Unfortunately North Carolina didn't start keeping good records until the early 20th century: birth & death records (1913 sticks in my mind); *mandatory* deed registration (some time in the 1920s?). Your best bet is to look him up in the estate records at the Archives in Raleigh or in church/cemetery records. If he was a veteran, the Sons of the Confederacy might have info on him.
