    3. I think the Zachariah Hawkins (among other Hawkins households) listed in the 1850 census in Cherokee Co., NC, is the same as listed in Jeff Haley's Haley/Hawkins family tree posted at RootsWeb's World Connect site. (Input Zachariah Hawkins, b. Georgia, in the search section and it should come up with Mr. Haley's data as part of the results.) Perhaps he can help you find answers to your Hawkins mystery. I did see Uriah Hawkins, brother to Zachariah, in Forsyth Co., GA, as I recall, perhaps as a head of household in 1840. 3. A couple questions: Are you absolutely sure Jeptha, Henry, WD, and Andrew were all brothers? And have you looked at Cherokee Co., NC, in 1850 at the Hawkins families listed there? I find in 1860 that Jeptha was born ca. 1824 in North Carolina; his wife Angelina Brown is living there in Cherokee Co. in 1850 and it would follow that the Hawkins there at the time are either the same or close relatives. A few other ideas. If Jeptha's mother remarried after the death of his father, for example, she would have a different last name and sometimes the children by the previous marriage appear in census records for a decade or two with the stepfather's surname, only later, as adults, to return to their birth surname (or not). Or the other way around, Hawkins could be a step-name. Sometimes people went by their middle names, or by an unknown third name. Census records are notorious in certain locations and in certain years for having mistakes. Also, sometimes they were recorded with only a single initial. Gary is a native and resident of Jackson County, NC and his paternal grandfather was from Macon County. He is a great playwright, and his plays will hold you spell bound. The play is about "notorious outlaw" Lewis Redmon of western NC and is very good. This is a not-to-miss event in my opinion! Message Board, included: "If my research is correct, James Woodard may have 'divorced' Mary around 1861-62, because James Woodard married Stacia Matilda Sprinkle around 1862, and Mary (listed as single) was living with her son Madison in Charleston, Swain County, NC on the 1900 Census." According to the following, James Woodard married Stacia Matilda Sprinkle in 1860: "Early East Tennessee Marriages," Vol. 2, Brides, by Byron & Barbara Sistler, 1987, pg. 345: Stacy Sprinkle to James Woodard 12-29-1860 (12-30-1860), Washington Co., TN. They were residing as newlyweds in Stecoah, Graham County, NC on the 1900 Census. Lizzie was the daughter of James and Sarah Cable Williams. James (1858-1943) was my great grandfather and is buried in Cable Cove Cemetery in Graham County. Sarah Cable was his first wife. She died in 1892, and is buried in Cable Cemetery, North Shore of Fontana Lake. James' second wife, Susan Jane Woodard (1867-1933) is my great grandmother. I have Goldman and Lizzie living in Blount County in the 1910 Census, but the image is very hard to read. Their first child could be a Flora born in 1901. I believe their 2nd child's name may be Isadora and the third, Lois. The fourth child listed is a son, and his name may be Fred. Again, it is very difficult to read the image. Goldman Welch was shot and died in Blount County on 23 Aug 1911. I cannot locate the family after 1910, but there i! s a Isadora and Lois Welch listed in the Thomasville Baptist Orphanage in Davidson County, NC, on the 1920 Census. The ages seem to fit my Isadora and Lois. I guess Lizze would be a half great aunt to me, and I would like any additional information you may have. I know that you posted this a while back, but hopefully you will still get this. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
