Hi! I've been subscribed to this list a few days, but it doesn't seem to be very active, so I decided to jump in with a question someone might be able to answer. I believe that my 4th g-grandfather died in Surry Co in 1883. A distant cousin has an old letter which gives the year he died, but not the place, and I believe I have found him in the 1870 and 1880 census for Surry Co NC. Can anyone tell me if death records were kept in the county in 1883? And if they do exist, where would I find them? I recently moved to Charlotte NC (a couple hours south of Surry Co) and I may have time to travel there sometime after Christmas, and I'd like to have some idea if what I'd be looking for exists!
