Hi, everyone, I am hoping someone out there has some further documentation on the family of Elkanah LEWIS (Sr.) of Surry/Stokes Co., NC, and can clarify relationships between the Lewises, Wallers, and assorted Franklins. I have heard a lot of information on Elkanah Lewis Sr.'s children, but have seen little or no documentation for most of them. Here is what I have seen claimed: Daniel WOOLF married a daughter of Elkanah's named Magdalena (and it is true that a Daniel WOLFE was located near Elkanah Sr. on a couple of censuses---but there was more than one Daniel WOLFE.) Elkanah is said to have had a son named Frederick Lewis, and another named Elkanah Jr. There is evidence that does prove that Elkanah had a son of the same name; Elkanah Jr. supposedly married either Mahala ROSS ( dau. of John), or Mahala RIGGS (dau. of Lott.) Anyone have an actual record or abstraction of Elkanah Jr.'s marriage? And there was a Frederick Lewis in the area, but does anyone have any proof whose son this Frederick was? Who did he marry? Who were his children? There is strong suggestion in documents that I have collected that my Sarah "Sallie" Lewis may have also have been Elkanah's daughter (she married John Franklin {ca. 1753-1832.}) There is also a suggestion that Elkanah may have had a daughter, Ruth, that married James Franklin (it is not clear what relationship there may have been between James and my John, but there is certainly an implication that they were somehow related...though not brothers, I don't think. [Our John appears to have considerably older than James, and James' apparent brothers?, Malekiah, Walter, and Owen.]) What I have found in actual documents shows that: Elkanah Lewis patented land in 1778 on the south fork of Mitchell River in the Mitchell River Community (this land is now in Surry Co., but at that time the land was officially in Wilkes Co., and that is where this grant was recorded.) (There also appears to have been a William Lewis in the area, but I have not found enough evidence on him to determine if he and Elkanah were closely-related or not. However, it is certain that there was another William Lewis in Stokes/Surry that was NOT William Terrell Lewis--- this other man was illiterate.) Sometime before 1783, Elkanah also patented land on Frees/Fries Creek, then in Surry, later in Stokes Co., and now located in Forsyth Co., NC, at the central, extreme eastern Yadkin Co. line. (Have not found record of this patent yet---anyone out there have it?) In 1780, Henry WALLER patented land on Frees Creek. In 1783, John FRANKLIN patented land on Frees Creek---adjacent the line of Elkanah LEWIS. On the same day in 1783, Michael TEAGUE patented land on Bashava Creek [Bushava, Bechewa, Bathsheba, Barshavia Creek] adjoining KRUGER, Henry SHORE, and the agreed line with Elkanah LEWIS. (John FRANKLIN witnessed one deed during 1785, and signed with his own name rather than a mark. He was listed as a juror in 1784, and then replaced the same year [you had to be a landowner during this period to vote or perform public service.] John Franklin was listed as insolvent in Capt. LOVILL's Dist. in 1785, with 100 acres & 1 poll. I'm not certain if any of this referred to my own John Franklin, or to an older or contemporary one who was recorded in Stokes Co. in 1790.) Henry WALLER had purchased items at the 1775 estate sale of Tyree GLENN in Surry Co. Henry left his will in 1783 in Surry, naming his wife, Sarah, and minor children, Jacob, Adam & Henry. Witnesses to the will were Henry Waller's neighbor (and possible relation?), James SHORT, and Elkanah LEWIS. James SHORT and Elkanah LEWIS also posted bond as Sarah's securities the same year for her to administer Henry's estate. The inventory of Henry WALLER's estate was taken by James SHORT & Elkanah LEWIS. In 1785, Sarah Waller was recorded on the Tax List of Capt. Lovill's District with 350 acres, and Jacob WALLER was listed with no land but with 1 poll. Jacob Waller sold a third portion of his father's land in 1793 to Adam BUTNER in Stokes Co. In 1789, the man we certainly know to be our John Franklin purchased land from Peter MURPHY in the Mitchell River Community in what is now Surry Co. In 1790, Elkanah Lewis Sr. was recorded between James and John Franklin there, with Elkanah listed as Elias (it was definitely him, as he was recorded with 3 males over the age of 16 at that time.) Sarah & Jacob WALLER were listed in Stokes Co. in 1790, living next door to the "other" John Franklin, and Malekiah & Walter Franklin, and later in the same area, Owen Franklin (both Malekiah & Walter later moved to Surrry Co., and lived close to my John Franklin---they appear to have been much younger than my John.) Elkanah LEWIS Sr. sold land to James FRANKLIN in 1795; the land was lying on the south fork of Mitchell River adjoining Benjamin HERNDON. In 1802, Elkanah LEWIS Sr. sold to Elkanah LEWIS Jr. a tract of land lying on the south fork of the Mitchell River, and adjoining the lands of Peter PERSON and James FRANKLIN. In 1804, Elkanah LEWIS sold to my Silas HARRIS a tract of land on Strawbridges' Creek adjacent Robert HOLBROOK. Witnesses to the deed were Robert HOLBROOK, and William Lewis FRANKLIN (the son of our John & Sarah "Sallie" Lewis Franklin.) (Silas HARRIS had married John & Sarah Lewis Franklin's daughter, Edith "Eada" Franklin in 1801.) By 1800, our John Franklin was aged over 45, with one son. By 1810, John was over 45, and his son was listed as aged 16-25. In the same neighborhood was his son-in-law, our Silas HARRIS; Walter FRANKLIN, Daniel WOLF, Aaron WRIGHT, and a widowed Mary LEWIS (whom I think was the widow of Elkanah Sr.? She may have been his 2nd wife, as she had young children in 1810.) Anyone have anything that helps document these LEWIS, WLLER & FRANKLIN lines? Look forward to any and all help in trying to sort out these people! Pam pamstone@cfl.rr.com
