looking a little for that, found (not knowing of course if any of these have anything to do with Frank....): On 07 Apr 1930, South Norfolk, Norfolk Co., VA, the house of Fred E. That would narrow things a bit. Walter would probably have been of an age to serve in WWII, but there's not enough information on the online WWII enlistment indexes to track to parents, etc., only location of enlistment, birth year, state of birth, and then service information. There are a lot of NC birth index records for Walter Jacksons, many without mothers' names. Swain Co. is not yet represented well in that index, my guess is they haven't had a lot of volunteers to transcribe records (or there weren't many records kept at certain times, though by the time the '20s, '30s, and '40s came around the chances are better). As for my e-mail address, if you click on my name in blue, it should take you to another Web page where you can read my e-mail address. It will be in graphics (picture) format so automated scanners can't read it and use it for spamming...another reason I won't type it here. If you still can't find it that way, let me know and I'll type it out in another message board posting, splitting it into two separate messages so it's not shown as one line. I didn't find a birth index record for a Susan Farrell, either. Did she marry, and do you know where or about when? As for Florida, I think there may have been other family members down there. Frank could have been in WWI, I suppose, but he would have been very young. Maybe, he registered but didn't serve. His older brother, Edward, had a naval career, as did at least one of his sons. I think Aileen's birth name was Wiggins, which is why she went back to it after being Jackson. On Frank's death cert. she is Wiggins. I only asked you to look for Jackson, because of her son's name. If she lived most of her life in Swain Co, but was married to Frank in Forsyth Co that could be where her divorce took place. I would be interested to find out the birth date for their daughter Susan Farrell and whether or not she married (Byrd) in NC. She is listed in Florida when Aileen died. If you can find Frank somewhere in 1930, I'd be interested to know if his sister Catherine is nearby. I thought she was still in VA in 1930, but haven't been able to find her. Her sister Agnes was in Richmond. Agnes never married, but I don't know about Catherine. This family is definitely a lot of work. I would LOVE to contact one of these cousins and have them know enough to have everything else fall into place - but that would be too easy, wouldn't it? Wiggins and Estelle Corinne Roberts. And after I'd gathered my brain cells, I figured Aileen would have to have been married before, if she had a son surnamed Jackson...rather than her mother having been married before. And I do wonder about a WWI record somewhere. There are records for Frank Farrells, but I didn't see one for the birth year 1901 (or 1900 or 1902), so it might be he didn't serve (or register) after all. I did check briefly for Aileen Wiggins marrying a Jackson and couldn't find anything on the quick. But that doesn't mean it isn't out there. Another thing I wondered: Could her mother have been married before, and the Wiggins been her stepfather? I had that happen with my gr-grandmother...for 30 years I looked for Ada Rittenhouse and it turned out that her birth name had been Ada Kinney. Boy, was I mad. But there was more to her story that I found out later than explained some of why no one knew much about her. Anyway.... Am feeling a little better, today, thanks. This is one of those freight train flus...hits like a train and only lasts a few days. Still wobbly, and can't stare long at a screen, but I'll see what I can find as I get better. I want to take a clearer look at various census records for the family members, see what pops up. By the way, feel free to contact me directly via e-mail. Thank you so much! I hope you are feeling much better, today. That probably is "my" Frank in Ohio in 1920. It would be interesting to know where he was in 1930. Yes, the Aileen J Wiggins in 1930 is probably the same woman. In her obit, it said she had a son, Walter Jackson living in NC. So, she probably married Jackson and then divorced. (Can you find that info?) After she married Frank in 1936, they had a daughter Susan(date?) I assume she was born in NC, since they didn't move to Florida, until 1970. Maybe, Frank was there in 1930 and found he liked it. Have a very happy Easter! Florence Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
