    1. [NCSURRY] Some Harris Mix-Ups
    2. Dear Pam, You wrote, Hi, everyone, I apparently didn't get the original posting that prompted this response. Capt. Robert Harris (the son of Robert Harris and Mourning Glenn of Louisa & Albemarle Cos., VA), and the husband of Lucretia Brown Harris, did NOT die in 1796! [Where do people keep getting that year of death for Robert Harris who died in Surry Co., NC? It is not correct, and people should please stop posting it as though it is proven. The actual documents show that this information is not correct at all---this particular Robert Harris did not die until 1809 in Surry Co., NC. Please, everyone who has notations on this man, correct your notes for him.] This Robert Harris and his family had moved, along with his parents, from Louisa Co. to Albemarle Co., VA, near the end of his parents' lives. Robert Harris Sr., and his wife, Mourning Glenn, died there, and their wills are recorded there. I do have documentation for this family in Louisa Co., and other earlier families, but I only will post a couple of vital ones in Albemarle, and a portion of what is relevant in North Carolina. And, by the way, Benjamin Brown Sr. had a large number of children before he started "going for the B's"; only his younger children's names all started with the letter "B". Lucy Brown Harris died sometime before1806, and Robert died there in 1809. An additional document that I am including here is the will of Cornelius Dabney [second father-in-law of this Robert Harris' brother, Christopher Harris, whose second wife was apparently Cornelius' daughter. {Cornelius Dabney's daughter, the second wife of Christopher Harris, was the mother of a number of his children that are named in his 1794 Madison Co., KY will...}] Robert Harris [Sr.] of Surry Co., NC, wrote his will in 1806 and died in 1809 in Surry Co., NC. His land was on the Ararat River in Surry Co. [DNA proves that this Harris line matches to the family of my own William Harris, who died in 1848 in Wilkes Co., NC at the age of 96 {having removed from Culpeper, VA, to Surry, NC, then Wilkes, NC.} How they possibly are related is, as yet, undiscovered. My William Harris was illiterate, and this Robert Harris was quite wealthy, and his family had always been literate, as far as I can tell. It is a mystery.] Here is the brief but clear documentation for the lines of the couple of Robert Harrises of this line as I have found it. As E. W. states, if you use any of this information, please cite the sources in the correct way (the researchers spent many hours in their work, and they deserve the tribute to them, and acknowledgement of the copyrights thereof. We would certainly all be lost without their work, so please be respectful in this regard, and always post all sources.) Pam _pamstone@cfl.rr.com_ (mailto:pamstone@cfl.rr.com) My response: I cannot remember--but will look through old sent mail--whether I messed up the death date of Robert Harris of Surry Co., NC. Furthermore, I do not collect all of the Benjamin Brown's children, so I am willing to make corrections as needed. However, if I am reading the information about Christopher Harris of Madison Co., KY, previously of Albemarle Co., VA correctly, then I need to correct information about his second wife--Agnes McCord, who survived him. I will send separately info that I *picked up* about Robert Harris, the son of Major Robert Harris of Louisa Co., VA, and I would appreciate any corrections you wish to make. Mary Dabney is reported to be the first wife of Christopher Harris, and this is partialy confirmed by the fact that Christopher in his will refers to his first children and a will of Cornelius Dabney [which Cornelius Dabney?] Also the first child named is Dabney Harris. Here are some of my notes about Agnes McCord, who survived Christopher Harris, and her name appears several times in the deed index of Madison Co., KY. Also, her name appears in some of the notes made by ... Lyman C. Copeland in Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia.[on the internet]. AGNES McCORD. (d. ca 1815, Madison Co., KY) Agnes was the second wife of Christopher Harris, of Albemarle Co., VA, later of Madison Co., KY. They are believed to have been married in 1760, as their oldest son, Benjamin, is said to have been born 28 Nov 1760. This information may need some "adjustment." Thus, Agnes was probably at least age 14-18 at time of marriage. However, preliminary research of Albemarle Co. deed indexes indicates that as late as 1768, Agnes may have been a single woman, but that by 1772, she was married to Harris. As seen from the deed entry in Albemarle Co., in late 1760, Agnes McCord seems to have been a single woman, not yet married to Christopher Harris. [Albemarle Co.] DB 2, Page 294: 14 Aug 1760 Wm. More study is needed. Recorded in Augusta Co., VA, Deed Bk 22-397: 17 Nov 1778 Christopher Harris and Agnes of Albemarle to John Collins. Delivered: Thos. Turk, Aug 1779. (Lyman Chalkley in CHRONICLES OF THE SCOTTISH-IRISH SETTLEMENT IN VIRGINIA, V. 3; Chalkley also indicates that Deed Bk 22, p. 395, Augusta Co., VA had a deed executed by Christopher Harris and Agness (--) 17 Nov 1778, but details were not given.) However, we learn from Augusta Co. VA Will Book 3 that other McCords were in Albemarle Co. ca. 1762, and others were in Augusta Co. from 1749. Perhaps they migrated there from Pennsylvania. Apparently they were Presbyterians. Refer to biography of John McCord [Sr.]. Some of the McCords found in Lyman Chalkley's CHRONICLES OF THE SCOTCH-IRISH SETTLEMENTS IN VIRGINIA are as follows. All were located in Augusta Co. unless the contrary is indicated: Martha McCord - deceased by 27 Feb 1749 James McCord, orphan of Wm. McCord - 1750. Later in the year James was of age (age 14 generally) to choose his own guardian. Sarah McCord's nuncupative will. Sister Mary; brother Adam. Joseph McCord's will, 25 Nov 1762. Wife Mary. 3. Wow! E.W., I am really impressed by your being willing to share your hard-won research! (And its depth---you are really a great researcher on your end of these Harris lines!) Thank you---you just may be able to significantly help determine how, exactly, my illiterate William Harris of Culpeper, VA & NC relates to your much-better-educated Harris line. Thank you so much for sharing it with me and all the other Harris researchers. I will need some time to digest all of the documents you have provided, to comprehend all of them, and to appropriately respond to this mail. Thank you for your kindness and generosity to all of us Harris researchers. I certainly will be back in touch with you. And again, I thank you.
