    1. [NCSURRY] Thomas ALLEN, Surry County, early 1800s
    2. jud croft
    3. To Bob and others who have forwarded information about Thomas Allen, Surry County - thank you so much for your help. I guess my hunt for my Allen ancestors in Surry County proves that genealogy is a real treasure hunt. So far, mostly hunting and little treasure. There is a fascinating gap in my Allen line that I am having no success closing. There are hundreds of pages of Allen information on the Internet relating to Richard Alleyn, born in England abt 1572. Descended from him is: Robert Allen Jr (born 1704) married Elizabeth Young (abt 1725) in Virginia and one of their sons was given the first name 'Young'. From then on, to this day, there are Allens with Young as a first and second name. My great-grandfather was Richard Young Allen and was a son of Thomas Allen, Surry County. I have been able to track the family from Surry County in 1850 census, to Missouri then to Texas. The gap I cannot close is between the line of 'Young' Allens descended from Robert Allen Jr./Elizabeth Young and Thomas Allen who named his son Richard Young Allen. I may be going down the wrong path but I think the name Young is a pretty good clue. I continue to search and all assistance is very much appreciated. 2. G. Lee Hearl
    3. I have noticed many people in my research whose names have "Y.C" attached. I have seen this written out as Young Conn. My great grandfathers brother was William Y.C. Herrell and at a sale of my gggrandfather, Henry Roberts, William Y. C. Musick bought some of the tools.. Does anyone know more about the use of "Y. C." as a middle name?? Thanks, G. 3. Hi Judson, I don't have those ALLEN names, but I do have some others that are probably related to them. My ancestors are PATTERSON and WHITAKER from Surry County, but I try and take some surveys of cemeteries in Surry when I can make it up there. Anyway, there is a J. W. ALLEN cemetery located on Ayers Road which is just southwest of Pilot Mountain, meaning the mountain itself. It's a well-maintained cemetery and the GPS coordinates are: 36.18.31.2 N, 080.28.58.5 W, elevation is about 975 ft. I surveyed the cemetery last May, 2006. Location is . . . . From the intersection of US Hwy 52 & NC Hwy 268 in Pilot Mountain travel south on US Hwy 52 for 5.00 miles to the Pinnacle exit on the right. At end of ramp, turn right onto Perch Rd and go 0.95 mile and turn right on Mt. Zion Church Rd. Then go 2.1 miles until Mt. Zion Church Rd dead ends. Then left on Pinnacle Hotel Rd for .5 miles to Ayers Rd; then left on Ayers Rd for .4 miles, and cemetery is on left. Earliest marker is John ALLEN, b. 1-20-1807, d. 11-10-1902. His wife is Malinda BROWN, b. 7-19-1808, d. 3-2-1891. Presume the "J. W. ALLEN" name is for this John ALLEN. Will try and post the other names later when I can get them transcribed. I continue (with no success) to search for information about my family of Allens in NC in early 1800s. It seems that Allen must be the most common surname in the state. I seek any information about a Thomas Allen, married Majincy (?). What little information I have is listed below. I believe this Thomas Allen lived in Surry County but I have no idea if he was born there. If you can link anything you have found to this Allen family I would love to receive it. 3. Gwenn, Thank you!! Thank you!! Thank you!! Everything is falling into place. I'm doing the happy dance -- this information - the mention of BELEWS CREEK - matches information in the Rev War Pension file of CONWAY STONE born 16 July 1761 in Granville Co., NC., who entered the service while living in Surry Co., NC. EZEKIEL STONE, a rev war Pensioner, gave testimony in 1845 to support a claim by Conway's daughter, NANCY BEAZLEY. He stated that he was present at the wedding celebration of CONWAY STONE & ELIZABETH GALAGLEE in 1781, in Surry Co., NC. EZEKIEL STONE was born 24 Nov 1756, Fauquier Co., VA [Fauquier Co. was part of Prince William until 1759.] The JOHN STONE shown early in Rowan Co., and in 1790 on Surry Co, NC, tax list & Census is ELDER JOHN STONE. He was designated 'Sen' on the 1790 tax list. He dies 1795-1800. I believe he is the father of EZEKIEL, CONWAY, WILLIAM, JOHN Jr., ENOCH, SOLOMON, and HANNAH BARROW (b. 1764). It is the younger JOHN STONE (Jr) shown in the 1790 STOKES Co. Census who is the brother to WILLIAM STONE!! By 1810 Census he is being included in Surry Co., living in the Richmond Dist. He is also shown this year in the Stokes Co., NC census, also designated Richmond Dist. Evidently he lived at the border between STOKES and SURRY which wasn't clearly defined until later. This JOHN STONE, JR.'s children and ENOCH STONE's children are in the same age range. WILLIAM STONES children are 10 to 20 years older. About SOLOMON STONE who moved to Greene Co., IN. Detailed census analysis shows a male his age in the ELDER JOHN STONE household in 1790, as an extra male in the ENOCH STONE household in 1800 and as an extra male in the WILLIAM STONE household in 1810. He married Elizabeth Fletcher in 1812. He is taxed on 100 acreas of land on Heather Creek in 1815 and 1816, reportedly located next to William Stone. WILLIAM STONE, who left a will naming his children, also chose many of the same given names for his children -- Ezekiel, Conway, Hannah -- except he did not name a son either ENOCH or SOLOMON. SOLOMON STONE, rev war Pensioner who entered service while living in Surry Co. NC., b. 3 Dec 1752 in Prince Edward Co., VA, is also related -- just haven't figured out how. Rev war pensioners, Conway, Ezekiel & Solomon STONE, left this area shortly after their service as detailed in their pension files. ------------------------------------------------------- OTHER STONE's who are possibly related: There is a large clan of STONE's living nearby in FRANKLIN COUNTY, NC, who MAY be cousins, uncles, etc. Two brothers of this group are also Rev War Pensioners. They remained in Franklin Co., NC, after the war. JOHN STONE, Franklin Co. NC, born Halifax Co. NC, 25 Feb 1760 and married 3 Feb 1780, Granville Co., NC JONATHAN STONE, identified as John's brother, was born Halifax Co. NC, July 4, 1755 WILLIAM STONE, b. 20 Sept 1763, Halifax County on the Roanoke River. He moved to Franklin Co. He says it was first Bertie County then redrawn into Warren & Franklin counties, NC. Relationship to John and Jonathan undetermined. j french Also interesting: http://www.webroots.org/library/usahist/tcotos03.html Conquest of the Old Southwest - Chapters VIII-XI 1765 -- Uriah STONE -- CHAPTER VIII. 2. The reason for the failing crops was that this country was coming out what was called "the little ice age" where summers had cold weather and frost causing crops to fail. A lot of people left for the south around that time frame. Wanda

    2. I'm interested in Holemans in Surry/Rowan county. My Isaac Holeman was born in Feb. 15, 1752 in Rowan county and enlisted in the Rev. War in 1775 in Surry county. He moved to SC after the war and then on to GA and then to Lincoln county TX where he died in Aug. 25, 1834. Isaac's father was Thomas Holeman who died in 1798. Susan Holman Dallas
