It also has a pic of Rufus Calvin Hamby in his Civil war uniform, if anyone would like the article let me know and i will forward it to you Kathy Prior to 1772 Samuel Gentry and three sons Abednego, Meshach and Shadrack, came from England to Norfolk, VA (These names are from first Daniel - verse 7). Shadrack settled near Norfolk, Samuel and sons Abednego and Meshach settled in NC and were very large land owners. Samuel Gentry was a cartwright. He built carts and wagons for the Army from 1776 to 1781. Meshach is the father of Allen Gentry. Allen Gentry is the father of Atha Gentry. Atha is the father of Jordain Gentry (4-27-1823 to 2-9-1879). Jordain Gentry m Nancy Adeline Barker (8-29-1831 to 3-3-1901). They are buried at Shoaly Branch Bapt Church. They were originally buried at the homeplace. The road was about to take the two graves and the graves of two of their children Tyre and Addie they were moved sometime in the early 1930's to the church graveyard. To Jordain and Nancy were born Delphia, Tyre, Adeline, Cornelius C, John Sowell and Charlie Gentry. Jordain Gentry has been married before and had a daughter named Rachel who married Jimmie Byrd. She moved to N Wilkesboro. The rest of the family thought she had died, and then found out she was still alive. John Sowell went to N Wilkesboro and finally found her, they were so glad to see each other. That was the last time he ever saw her. Delphia Gentry m George Guilliam; Charlie m Nancy Darnell; Cornelius m Vicia Luffman and John Sowell Gentry m Laura Hamby. Laura Hamby's parents were Rufus Calvin and Nancy Swink Hamby. Her grandparents were Ephram and Elizabeth Money Hamby, and Mike and Polly Went Swink. Mike Swink had land and slaves in Salisbury. When he died he left all his slaves and a livable house and land. When Rufus and Nancy came to State Road to live, Fannie, an old colored slave who had been with the family for years came with them. Laura Hamby remembers the slaves running after them crying and begging to come along with them. The graveyard on State Road is on land left to Laura Hamby Gentry and John Sowell Gentry, by her parents. The children of Rufus and Nancy Swink Hamby were; Dr Lee Hamby, Lock, Frank, Laura Gentry, Maggie, Michael and John. Rufus m twice. He married Caroline Young who owned land around Klondike farm and I have been told she gave the land for Grassy Creek Church. John Sowell Gentry and Laura Hamby were married March 16, 1886. Their children; Lula R, Rufus Grover, (twin boys, one died the day it was born and the other the next day), Corneilius Joseph Austin, John Ralph, Stella Louise and Harvey Byron Gentry. Rufus Gentry m Idelia Tulbert and they had the following children; Mary Marie, Rufus Grover Jr, George Lee, Minnie, DeWitt, Pauline and Weta Gay. Minnie burned to death in 1917. Idelia d in 1935 and Rufus m Ethel George. Marie m John Edgar Smith who d in 1940, they had one child Rose Marie, she then m Charles Clarence Thompson and he died in 1973. Rose Marie Smith m Sam Harris and they have three children; Anna Marie, Laura Rose and Rachael. Anna Marie has one child. Rufus Grover Gentry Jr m Donna Mae Alrick Gentry, they had three children; Gayea, Rufus Grover lll and James. Rufus Grover lll d in 1972. George Lee Gentry m Mattie Lee Johnson and they have one son, George Lee Jr. who m Susan Marie Loveless and they have two children Nicholas Lee and Rhiannon Marie Genrtry. DeWitt m Charles Freeman and they have one son Charles Ricky who m Joyce Ann Walls and they have one child Kelly Denise. Pauline m Floyd Roberts after his death, she m Luther Park.
