Dear Pam, I am totally unsure that William Harris (wife Temperance Overton) of colonial Pamunkey River area is descended from a Robert Harris. I do think your genealogist friend, Mrs. Davis, whose name is familiar to me, was right in being dubious about Robert being the father of William. I have just now referred to my notes, made some years ago, about Robert Harris, the purported immigrant to Virginia, and I see that I have extensive quotes from Mrs. Davis. When I do research on a person, particularly if he/she has lived in colonial Virginia or North Carolina, I try very hard to find land records. It is estimated by some knowledgeable genealogists/lecturers/authors that in the early days of this country, fully 90 per cent of the Anglo [and I might add German] population owned land. I find land records for a Robert Harris are extremely vague. Since William Harris of Pamunkey River area acquired a good many acres, according to the Virginia land patents, I am dubious that he is linked to the land-poor [it seems] Robert Harris, the purported immigrant. Information about an early Robert Harris in Virginia seems extremely vague. Then, to confuse matters, Malcolm Hart Harris, MD, an ardent genealogist, has written about William Harris, and he discovered there were three of them. It has been some years since I reviewed Dr. Harris's articles in The Virginia Genealogist, but I do NOT recall that he linked William Harris (wife Temperance Overton), who can be pretty well documented, with an immigrant ancestor, Robert Harris, In conclusion, I think we are right to question the linkage of these two colonial Virginians. Thank you for stirring me to review my notes. I am going to send them via a different e-mail. All I ask--if others use this material in their genealogies/family histories, please cite the sources. You do not need to cite my conclusions, but do give credit to those who have published their works. Genealogies without citations are rather worthless. Your progeny will ask, Where did you get that information? E.W.Wallace ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
E. W. and everyone, My good friend (and a very respected Virginia history researcher, who wrote Tidewater Virginia Families & was the official historian/genealogist of the 400th Anniversary of Virginia,) Virginia Lee Hutchison Davis (who unfortunately and sadly passed away August 18th of this year), and who documented our mutual Harris line in her books, Tidewater Virginia Families, said to me personally that she felt that we had not identified "our" particular end of "this" Harris line. She stated to me on several occasions that she felt "our" end of this Harris line did not come from the only documented line of Robert Harris (being his eldest son, William Harris, "your" William.) She told me she strongly felt that "our" end of this Harris line came from a younger son of Robert Harris 1659, and I think I have to agree with her conclusions. I find a Robert Harris patenting land in York Co., VA in 1687 adjacent to the land of William Brocas. I also find Capt. William Brocas listed as the owner of land in Lancaster Co., VA in 1665 in Christ Church Parish, VA in the Vestry Book of Christ Church Parish, VA. He had a later son who was also listed as a landowner in Virginia. I think that we all need to do more serious research in order to discover the younger sons of "your" Robert Harris. Here are some of my notes. If you are handy with spreadsheets [or even 3 x 5 index cards] perhaps you can sort out these various William Harrise. One male is pretty definitely the son of Major Robert Harris of Louisa Co., VA, sometimes of Albemarle Co., as a deed after his death refers to his brother Christopher Harris and to his, William's wife/widow, Elizabeth. I always hold in the back of my mind that colonial wives sometimes did not last long, and any man may have had several wives. (In fact my own paternal grandmother--I am no youngster--died after the birth of her 3rd child--septicemia says her death certificate.) By the way, I am a direct descendant of Christopher Harris, who migrated to Madison Co., KY from Albemarle Co. after the Revolution. According to his will, he was the father of at least 19 children--by two wives. If you get these William Harrises, who seem to have been contemporaries, straightened out, please share with Harris-Hunters. If one checks the land records--patents as well as deeds--of colonial Virginia, the number of Harris males will astound you!!! Here are my notes. If you use this material in your own work, please cite the sources, a I have tried to do. Genealogy without sources is rather worthless. (The analytical remarks are my own. Help yourself, but give due credit to the wonderful authors of abstracted records.) E.W.Wallace WILLIAM HARRIS SON OF ROBERT HARRIS, MAJOR. 3931 Little is known of William Harris, reportedly born Nov 1752. He reportedly died before 1777, according to the Albemarle Co. deed cited below. William was seemingly under age or ill when his father Major Robert Harris of Louisa Co., VA wrote his will in June 1765. According to Malcolm Hart Harris, author of several articles on the Harris family of Hanover Co., his first wife was a Miss Michie and that a second was was [unknown] Thompson. Another account states his wife was Hannah Jameson. The Albemarle Co. deed cited below involving his brother Chirstopher indicates his widow was Elizabeth. At any rate, he is reported to have died in 1776. More research is needed. Major Robert Harris's (abstracted) will (W.B. 3-165) in Louisa Co. reads as follows: 18 June 1765. I August 1765. Son Christopher to have 40 acres of land in Albemarle County, known as "Bears Cornfield." After decease of wife, son William to have all land I now hold in Albemarle