    1. Cemeteries with Stone burials; ? 1891 epidemic??
    2. Lynn E. Wesson
    3. I posted this on the Wilkes list but thought I would try the Surry list since Edwards township was near Elkin in Surry Co. I am hoping that someone on the list can point me in the right direction. My second great grandparents were William Franklin Stone, b1845, d1891, [son of John Stone and Elizabeth Mahaffey] and Martha Joyner, b1843, d1891, [daughter of Hugh Joiner and Nancy Ellis]. William Franklin Stone and Martha Joyner Stone married in 12/1866 in Wilkes Co. They are in the Edwards township in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. Their children were Elizabeth Lamarah [my greatgrandmother, who married Wilson Leander Driver], Marcus H., Sarah, Nancy, Mary Emma, William Realus, and Robert. There is a marker at Macedonia Baptist Church in Wilkes Co. commemorating William Franklin and Martha Stones' deaths in 1891; also listed on the marker as dying in 1891 are Robert Stone and Ella Stone [presumably either the Nancy or Sarah from censuses]. Buried at Macedonia are Marcus H. Stone [d 1921] and his wife Fannie [d1950] and some of their children. We contacted current ministers and caretakers of the Macedonia church and cemetery and have been told that the stone listing William F., Martha, Robert, and Ella was erected by relatives [the caretaker and minister didn't know which relatives], and that in fact these 4 family members are buried elsewhere, either in a family cemetery or a defunct church cemetery. Questions: 1] Are there any defunct churches with cemeteries in/near the Edwards township area? 2] Is anyone aware of a Stone family cemetery in/near the Edwards area? 3] Is anyone aware of any epidemic in the Wilkes Co./Surry Co. area in 1891? Thanks to anyone with any information about these matters! Lynn Wesson Hillsborough, NC

We are participating in the SOUTHERN SMITHS DNA PROJECT in hope of finding our correct SMITH lineage. We encourage all that have Southern SMITH roots to visit the website and consider participating in the project. http://www.southernsmiths.org/smithdnaproject.htm We have noticed quite a few people on Rootsweb and FamilySearch.org and other websites are or were researching our SMITH family, but in most instances we cannot contact them because of unknown or invalid email addresses. If you have any knowledge or connection with these SMITHS please consider helping us in this research. We will be more than glad to share information Sheryl Smith Phillips

    3. Posted as a public interest for those in genealogy, not as a sponsor. Bob Carter Greensboro, NC ---------------------------------------------------- THE MOUNT AIRY MUSEUM OF REGIONAL HISTORY presents the first program in the series, "Tri-County Tragedies": "The Charlie Lawson Family Tragedy" Sunday, February 26, 2006, 3:00 pm Esther Johnson and Patrick Boyles will discuss this Christmas Day tragedy in Stokes County's history. On December 25, 1929, Charlie Lawson killed his wife, six of his seven children, and himself. Residents of Stokes County, born in the late 1800s and early 1900s remembered attending this funeral and described this sad episode in history to their children and grandchildren. This event is recounted in a song composed in 1930 and recorded by the Carolina Buddies. A book White Christmas, Bloody Christmas (1990) was written about this tragedy. Mrs. Johnson and Mr. Boyles first presented this program in 2003 incorporating the Lawson family genealogy with newspaper articles describing the event. This program will include the story, photographs, music, and genealogy of this family's tragic demise. 3. I've got him as William Felton DENNY, no DOB/DOD. He was to have married Nancy Maria Anna FULK on 11-5-1813, per the Surry County NC Marriage Records, Book A, page 1556 (date could be bond date). Nancy was b. 9-26-1788, d. 9-23-1873 in Indiana and this I think was from Owen County Cousins, but would have to check. Nancy was a daughter of Johannes FULK and Maria Rebecca HARTMANN, and I show Maria was age 84 in the 1850 Surry County, NC census and living with son Jacob in Pilot Mtn district; birthplace shown as Maryland. 1. Thomas Allen, born approx 1815, Surry Co., NC

