I am Researching, Dobson / Lane / Layne family in Surry County NC. from 1790 to 1839. My GG Grandfather was Maridy Lane (Possibly of Cherokee decent). born abt.1805 in North Carolina (Possibly Surry County) , died 12-06-1895 in Pike County, Ky. The story of my GG Grandfather Maridy Lane goes like this. He is believed to have been a Dobson and later changed his name to Maridy Lane. Maridy Lane Married Margarett Phillips 11-14-1839 in Pike County Ky. Margarett Phillips was the Daughter of Zachary Phillips and Elizabeth Charles both born in NC and moved to Kentucky. I have a copy of the will of Charles Taliforro (not sure if the last name is spelled correct) that Maridy Lane had witnessed on Aug. 14 1837 in Surry County NC. Other witnesses of the will were Silas Jones Jurot and Anderson Dunnagon. The signature on the will of Charles Taliforro and the signature on the marriage licens of Maridy Lane are the same. I found a William Lane and John Lane in the 1790 Surry County Census but I am unable to make a connection between them. I believe that he has a connection with a Grist Mill in the area because Maridy brought two mill stones with him from Surry County when he moved to Kentucky between 1837 to 1839. One of the stories has Maridy comming to Kentucky riding a mule on a wooden saddle. Then going back to Surry County for the mill stones and some other tools. Another Sotry passed down form older family members say Maridy Killed someone in North Carolina, fled to Kentucky and changed his name from Dobson to Lane/Layne. Yet another story has Maridy on the Trail of Tears. If Maridy changed his name from Dobson to Lane his father's name could Possibly be Joseph Dobson. I have researched Maridy Lane (Dobson) for over 10 years without any luck If anyone has any information that may help me in my search it would be greatly appreciated.