County. Sons, Robert, Tyre and William Harris to have slaves. Wife Mowrning (Mourning) to have use of all lands during her life. Son William [who probably was underage] to be under direction of son-in-law John Rodes. Exrs: sons-in-law John Rodes and William Shelton. Wit: Daniel Maupin, John Mullins, Jr, William Maupin and Connerly Mullins. (Rosalie Edith Davis, LOUISA COUNTY, VIRGINIA DEED BOOKS A AND B, 1742-1759 [Bellevue, WA, 1976] Mrs. Davis's abstracted wills shows many Harris males involved in land transactions in that county. Perhaps these several Harris males were related because their names appear often in conjunction with others who are related to female lines, i.e., Rice, Dabney, Glen.) We believe, but cannot prove, that this patent may apply to the son of Maj. Robert Harris of Louisa Co. We know from other land records that the Harrises owned land near Moorman's River in Albemarle Co. Patent Bk 42-633: William Harris, 211 acs. Albemarle Co. on the S side of Pasture fence Mountain on some of the Eastern brs. of Moremans Riv., adj his own line; 5 Jul 1774, p. 633, 1 pd. 5 Shillings. (Dennis Ray Hudgins, CAVALIERS & PIONEERS, V. 7 [Richmond: Virginia Genealogical Society], p. 346) Can the following Amherst Co. deed refer to this particular William Harris? Amherst Co. DB C-190 1 Jul 1771. William Harris, Albemarle, to John Diggs, AC [Amherst Co.] for 50 pds., 150 acres on N side of Rockfish. Pat of tract bought by Wm. Harris from Jacob Writh. Lines: Wm. Harris, N side of the main road, crossing Buck Creek. Wit: Wm. Harris, Jr., Jno Montgomery, Josiah Jopling. (Rev. Bailey Fulton Davis, THE DEEDS OF AMHERST COUNTY, VIRGINIA, 1761-1807 AND ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VIRGINIA, 1748-1763 [Easley, SC: Southern Historical Press, 1979] p. 127) Amherst Co. DB A-227 gives information that William Harris on 2 Jul 1764 bought part of the original 900 acres belonging to Jacob Wright and wife Elizabeth. (ibid, p. 82) In December 2002, one correspondent states that William Harris with wife Henrietta [unknown] is the son of Robert Harris, but we cannot verify this union from the following abstracted deed, which is signed acknowledged by a William Harris with a wife named Elizabeth. Question: Did Elizabeth have two names, or are these distinctly different wives? Furthermore, we cannot identify Samuel Harris, Overton Harris and James Harris. A James Harris is said to have married Mary, the daughter of Robert Harris and is verified to have been son-in-law of Major Robert Harris. Are Samuel and Overton Harris brothers of James Harris, the groom of Mary, the daughter of Maj. Robert Harris? Because of the late date of this deed--1786--this person seems NOT to be the same as Robert Harris's son William who died ca. 1776-1777, as indicated in an Albemarle Co. deed cited below. Why is one of the grantors named Hennaretta, and yet the deed is signed by a woman named Elizabeth Harris? Is this an error of the abstractor, Mrs. Davis, or of the county clerk? This writer has observed over the years that frequently county clerks will give a female one name in one place and another name in another place in a document. Louisa Co. Is he the William Harris who appears in this Albemarle Co. deed? The association with a male Mechie suggests that he is the same person. Albemarle Co. The name of the widow of William Harris--Elizabeth--appears in a 1777 deed in Albemarle Co Deed Bk 1776-1782, p. 56-58. Abstracted, the deed reads: 8 May 1777 between Christopher Harris and Agnes, his wife, and Elizabeth Harris, the widow of William Harris deced. all of Albemarle Co. to Thomas Garth - two parcels of land 150 acres on N. side of Mechum's River and 336 acres on both sides of Mecham's River ... Or, conceivably the 1778 deed was recorded after William's death. ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

Glenda >From Surry Co NC marriages: 3/28/1870 Henry LAWSON s/o Allen Lawson + Martha Fry d/o Jolly FRY Suggestion: There is a FREE transcription [you cannot access the image without paying Ancestry.com] of the 1880 census for the whole USA available on _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) (When you type in the URL given above, remove the punctuation which rootsweb adds at the beginning and end of the URL) When you get the opening screen on Familysearch, skip the *fill-in-the-blank* stuff--you will be led astray. Look in the lower right corner for the word census, which may not be immediately visible. Check [several times if necessary] that you want the US census for 1880. Now, without giving the search engine too much information, type in the surname you want and the state--North Carolina [from the drop-down menu of states]. You will find over 400 listings for Lawsons. Get more specific if you wish, but sometimes the persons who made the indexes could not read the old handwriting. Furthermore, the census-taker made some atrocious mistakes in the original. The 1880 US census is of interest to genealogists because the census-taker was to ask each enumerated person where each of his parents was born. Be sure to read the far right side of the census. Again, you will not get the image of the actual census page. When you find a person of interest, click on his or her name, then look at the upper right of the screen for a word *Household*. Click on that. You are going to find more Lawsons than you bargained for!!! What if they are all related? Wow! I think I would look for the Fry family first. I believe they were of German background, possibly Moravian, but that is only a hunch on my part. The more you study the neighbors and the in-laws, the more you will understand your families--flaws, crimes, etc. But, the hunt is fun!! Good luck! Thanks to everyone who took the time to explain the marriage bonds to me. I have a better understanding now. Susan Sutter County, CA
