    1. [NCSURRY] Alexander Kerr, son of Alexander

    3. Some of you are related to the Kerr family of early surry county. Many of you have alexander Kerr, Jr. who was enumerated in Surry in 1810, and then "disappeared" as dying in Surry shortly after that 1810 census. He did die, but not in Surry. Alexander Kerr and Leannah Jarvis were married in Surry co 8 Oct 1809. She was probably the dau. of John Jarvis. Alexander and Leannah had 3 children, not just the two listed in Alexander, Sr.'s estate settlement: William and Mahala (perhaps Martha) who would have been born between 1810 and 1812 and Levi jarvis Kerr who was born in TN in 1814. Alexander and his brother John Kerr served in the 3rd Regiment West Tennessee Militia Infantry in the War of 1812. This unit was raised from the Overton TN area. Also serving in the unit from Surry were Kendall Savage,(who was married to Leannah's sister, Sarah) and Bennett Jarvis.(Probably a bro to Leannah and Sarah) John Jarvis (probably another brother) served in a different company of the regiment. This unit fought at New Orleans under Jackson, and while it did not suffer heavy battle losses, they lost many in camp from disease after the battle. Alexander Kerr and Kendall Savage both died in New Orleans in the weeks after the battle. Both Leannah Jarvis Kerr and Sarah Jarvis Kendall received bounty land from their husband's service. Although I have not researched it, Bennett and John Jarvis both died about 1815, and it is highly possible that they died at New Orleans also, considering the heavy losses from disase in the TN units. Although Surry County marriage records are considered to be fairly complete, in a letter concering Leannah Kerr's pension application, the clerk of Surry County states that about some of the files in his office were "removed and confused", and he beleived many of the marriage bonds to be lost. this was an 1852 letter, and he placed the losses as dating about 25 yrs. previously. The Gen. Soc. of White County TN will be publishing an article I wrote up about this with more information. It should go out in the April edition of their journal.
