    3. Hi Nyla, Thanks ,but as far as I know the Stewart`s in Augusta CO are not related. I have just about researched them all and many have particpated in the Stewart DNA project. Let me know which line is yours, Ok? By the way the Creed`s lived by my Stewart`s in Surry CO NC. I know they intermarried with th HOLDER family of Pittsylvania CO VA that moved to Surry CO NC. The Jackson`s intermarried with the FORTNER/FORKER family of Surry CO NC. 3. I don't find their marriage in Surry, but they may have been married by baan thru the church or were common law. They are in Surry in 1850 census, Fisher River district (all born in NC): William, age 32, Blacksmith Mary, age 28 James, age 8 John, age 6 Nathaniel, age 3 Julia, age 1 William WILLIAMSON, age 12 George EDMOND, age 10 Record shows they appear to have lived with Oliver BRAY and his wife Mary. 3. Right, Mrs. Mary Bray is William's sister. To the best of my knowledge, they were Baptist, and I don't think Baptists did banns, but I could be wrong. I notice that the Surry Marriage book lists the couple and the bondsman, nothing else, which is different from what I'm used to in more western states. Does this mean that the listings are actually licenses rather than marriages? What I'm used to is having the preacher/JP/what have you who performed the ceremony listed, and occasionally a marriage would either not get listed or get listed with less than enough/less than correct information, because it was up to the person who performed the ceremony to come back to the county and register it after the fact, and sometimes they forgot, or relied on memory for detail and memory failed them. --pig On 5/9/06 18:46, "Bob Carter" <gravehunter@triad.rr.com> wrote: > I don't find their marriage in Surry, but they may have been married by baan > thru the church or were common law.

    3. Looking for information on William Butcher and Mary Holyfield, who left Surry County for Polk County, Missouri somewhere between 1850 and 1860. Mary appears to be the daughter of Watson Holyfield; her brother Lewis V. Holyfield seems to have gone to Polk County at the same time. Interested in learning more about the Holyfields. Also interested in anyone having any information on their marriage; I've never been able to find a marriage record for William and Mary. It should be somewhere around 1835, and they should have been in Surry County at the time, but it's not in the Marriages of Surry County book. William b 4 May 1818 in Surry Co., d. 24 Nov 1888 Polk Co., MO; son of James Butcher and Elizabeth Freeman. Mary b 3 May 1822 and d. somewhere between 1900-1910 censuses, Polk Co., MO; daughter of Watson Holyfield and Margaret Venable. (I've seen Mary's tombstone, it simply has no dates on it.) --pig

    1. Fw: [NCYadkin] Obituary, Velma Louise Brooks Harris, 78 [widow of Lemuel]
    2. PAM
    3. Hi, everyone, Does anyone know who this Lemuel Harris, the father of this family and the husband of the decedent, was the son (and grandson) of? The reason that I ask is that one of the descendant lines of our Silas Harris of VA & Surry Co., NC has a Lemuel Lewis Harris in it. Here is the line: Silas Harris [1775, VA-bef. 1860, Surry Co., NC] m. Edith "Eada" Franklin [1782-bef. 1870, Surry], dau. of John FRANKLIN & Sarah "Sallie" LEWIS> Joel Harris [1803?-aft. 1880, Surry, NC] m. Ann Melissa CASTEVENS/CASTEPHENS [1842-bef. 1920], dau. of Martin and Lusanna [Unknown] Castevens of Yadkin Co., NC. There are spotty records of the descendants of Lemuel & Ann in Surry Co., NC, but there are enough records to clearly identify most of the descendents of Lemuel & Ann through 1920. The children of Lemuel Lewis & Ann Melissa Castevens Harris, all born in Surry Co., NC, were: (1) Robert Wilson Harris, b. 1866 or 1867; m. Minda Elizabeth [Unknown]. Their known children were: (1) Hillery W. Harris, b. 1893/1894 (2) Claude M. Harris, b. 1895/1896; m. Annie L. [Unknown]. Their known children were: (1) Annie L. Harris, b. 1922/1923 (2) Fred C. Harris, b. 1927 A lot of the members of this branch seemed to live part of the time in Surry Co., NC, but also seemed, at different points, to have lived in undiscovered locations. Any help from anyone who can clearly identify any of the different branches of this end of our NWNC Harris line would be most appreciated. We have documentation to share on all the known descendants listed in this line, and we feel that it is the right of every descendant to have their own family line documentation free of charge. 3. With the help of one our new Surry County Genealogical Assn members, we've found the directions to Atkins-Watson Cemetery. Was in the old cemetery books by Wallace KALLAM. Here's the directions: Begin on SR 1003 at intersection of Old 601 Business and Siloam Road. Go south on Siloam Road approximately 2 miles and there will be a round sharp curve to the right, and an asphalt road turning to the left and a sign indicating Little Mountain Baptist Church on SR 2028. Turn left and continue to the top of the hill and turn left on SR 2026 and travel another 1.4 miles. Soon there will be a private dirt road leading to the left with an old home in the forks of the road surrounded by high trees and bushes. Travel down this dirt road for .4 miles and there will be a log cabin on the right. Just past this will be the Watson Cemetery on the right in a grove of pines. I would like to know more about the individuals, because at least part of them are related to me through Thomas Heath Dick, who was born in Guilford County but moved to Surry County in the 1840's, where he died in 1870. The graveyard had one grave marker in the grouping that was so eroded that I could not make out any lettering, although there were areas where there might have been lettering at one time. Near that stone were the following ones, all in a row and grouped together, so they must have been family members. It seems that the flu epidemic of 1918 or some other highly contagious illness must have decimated this family group. I am wondering if the infant child belongs to a younger Benjamin F. Griffith, as it would seem that Rebecca's husband would have been too old to remarry and have children by that point. Rebecca was a daughter of Thomas Heath Dick, but I know of no children of that couple by the name of Benjamin, so I am wondering if the younger Benjamin was a grandson. I would appreciate any help or further information on any of these individuals. ----------------- Our Mother REBECCA J. wife of BENJ. F. 1. Cemetery Location Project
    2. Bob Carter
    3. The Surry County Genealogical Association is undertaking a long term project to locate and define the cemeteries of Surry County, NC. This list will include (at a minimum) the name of the cemetery and directions on how to get to it, and also the geographical coordinates (longitude and latitude). We also hope to create photos as well as names the cemetery may have been referred to in the past. Some existing cemetery locations, not yet completed and compiled as a single source, can be found at: http://www.geocities.com/~surryco/cemdrdir.html http://www.genealogy.mountainscape.com/surrycousins/ We will also use the locations found at the Geographical Name Information System, a part of the US Geological Survey. The cemetery can be as small as one grave, or have hundreds of burials. Also, the grave markings don't have to be legible since we are locating burial places, not just grave markers. So, if you know of a location of a cemetery in Surry County, we certainly would appreciate any and all correspondence for this project. And while you may not know the exact location, but any reference to help us locate them would be helpful. All replies can be sent to me, or to Andy Hennis, President of the SCGA, or to Esther Johnson. Bob Carter Greensboro, NC

N.C.In Feb. 1822, Charles Taliaferro, guardian of Elizabeth Snow, lunatic, made his return to the Court which ordered it recorded. The Minutes of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions of Surry County record this on 14 Feb. 1822. Sondra
