The best way to find difficult-to-find locations in the US is via this site: http://www-nmd.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html This will take you to the form on the US Geological Service server where you can type in the name of a town, stream, valley, etc--along with a state if you have it--and get not only a readout concerning location and altitude, but also information about nearby locations and even a map that you can portray at various scales.
