    1. Specific Smith Individuals in Smith Family Cemetery
    2. Ronald Powell
    3. Hello Everyone: I have had several members of our mailing list ask me for names of the Smiths I am looking for in the Smith Family Cemetery in Surry County, North Carolina. Charles Smith (male) He was born on Sunday, August 30, 1730, in Albemarle County, Virginia. He married Anne Mallory on Monday, March 18, 1754, in Orange County, Virginia. He died on Friday, August 14, 1829, in Surry County, North Carolina. He was buried in the Smith Family Cemetery in Surry County, North Carolina. He was the son of Stephen Justephonius "J. K." Smith, Sr., and Mary Hawkins. I do not know if his wife was buried in the Smith Family Cemetery so I am including her: Anne Mallory (female) She was born on Friday, November 18, 1737, in Orange County, Virginia. She married Charles Smith on Monday, March 18, 1754, in Orange County, Virginia. She died on Tuesday, November 29, 1803, in Surry County, North Carolina. The date and location of her burial are unknown. She was the daughter of John Mallory and Anne Coyne. Four of their children died in Surry County and I am not sure whether they were buried in the Smith Family Cemetery: Stephen K. Smith (male) He was born on Sunday, April 18, 1756, in Surry County, North Carolina. He married Mary Unknown on Wednesday, October 08, 1788, in Surry County, North Carolina. He died on Saturday, June 14, 1806, in Surry County, North Carolina. Mary Smith (female) She was born on Friday, February 23, 1759, in Surry County, North Carolina. She married William Y. Tucker on Sunday, December 22, 1782. She died on Sunday, May 10, 1857, in the Town of Mt. Airy, Surry County, North Carolina. Mallory Smith (male) He was born on Thursday, September 21, 1769, in Surry County, North Carolina. He married Elizabeth Davis on Tuesday, December 21, 1802. He died in 1839 in Surry County, North Carolina. Nancy Smith (female) She was born on Wednesday, October 30, 1776, in Surry County, North Carolina. She married William Deathridge on Thursday, August 18, 1803, in Surry County, North Carolina. She died on Sunday, July 15, 1804, in Surry County, North Carolina. If anyone finds the location of the Smith Family Cemetery or a website, I would really appreciate a listing of the persons buried there so I can match it with other Smiths in my family tree to see if any other Smiths were buried there. Again, I would like to thank you in advance for your help. In Christ, Ron Powell

    3. Her is something for you that may be what you're looking for: Smith Family Cemetery South Main Street, Mt. Airy, Surry County, NC GPS Coordinates: N36° 28' 38.5", W080° 34' 33.7", elevation 1,225' Directions: From the intersection of Renfro & East Pine Streets in Mt. Airy, go south on Renfro Street (changes to S. Main Street) for 2.4 miles and the cemetery on the right. This is private property and was surveyed this past April 2006 by Andy Hennis, President of Surry County Genealogical Association. Is part of a larger survey of cemeteries in Surry County the SCGA is doing this year and next. So far, we've got over 240 cemeteries logged. However, at this time we aren't logging those who are buried there, just the existence of the cemetery, location, directions, and GPS coordinates. 1. Improved Access - Guilford County, NC records
    2. Bob Carter
    3. Great news! The Guilford County Register of Deeds has an improved website for researching vital records (births, deaths, and marriages). Try this link: http://66.162.203.229/vital/guilfordVitalSearch.php Plus, their computers in their offices are much better than they were in the past and photocopies are only 5 cents. Jeff Thigpen was elected Register of Deeds last year and he's done an outstanding job at modernizing their records. Now if we can only get him to put the actual old marriage bonds and marriage certificate images online. :-) Bob Carter Greensboro, NC

    1. Aaron Kennedy/Kenady/Kannady & Robert Holbrook---Marriages??? Relations???
    2. Pam Stone
    3. Hi, everyone, Can anyone out there provide me documentation (or abstracts) that identifies the relationships these two men? Robert Holbrook died in 1826 in Surry. Aaron Kennedy was his executor. Who was Robert's wife? (His father appears to have been Randolph Holbrook of Wilkes---anyone have a document showing who his mother was, too? His children?) Aaron Kennedy died in 1845 in Surry; Elijah Thompson was his executor. His wife's name was Temperance---anyone have a document showing his marriage (I don't know if he was from Surry or Wilkes Co. for sure---if anyone knows his parents, I'd very much appreciate that information, too.) Somehow, both of these men were connected to my Lewis line of Surry (not the famous one, but Elkanah Lewis of Stokes & Surry.) Thanks! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Pam pamstone@cfl.rr.com