    3. I'm hoping someone will be able to help in my search for information about a Thomas Allen I believe was from Surry County. Any information, no matter how small, will be very much appreciated. Working backwards, from census information, I believe the Thomas Allen I'm looking for was born about 1814 or 1815 in NC. He was enumerated in the census of 1850 in South District, Surry County, NC. Thomas was married to Majincy. I want to know more about Thomas Allen - his parents, where they came from etc. Anything! The facts that I do have are: 1850 Census, Surry Co, North Carolina, pages 60a - 267b, the South Division Fam # Surname Given Name Page # (file name) 824 Allen Louisa J 217a 824 Allen Majincy 217a 824 Allen Mary E 217a 824 Allen Thomas 217a 824 Allen Thomas M 217a ** 1860 Capps Creek Twp., Barry Co., MO 769. 756. Allen, 4, North Carolina, Male Margartt Allen, 2, North Carolina, Female William Cavaso, 42, Farmer, Italy, Male ** The Thomas Allen family of 1850 (NC) appears to be the same as the Thomas Allen family of 1860 in MO. My great-grandfather was Richard Young Allen, born in NC in abt 1853. I believe the Richard Y. Allen in MO 1860 census might be him. I am aware of the many Allen family lines that exist in NC. The fact that my great grandfather's middle name was Young, I'm guessing that he may descend from the Robert Allen that married Elizabeth (Stokes?) Young in abt 1729. Their children were: a. Young Allen, born 1730 b. James Allen, born 1732 c. Josiah Allen, born 1734 d. Robert Allen, born 1736 e. Elizabeth Allen, born 1738 f. Sarah Allen, born 1741 g. Susannah Allen, born 1743 h. Agnes Allen, born 1746 i. Drury Allen, born 1749 I have seen that so many of the descendants of this marriage have the name Young, either as a first or second name. I am trying to clarify if this Richard Young Allen and his father Thomas Allen come from this line. So, I apologise for all of the detail above but I hope it will help to narrow the search. Any information related to this family will be much appreciated. Thank you in advance, Judson Croft New Zealand

    1. Denny/Denney DNA Testing
    2. Richard Denney
    3. To Surry County NC kin and friends of our Denny/Denney families, I know that numerous Denny kin still reside in the Surry County area, Samuel Denny of Surry County created and left quite a heritage from that area and it would be great if we can get some of his kin to participate in the below program. I want to let you know that we have created a new program and web site for Denny/Denney research, Bill Denney of Vancouver, WA & I have put together a program "Denny Surname DNA Project" that hopefully will extend our family research capabilities. There is only so far you can go with paper trails, you always end up with countless dead ends, tentative attachments and theories which never seem to get resolved. We think with the advent of using DNA research we can further our knowledge of our family lines. Take a few moments and look over our web site & the plan and our partner, DNA Heritage. The web site is at http://home.comcast.net/~denneydna Also, if you think there is a chance you might be interested in joining this exciting new process, our test lab (DNA Heritage) currently has a special on for testing 43-markers at a cost of $137.77 (US) for the Denny Surname Project. This price will be in effect until March 7 only, (when it will return to the normal $189 (US) so if you want to participate you should do so prior to March 7. (Your DNA samples would have to be returned within three weeks of March 7, as well.) Bear in mind that payment for the DNA test does not have to be made until DNA Heritage receives your DNA test samples back. A 43-marker DNA test gives you much more resolution on questionable familial relationships than a 25-marker test (which costs $137.77 as well). If you know of other Denny's that may be interested, please let them know. Richard Denney NOTICE Genealogy data I collect will be added to my GEDCOMs on the Internet. Dates on living persons will be stripped, if you have problems with living/potential living persons being on the Internet, even with stripped dates, please do not provide me that data or advise me before hand. ALTERNATE E-MAIL ADDRESS If you suspect mail you send is not reaching me at rfdenney@insightbb.com and/or I am not replying, try my alternate address of rfdenney@gmail.com or send to both addresses BY ALL MEANS, KEEP TRYING, I DO NOT WANT TO LOSE CONTACT WITH YOU

    3. Hey John! Based on some of the surnames in my db, I'd say they lived in the eastern part of Mt. Airy and down towards Holly Springs, Westfield, etc. There's a big Midkiff Cemetery out off Hwy 89 East. 2. That should have been Lydia not Linda. Sorry. Most of the Creeds lived around The White Plains area of Surry Co NC. At this time, I don't know where she is buried. I have one of the sons as John Laffoon Creed b Feb 1859 Surry Co NC m Lilly Hope Sutphin. George W. Creed was a brother of my GGfather. 3. Thanks for that Marcus LAFFOON info. Do you know where he and Cynthia are buried? Marcus was a brother to my William L. [b. 1797 - 1868 MO]. I also didn't have the info on a dau named Linda, so that was a great blank filler too. Thanks again! Lanita in MO
