Many thanks to Gwenn for posting the Rowan Co., Tax List. The following was sent to me by a fellow BOLIN researcher. It contains many of the surnames found in the Rowan/Surry/Stokes area of North Carolina. Beginning about 1816, there was fairly large migration out of this area, attributed by some to failing crops. Many from Surry Co. are later found in Indiana, especially in Greene and Monroe Counties. This Affidavit would be found in the Rev Pension file of JOHN STORM. j french Beginning of transcript AFFIDAVIT FOR JOHN STORM , a Revolutionary War soldier pensioner from Greene Co., IN. This page was signed in Nov 1831 by his neighbors. We, the Subscribers are neighbors of John Storm, he is an honest and correct old man, we believe him to be a man of truth and veracity, as much so as any man in our County, (of Green Indiana). He is Generally Respected and believed to have enlisted and served for and during the Revolutionary War for about three years or better - in the Cavalry troop of Colonel Wm. Washington and received his discharge after the termination of the War. We believe his claims on government are just, and hope they will be allowed. Signed, Nov 1831 ... Hugh M. So that is not the right Sallie...that married a Steelman. Barb
Looking for death of Mathias Steelman bca1785, s/o John Steelman and Jane Casion; who married 1816 Rowan Co., Sally Esteb/Estep, d/o Abraham Estep and Hannah Humphreys. When father went to Tn., story goes he left Mathias with his brother James Steelman, and son John with Abraham Creson, in Surry co. NC Sallie seems to be on the 1840, 1850 census in Surry Co., and possibly 1860 Yadkin Co., as HOH. Known daughters were Mary (m/Reavis), Elizabeth b 1826 Rebecca b1829, and Sarah/Sally b 1834. Any info on this family would be appreciated. Thank you Barbara Lucas

Gween, I am looking for Cooks. Robert and son Thomas had land grants in 1784 in the Townfork Settlement. I think James Cook lived on what is now the Surry Sotkes border near Westfield. I think they came from Caroline Co, Va. I have never heard of the Hallows before, very interesting. I was b in Chestnut Ridge approx center of Mt. Airy, Westfield and Pilot Mountain.