I am back to my Surry County research after a year or so long break. I am inspired by a recent visit with my children's grandfather. He lived in Surry county almost continuously from his birth in 1925 to 1955. He is now 82 years old and very reminicent and sentimental about his days in Surry County. I have a question. I have been using the BMD records at Ancestry. Can someone explain the use of the marriage bond to me. I noticed some bonds were taken as early as 4-5 years before the marriage took place. I also wanted to let you know, the rootsweb quaker e-mail list is currently have a discussion that might be of interest: "Why Quakers left NC." Susan Petersen Sutter County, CA

Is there anyone on the list who knows the surname of Elizabeth who married Matthew Creed Jr? Their son Bennett Creed married Mary Jones in Grayson Co VA on 2 Aug 1831. They were the parents of Shadrack "Shade" Creed, my great-grandfather. Bennett died in Russell Co VA. Shade died in Tazewell Co VA. I would love to hear from anyone who can shed any light on the parents of Elizabeth, wife of Matthew Creed Jr. Nyla CREED DePauk ************************************** Get a sneak peak of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
Wow! E.W., I am really impressed by your being willing to share your hard-won research! (And its depth---you are really a great researcher on your end of these Harris lines!) Thank you---you just may be able to significantly help determine how, exactly, my illiterate William Harris of Culpeper, VA & NC relates to your much-better-educated Harris line. Thank you so much for sharing it with me and all the other Harris researchers. I will need some time to digest all of the documents you have provided, to comprehend all of them, and to appropriately respond to this mail. Thank you for your kindness and generosity to all of us Harris researchers. I certainly will be back in touch with you. And again, I thank you. Please, everyone who has notations on this man, correct your notes for him.] This Robert Harris and his family had moved, along with his parents, from Louisa Co. to Albemarle Co., VA, near the end of his parents' lives. Robert Harris Sr., and his wife, Mourning Glenn, died there, and their wills are recorded there. I do have documentation for this family in Louisa Co., and other earlier families, but I only will post a couple of vital ones in Albemarle, and a portion of what is relevant in North Carolina. And, by the way, Benjamin Brown Sr. had a large number of children before he started "going for the B's"; only his younger children's names all started with the letter "B". Lucy Brown Harris died sometime before1806, and Robert died there in 1809. An additional document that I am including here is the will of Cornelius Dabney [second father-in-law of this Robert Harris' brother, Christopher Harris, whose second wife was apparently Cornelius' daughter. {Cornelius Dabney's daughter, the second wife of Christopher Harris, was the mother of a number of his children that are named in his 1794 Madison Co., KY will...}] Robert Harris [Sr.] of Surry Co., NC, wrote his will in 1806 and died in 1809 in Surry Co., NC. Pam _pamstone@cfl.rr.com_ (mailto:pamstone@cfl.rr.com) My response: I cannot remember--but will look through old sent mail--whether I messed up the death date of Robert Harris of Surry Co., NC. Furthermore, I do not collect all of the Benjamin Brown's children, so I am willing to make corrections as needed. However, if I am reading the information about Christopher Harris of Madison Co., KY, previously of Albemarle Co., VA correctly, then I need to correct information about his second wife--Agnes McCord, who survived him. I will send separately info that I *picked up* about Robert Harris, the son of Major Robert Harris of Louisa Co., VA, and I would appreciate any corrections you wish to make. Mary Dabney is reported to be the first wife of Christopher Harris, and this is partialy confirmed by the fact that Christopher in his will refers to his first children and a will of Cornelius Dabney [which Cornelius Dabney?] Also the first child named is Dabney Harris. Here are some of my notes about Agnes McCord, who survived Christopher Harris, and her name appears several times in the deed index of Madison Co., KY. Also, her name appears in some of the notes made by ... Lyman C. Copeland in Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia.[on the internet]. AGNES McCORD. (d. ca 1815, Madison Co., KY) Agnes was the second wife of Christopher Harris, of Albemarle Co., VA, later of Madison Co., KY. They are believed to have been married in 1760, as their oldest son, Benjamin, is said to have been born 28 Nov 1760. This information may need some "adjustment." Thus, Agnes was probably at least age 14-18 at time of marriage. However, preliminary research of Albemarle Co. deed indexes indicates that as late as 1768, Agnes may have been a single woman, but that by 1772, she was married to Harris. As seen from the deed entry in Albemarle Co., in late 1760, Agnes McCord seems to have been a single woman, not yet married to Christopher Harris. [Albemarle Co.] DB 2, Page 294: 14 Aug 1760 Wm. There shouldn't be any great mystery as to who your William Harris was who died in Wilkes Co.NC in 1848 at the age of 96. That makes him the exact age to be the son of Major Robert Harris & wife Mourning Glen - since they had a son named William born March 15, 1752 who was a twin by the way with his sister Elizabeth born the same day. The records I've seen don't have any information of what became of him after his birth in Albemarle Co. but by these dates this seems very very likely to be him. Susan Avery Winston-Salem, NC NC
