    3. Soon after the Rev War closed, the people declared their independence from NC and set up a State Government of their own. It was named The state of Franklin, after Benjamin Franklin. John Sevier was elected Governor of the new state. BUT the new state had no gold or silver to back what they used for money. They tried paper money for a while but that soon fell by the wayside. Then they used animal skins, but it was hard to carry a skin for a dollar bill and what about change?? SO-NC sent a regiment of soldiers into TN , took John Sevier prisoner, took him to Morganton,NC for trial. A few days later, the trial was beginning and a strange thing happened. Some friends of Sevier's walked into the courtroom, snapped their fingers in the faces of the judge and jury, seized the prisoner and took him back to TN.---leaving the court and the crowd gazing in amazement. On account of his bravery in the Revolution,Sevier was allowed to go free and was never afterwards brought to trial. In 1796 TN was admitted into the UNION as a state. John Sevier was the first Governor. A lot of this disputed land was given as bounty land to the Rev War soldiers,I think, and that is why there are NC land records in TN. How's that ?