    3. Does anyone on the list have any info on Tamsey Bartley who died in 1937 and is buried at Roaring Gap Baptist church in Low Gap? Tamsey was apparently born in Surry County and lived with the Thomas N Dickens family until her death in 1937. I have not been able to trace her on the 1860, 1870,or 1880. Tamsey was born ca 1857, This is not the Tamsey Murphy who married Hickman Bartley. I have no idea if Bartley was a married name or her family name, I have not found a marriage for her as it. Any and all info is appreciated, and I will be happy to share any info I have, as well do lookups in Surry co. 3. Lucinda, Is there a Richard, Frost or Frosty Snow on that census? I know he was on one of the Allegany CO census and he was married 3 times. He was my GG grandfather, he had a daughter named Rosa. They would also on Ashe CO census in 1870. Richard Frost Snow was the son of Thomas Snow and Betsy Wilmouth. 3. Hi, all, I posted this to the LEWIS list in response to a communication by Gene Lewis. Anyone out there in Surryland have documentation on Elkanah LEWIS Jr. marrying, 1799, a Ruth SMITH?? Any other documentation on Lemuel LEWIS (son of Elkanah Jr.) other than his marrying, 1827, Valinda POE? And on his daughter, Nancy Lewis POE, who married Alvis/Alphius POE? Anything on the other children of Elkanah Jr., reportedly Phoebe, Lucinda, Mary, Polly, and Elkanah, Jr. (sic: III)? (I do know that both Lemuel LEWIS & Alvis POE were deceased by 1850. Any will documentation out there?) Gene & everyone, The Elkanah Lewis that married in 1799 and had a son, Lemuel, was Elkanah JR. His father patented land in 1778 (not 1798.) And a number of other documents absolutely prove that there were two Elkanahs. Look at the dates and persons in the documentation below. --- I tend to go more for seeing what documentation I personally can actually find that proves facts about persons, rather than relying on older family histories or older research (although many family histories state facts later proven by further research to be absolutely correct.) Here is part of what I am trying to explain to you regarding Elkanah Sr. & Elkanah Jr. Note that both Elkanah Sr. & Jr were both literate (at least enough to sign their own names.) There is no way that there was only one Elkanah---they were father & son. Feb 13, 1799 Ruth Smith. This would tend to support his birthday being around 1775 in Huntington, which is what I have. We also have the same information that Lemuel LEWIS b. 1800 was the son of Elkanah LEWIS. Since only Pioneer Lewis Families states that a Elkanah LEWIS, Jr. was the son of Elkanah LEWIS, Sr., without giving birth dates for either, maybe there was only one Elkanah LEWIS instead of two. It would certainly make your information fit my information. Also, I have no information about a family for an Elkanah LEWIS, Jr. The only odd thing that remains is that you say that Elkanah LEWIS was in the household of Elkanah LEWIS in 1790 along with another son. Of course, the 1790 Census gives no names but only statistics. If Lemuel was the other son, then the problem goes away. What do you think? By the way, you say that you would like to know more of John Lewis of Westerly. He was my immigrant ancestor, born abt 1631 in England / Wales and coming to the New World about 1656. A biography would fill many pages. He was one of a small number of the original settlers of Westerly, RI. 1. Re: [LEWIS] NC, Surry: Elkanah LEWISes/WALLER/FRANKLIN
    2. Pam Stone
    3. Gene, Thanks for your kind reply. I think, though, there must be some misunderstanding of the generations here. The Elkanah that had Lemuel (born in 1800) was Elkanah Jr., who I would estimate may have been born about 1767-1773 (Elkanah Jr. was in his father's household in 1790, 1 of 2 sons aged 16 or older at that time. There was an additional female in Elkanah Sr.'s household in 1790, so it is possible that Elkanah Jr. may have been married by then.) The other Lewis girls I mentioned before, Sarah, and possibly Ruth, would have been older than Elkanah Jr. (My Sarah Lewis Franklin had her first child in 1782; her husband, John, was born before 1760. Sarah was about 70 years old in 1834, and died in 1835, so she was born about 1764.) Of Elkanah Jr.'s children, I know that Lemuel married Valinda Poe in 1827, and Nancy married Alvis/Alphius Poe, both in Surry. By 1850, Valinda and Nancy were both widows, living next door to Raleigh Poe (Valinda & Alvis' father, I believe.) On the other side of Raleigh was my Silas Harris (whose wife was Eada Franklin, the daughter of John & Sarah Lewis Franklin.) (Raleigh & Silas were both 75 at that time.) I am not familiar with Pioneer Lewis Families, and would like to know more of John Lewis of Westerly, Rhode Island (any information from anyone would be greatly appreciated.) I would also like very much to know of Elkanah Jr.'s other children, who they married, where they lived, and their children, if anyone out there knows. Thanks! Pam pamstone@cfl.rr.com ----- Original Message ----- From: <Gene13717@aol.com> To: <LEWIS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 05, 2006 10:56 AM Subject: Re: [LEWIS] NC, Surry: Elkanah LEWISes/WALLER/FRANKLIN Pam: I have read with great interest your email on Elkanah et al. You may not know that he is descended from John Lewis of Westerly, RI. I have two kinds of information for you. Pioneer Lewis Families lists Elkanah as having 2 sons and 5 daughters. These were Lemuel b. abt 1800, Nancy, Phoebe, Lucinda, Mary, Polly, and Elkanah, Jr. Also, some of Lemuel 's descendants lived in Surry Cty, NC for several generations. My best information is that Elkanah, Sr. was b. in Huntington, Suffolk, NY abt 1775. This has been a bit of a puzzle for me and remains so because it seems impossible that he could have purchased land in 1778. And yet if his son Lemuel was b. in 1800 then he very well may have been b. in 1775. His supposed dob (1775) does fit well with the dob for his father, however. Could it be that the land he patented in 1778 was actually patented in 1798? If so, then the facts would make more sense. If you want more information about Elkanah's children, just ask.
